Incidentally I need a couple of the scews that go in the back of the machine heads, the big ones that hold them together, or failing that a couple of large based elepant ears, anyone got any I just sold all my flippin spares ..d'oh!
I have some that may fit PM me your address and I'll pop them in the post.
  2.
Odd diagram, they have the whoel ctrl plate the wrong way round, with the jack socket where the neck vol pot should be and the neck vol pot where the jack socket should be. I'd go for 0.22uF also with 250k pots and single coil jazz pups
Well spotted Al I have found little difference in 500 / 250k pots for volume control
  3. Hi good to meet you on Sunday
and can you advise me on good/bad choices for -
Neck Mighty Mite , best value for money and as good as Fender Neck plate Ebay £4.99 Machine heads Schaller Lightweights or Fender Geddy Lees (very positive look beefy) Scratchplate Bridge Schaller 3-D for the range of adjustment and German Engineering P PUP Wizard or Artec Giovanni J PUP As above Bridge cover What !!!!! Pots Knobs Nut Graphtec hope this helps Paul
  4.
I might be interested also ;D
I already have a firm offer on the bass for when its finished but if it falls through I will put it up for sale immediately. Paul
  5. Hi Alan would it be possible to have the venue for a little longer than in Harrogate ? The day seemed to pass very quickly and I for one would prefer say 10am to 6pm or 11am - 7pm This would mean the early birds could get away sooner if they traveling home a way and could still have 4 - 5 hours there. Others who have been gigging Saturday could turn up later. What are your views on this ? Paul
  6. "Bestial Cluster" has got some good stuff on it. Not too impressed with JBK (Jansen , Barbieri and Karn) but then where could he go after the genius that was Japan...
  7. These 3 basses are for sale.
  8. Replying to Argh
Knee bass It caught my eye first,I like designs that defy normality (No offence to those of a traditional viewpoint, but all P's and J's are just that...P's and J's) Weight was wonderful, didnt really understand the controls really (yes my fault, and small amp, room full of noise, but I like somethings a bit obvious....)..the action felt as if the neck had a serious forward bow,the neck was adequate, nothing special,I likes the finish upon the instrument, the nut felt high to and to be frank the sound I was presented with, didnt capture me,the P/u's felt weak, good for a slap tone, but no beef...given more time, and a better amp in front of me,that would have changed..it was solid. Saying that IT WAS DIFFERENT,and I like that.....There was nothing that could not be improved upon...but the shape was the draw to the eye.
The controls were 2 x vol 1 x tone and a coil tap for each pup. Biggest problem was my Little Ashdown competing against the likes of Mark Bass !!!! Nut is a little high (can be modded) and there is a slight relief in the neck but the action is only just over 2mm at the 12th You probably had the coil tap switches in single coil and would have got a thin sound. Jim Furlong played some slap on it when the room was quiet and he liked it so that made me happy...
J style Bass The neck was of good 60s feel, and the body finish, though I played it in poor light, seemed of a very good quality,I enjoyed the minimalist controls (yeah..I like Black) and though different in setup,I enjoyed the sounds herein the instrument...The neck seemed adequate in joining with the body, and given I am not a J fan in tone I was happy....quite happy. BUT... Could I find anywhere I felt comfort to place my thumb to pluck fingerstyle,It was a Ricky 4001 with that bloody metal bit in the middle...without the metal bit all over again...the small scratchplate was nice, but I didnt feel comfort....it was close but no ciger for me..but given the price ITS A STEAL....
It may look like a Jazz but has a meaty humbucker and a single coil on it so thats probably why you liked the tone. Point taken with the plate and I may mod it so it is just in the pickup area.
The P.....I didnt want to play any Fenders that day,Ive a Fender (a real one) why tread the same path?? Did not like the controls, did not like the sound of the P/U....did not like the clunky way the body played with the slabish look....6 bolt neck connection?....I could not see in the dark. body, though wood (I LIKE WOOD) was a little plain jane in the grain. BUT f*** me it felt nice to play, the neck was ultra fat..50's ish,and Im a sucker for gold on hardware,IT FOUGHT BACK and wanted a war,and the finish was adorable, and I liked the gold anodized classic scratchplate...its a P,a P copy, with an on/off switch for the active system (neat...very neat)...a better p/u (Dimarzio is what I like) and it would be a BIG hitter that I would have bought upon the spot...YES Im a P guy....I couldnt care where the parts came from,THAT NECK was worth the price of entry alone...
In good light the body top is Gold and again with all the noise in there you didn't get a proper chance to notice to tone variations of the active set up. Wish there had been more time and a better amp ( Will bring a V-Amp pro / power amp ) setup to the next bash
Ive played a few bedroom builds in my time, and bought a few,its a good way to get good equipment, that works, lasts, and is reliable,at a cheap price. The above are, pretty much, all of that. Well done Prose, you should be proud.
Cheers Argh pity there wasn't more time for me to demonstrate the basses better.
  9.
I tried all 3,would you like my opinions? I will be honest, cutting, but kind.
Hi good to see you today......do your worst after all its only an opinion.... But take into account the prices, Jazz £195.00 P-bass and Gazzumper £295.00....
