It's all about what speaks to you as an instrument and what doesn't
+1 on that. The main thing with any instrument is that its just an extension of your own voice , and a means of expressing whats in your own head, a lot of bassists seem to forget that.
 2.
It's been over 20 years since I last played a Wal and at the time my style of bass playing didn't really benefit from what the Wal had to offer. Since then what I want from a bass has changed plus one of the few bass players that I admire - Mick Karn - is a well-known Wal user. However it's worth bearing in mind that most of his signature bass playing in Japan was done before he got his Wal on a Travis Bean TB2000 and TBH there's not a massive difference in the recorded tone...
I thought all basses sounded the same with a chorus and octave pedal on them ? Seriously , the Wals I have played (4) all seemed to suit mid range A to G playing as it seems the electronics are tuned to this range. The bottom end seemed lacking compared to other basses of a similar price but that could have been strings or amplification. I went out in 1980 to buy a brand new Wal and came home with my Hofner S7B instead ! Spoombung's fretless Wal is superb to play and has one of the best fretless tones I have come across but it isn't to everyones liking.
 3.
+1,000,000 Simple yet not simple. With some very deep stuff in some of those lyrics.
Very much so +1 Commando , my personal favorite, very apt at the moment.
They do their best, they do what they can They get them ready for Vietnam From old Hanoi to East Berlin Commando - involved again They do their best, they do what they can They get them ready for Vietnam First rule is: No love of Germany Second rule is: Be nice to your mommy Third rule is: Don't talk to commies Fourth rule is: Eat kosher salamis
I saw them in 77 / 78 Free Trade Hall Manchester, 1 hour of solid sound with just the 1,2,3,4 between songs, classic.
 4.
Well if you make a living out of selling cheap basses, that's not very surprising. You wouldn't win, would you?
Cheap ? Inexpensive dear sir there is a big difference.... And I don't "make a living" from it, I'm teaching myself how to make basses. Anyone can sell things , making things is rather more difficult. I am a bass philanthropist spreading the goodness.
 5.
OK so why post!!
You could ask that question to 50% of the postings in a lot of the threads. Thats how I think and you won't change that. Its not a personal attack on anyone and everyone has the right to reply. Just reminds me of conversations in the pub regarding how much do you earn, how big is your house and how much was your car ? It just appears ostentatious to me. The gear porn thread is fine as there is never any mention of how much the basses cost. Just my thoughts.
 6.
I don't know why you would think that, I find it quite interesting. As some people have said, their basses are relatively cheap, mine included, so nobody is saying really expensive basses are better or that it makes them better than anyone else. Cheers ped
I have a genuine problem with discussing "price" as opposed to "worth" In the words of Benjamin Franklin
Many a man thinks he is buying pleasure, when he is really selling himself to it.
Plus I'm just filling in for my mate BBC .......
 7. You can't beat inverse snobbery..... Just get some polish on the P/J hybrid and some Hi-Beams it will be fine....
 8. I find this thread Crass beyond belief.... Whats next who has the biggest c**k ? Or should that be who is the biggest c**k ?
 9.
I'd like to know where the rule no auctions came from. If there has been some precedent in how a previous thread has been managed that I was otherwise unaware of, then I'd like to know about it.
There nothing in the Forum notes , so no problem . Just thought it needed clarifying , looks like its all got blown out of proportion. Best of luck with the sale,
 10.
If you aren't sure, why are you even contributing to this thread?
Clarification ?
 11.
Now two offers at £1500.
To me this is quite simple....its an auction.
A method for selling an asset to the highest bidder.
A sale is where you state a price and if it is offered you sell to that person. I personally haven't got a problem with this but if it is against forum rules you should state a a price and sell the bass at that price. If you had put out a "feeler" then you could of taken offers on the bass with no one knowing what was being offered , but to state a price "offered" or "bid" however you want to put it is whats put you in this position and I agree with BBC and others on this point. I'm sorry you are unemployed but join the queue , there are plenty on this forum in the same boat me included so you have my sympathies in that respect. BBC is abrasive and can be rash in his postings but he is also a great source of amusement and acid wit. As for the references to whoever , I've been called worse and so have many others , take it on the chin and rise above it. I feel you have abused your authority because actually BBC was correct in stating this was an auction and you didn't like it. I suggest he is reinstated to explain himself otherwise this will go on and on and the issue has become more important than the bass for sale.
 12. How about this ? Black Market is a good place to start, personally I prefer Alphonso Johnson especially "Herandnu" 1' 18" onwards is sublime
 13.
The beautiful city of the North...Lancaster!
Lovely City Lancaster , worked there for years Have a bump on a lovely bass, I always lusted after a Grabber in my youf !
 14. Finding a good "Jazz" is a bit of an Holy Grail quest. That "classic" Jazz tone can be hard to come by unless you want to part with serious money. I have found it to be a problem that people expect the "Jazz" tone from a Squier or other reasonable make that resembles a Jazz but will sound nothing like one. Even a lot of top end replicas don't have the classic tone because they have pickups on that color the tone. As an example I recently built a Jazz replica but put some beefy chrome (EB0) humbuckers on it and it had a proper Jazz tone ? I have tried building faithful replicas that failed abysmally , I had a Squier Jazz with a J-Retro fitted that sounded nothing like a Jazz ? Best I have played was a US 74 model that was just right. Nearest I have come to the tone recently was with Kennyrodg's Spunky bass (£285.00) imported which I think is an outstanding bass. Best bet is to play a few (bass bash ?) before you either write them off or buy one that turns out to be disappointing.
 15.
You're not alone. I can't believe a lot of you crazies on here put batteries in a musical instrument! What the f*** is all that about? What happens when they run out? Do you have to carry spares or something? What do the batteries do anyway? You've got knobs to twiddle on the amp, which is connected to a f***-off big battery (the national grid). f***'s me off when I pick up a nice looking bass only to noitice a flip top battery compartment on the back like some kind of toy. You people who use these so-called "active" basses should be on some kind of register. Or burnt at the stake. Saw a bloke with batteries in his fender the other day. Batteries - in a fender! I couldn't believe it. He'll be first to get a good shoeing come the revolution.
I don't consider battery maintenance to be a problem. I always check mine after I have polished my bass.
 16. He doesn't hold the "key" he just has his own personal philosophy on things. It won't suit everyone but obviously suits him.
 17. Not too fussed providing the marks go away after a few days.
 18.
This is a quote from Michael Tobias ".... consider that the electric bass is first and foremost an acoustic instrument. If you amplify a 2x4, it will sound like an amplified 2x4. That in itself may not be bad, but it may not be what you need to get the job done. What you need is an instrument that sounds good acoustically; if a bass sounds good without amplification, then it usually sounds good with amplification." His full article is on http://www.mtdbass.com/articles/quest_for_tone.pdf
I think it is beyond doubt that wood type has a bearing on the tone but as to quantifying the difference between a 2 x 4 and a nice piece of say American Walnut its not that easy. As I stated earlier BigRedX's Born to Rock "bedstead" sounds very woody ! and was a complete surprise to me.
 19.
...funny that Paul is also very interested in this bass. Did you go to the Notts bash? From the pics and video it looked like a bunch of blokes slapping and clanking away on Fenders!
No video of the Notts bash ? they were clanking Fenders and videoing it at the North East bash though ! My mission in life is to become a Spoombung bass choice stalker..... Not really...... just getting info on whats about and how others do things. The more info I acquire the more confused I become and the farther back I go in my search for bass build nirvana... Looks like "get an idea and stick to it come what may" is very true. I will henceforth stick to my guns and disappear to my shed to emerge with my own idea of bass Nirvana and no longer take advice from anyone....
 20.
And the bass line to With or Without You is instantly recognisable, even for non bass players. Next time you have friends or family round, start playing it and see how many people recognise it.
Hows it go ? can you hum it ?
 21.
I was going to bring that as Kev (Spoombung) wanted to try it, but when I realised that we'd got our bashes mixed up I didn't bother as I thought it would probably be of little interest to anyone else. I was obviously wrong. It's currently strung with some heavy-ish gauge D'addario strings 24, 32, 42, 52 IIRC. Tuning varies depending on what I doing with it. As most of the time I'm doing faux 8-string by doubling up a standard bass part it changes between EADG, DGDG and EAEA.
Have you tried it with an Octave pedal ? may be an interesting outcome.
 22. Just received a very well packed , and in very good condition V-Amp Pro from James. Excellent transaction cheers.
 23.
I think they still are, BassDirect Mark's still playing for them.
Maybe I should have quantified "Kellogg's Pop Tarts" got into enough trouble lately.... Looks like other forums like this line of discussion...
what's the difference between god and bono? god doesn't think he's bono. he's a cock (and I've met him). bono that is, not god.
24. I remember "Pop Tarts" being quite popular a few years ago