  10. Thanks B2BM & Yorks5stringer for organizing such a good event and TK4108 for being photographer for the day. Great to put faces to names and see the myriad of equipment available. Really interesting to see differing attitudes and approaches to basses and playing. Loved playing Spoombungs Wal.... Looks like I'll be having a trip to the North East one
  11.
I quite like the precision. Did you build it?
Thanks and yes I built it although the neck was "bought in"....the build thread is [topic="40534"]here[/topic] should you wish to have a look. cheers...Paul
  12. These are the basses I will be taking to Harrogate later today and it will be interesting to get some feedback on them.
  13.
Do you mean augers for powered drilling? Ive heard they can be quite hairy as they draw themselves into the wood, under power you get vertually no control. Ive recently picked up a carpenters brace and Im looking forward into getting into hand powered drilling. I dont suppose, just on the off chance, youve got any jarra left laying about?
The power came from my arms (fitting cranks on sleeper ends for railway points) nothing to do with basses ! Unfortunately the jarra was pressure treated so it didn't rot and no use for bass bodies, good for patios though. In recent years another wood was used for points sleepers (not sure what it was) but when you drilled it it smelled of dog sh*t ! bloody horrible.....
  14.
How heavy is the body? Are you going to be selling this? Cheers Si
At present the body is 6lb 1 oz but will be lighter when the cavity is done and the neck pocket needs a bit off. so I would say Body 5lb 6oz finished Neck 2lb 3oz Other bits 2lb 7oz Total approx 10lb 2oz in old money and in answer to the other bit "yes"
  15. Nice work and very professional looking. Its good to see people on here with skills getting stuck in Paul
  16.
That's gonna be cool. Liking the look of that bridge too. What is it? Schaller?
Its a Schaller 3-D
Did you buy that Lakky neck as new?
No all the parts for this build are secondhand from a fellow basschatter. I bought the body from chopthebass (Ian) before he emigrated to Canada , he is a very good bass builder so I hope I do it justice.
  17.
You could also try one of these: available from http://www.fine-tools.com/bohr2.htm Just a thought...
I have a phobia for augers after spending years drilling holes through 8" jarra sleepers with them !
  18.
Ooooh, scary! Where did you get your big long drill bit from? Is that about 8mm?
It is indeed 8mm. I got a full set of bits, steel and wood, hole cutters etc ranging from 1mm to 1 inch from Aldi in a plastic case for about a tenner. Not much cop for drilling 1/4 plate but every size and type you would ever need for wood. I am thinking of making a small jig from 9mm internal tubing that is height adjustable and can be mounted on the bench so you can drill perfectly level consistently. Its a bit hairy doing it by hand.
He takes after his father.
True....apparently
  19.
Hey folks. I have a Roland DB 500 combo thats not getting much use atm so i'll see if there's any interest. The carpet covering has a small bold patch where it was cat clawed(like that when i got it),nothing major and the chrome tip of one of the control knobs was hoovered off never to be seen again. In perfect working order,150 watts,it'll piss small pub gigs, great for rehearsals, home etc.A well known combo renowned for it's awesome tone and volume. bumpf, Digital modeling bass amplifier with Feed Forward Processing technology for rich, powerful output COSM modeling of Solid State, Tube and Tube Drive amps and Compression effects Split-frequency D-Chorus effect with dynamics sensitivity Shape controls specifically tailored to bass guitar 2 programmable memories for instant recall via footswitch (set 1 to mute for muteness, nice) 150W total output power w/ 12" speaker and horn tweeter Built-in DI with XLR and 1/4" outputs Looking for £150 plus postage,it's heavy though.Pick up or i could meet up within reason.
Bugger !!!!!! I've just sent a cheque off for the Behringer V-Amp that was for sale on the forum ..... otherwise I would have had it Pete.....if I sell some basses on Sunday at Harrogate its still an option... Its a cracking amp so you should sell it for whats a very good price at £150.00 In the meanwhile have a bump......

    Fin.

I am amazed that this has not been snapped up. It has a better spec than a US built P and is the price of a Squier !!!!! Plus it has had the care and attention that only a hand-built bass can have.... bump......
  21. Hi Al have you never tried my method of going through from the Jack socket to the pickup cavities ? It saves having to rout the top of a lovely body. It takes some bottle though if you do it by hand !
  22.
Oh wow, that looks really nice! I look forward to playing it (not keen on strings high above the body, though). I demand a 12.5% discount if i buy it!
The high strings are a necessary evil due to using the 462 bridge. I have kept the pickups well away from the strings as well and it seems to help the tone and sustain. Looking forward to Sunday.... Just got to get the Precision finished and a 5 string on Saturday.....
  23.
Nice touch - the recessed and angled barrel jack socket. that's intelligent building. Looks like you shielded the cavities with gold leaf!
Probably cheaper than the amount of sticky copper tape I use... Its the automatic white balance with the fluorescent tubes.... I'll get me anorak.....
  24.
It's a very fine line between "genius" and lost the plot.
When I play people just think I have lost the plot ....
  25.
No, I don't think we have. This isn't meant to be a Jaco appreciation thread but a simple question that hasn't been answered before imo. Peter
ok.....
