I challenge anyone who hates country not to like "Willin'". It's one of my favourite tracks ever, and if you diss it, I will smash your goddam face in.
+1 on that "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" is an awesome album with some sublime bass playing and not a bad song on it but it ain't "Country" as I would define it ! Billy Ray Cyrus anyone....
  2. Meths, but take the strings off as it will melt a lot of surface finishes...
  3.
watching random bass clips on you tube last night and stumbled upon this paul young clip.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTWt_pKiMl4...feature=related noticed pino not playing his stingray, but dont recognise what bass he is playing also noticed they had one of the chuckle brothers on guitar WARNING...this vid contains some HARDCORE mullets!
That is in my favorites on Youtube and as for the hairstyles, it looks like a "Mullet Convention"...
  4.
There certainly are shops like that in the centre of town, couldn't recommend any though as they're the kind of places I avoid! Send 'em to Betty's Tea Rooms (right in the centre of town by the cenotaph).
A visit to Godfrey & Twatt (fine ceramic ware, prints, wood and glassware) always puts a smile on my face....
  5. Yes big influence on me although I have no desire to sound like him . I can only reiterate what others have said and he varied fom "Pure Genius" to "Fast Show Jazz Club"
  6.
is that a natural or a coloured varnish used to get that colour finish? it's just the colour i want for a little project of mine. cheers, karl
Hi Karl Just to elaborate a little on the finish. The Antique oil is colored but it is a pink / purple color and does not color the mahogany. The oil soaks in and the natural resins seal the grain and form a coating on the surface. I have flatted that back and then used a normal furniture polish hand applied and buffed up with a Car polisher (£20.00) from Halfords and save a lot of arm ache. After several applications the excess wax builds up on the surface so you know the wood is fully penetrated. Flat back carefully again with 1200 paper until you achieve the desired color. Be careful on the edges as its easy to go straight through to the wood surface although you can use this to get a nice lighter effect around the edge. I brought the shine back by hand-polishing using a Car polish "Mer" although any "buff off" polish will achieve the same effect. Just remember to use lint free cloth when applying the oil and wax. The only drawback with this method is that although the wood is sealed it is a "soft" finish and the wood is still prone to scratching and dents. Everything is available at B&Q and non of it is toxic or harmful.
looks great!
Cheers Kev.....lets hope it sounds ok

    Fin.

That is uber nice Can you not get Beedster interested in it ? Did you finish the body yourself ? and if you did what was used ? Paul
  9.
good luck!
I'll need it ! I am only half way through the Precision build
  10.
That's looking pretty cool, though i can't help thinking it would look nicer if the edges were a bit more contoured... Also i've just realised why that bridge is so big, looks rather cool
The top edge is nicely contoured for your forearm but the rest isn't as it sits better on your knee. It was designed to be played sat down !....
  11. This will be Friday and Saturdays project to try and get finished for the Bass Bash on Sunday
  12.
Well, it all went a bit quiet over the last week and a half and I was beginning to wonder whether Mike and Steve had got lost in the snow drifts of Essex... swept away among the bare ruined choirs. It turns out Mike's been busy glueing bits of wood together. First of all here is the ash: And then the maple bookmatched join: Tomorrow he's glueing the maple and ash together.
Thats a nice piece of ash I hope you are not going to spoil it with a maple top...? The grain is reminiscent of a Wal...
  13. I like the look of this as the Les Paul shape has never been that popular with bassists.
  14.
Looking good sir - like the meaty roller bridge, where do you go to buy schallers? Battery change - will you have to take the whole 'guard off to get at the battery or are you going to cut a separate access door in the rear for it?
Cheers Al The Schallers I bought as a job lot on ebay....always buying up parts from there and the Schaller 462's were boxed with the adjustment keys...should of bought more ! I am a big fan of Schaller gear , good German engineering. As regards the battery the plate will have to come off ! , the Artec unit I am using will last 2 -3000 hours so hardly a weekly occurrence and I am not a fan of a lump of black plastic in the middle of a nice piece of wood ! The plate will be able to be removed without the strings coming off so not a big deal and I may install a power LED on the plate. But I may change my mind on that ! I like my builds to develop as I go along..
  15.
I wouldn't even agree with that, it's not a fair analogy (although I do see your point). Fender would more accurately be described at the Ford company itself, rather than one of it's base models... a company that gave the world the most usable means of transport to the masses and a company that gave the world the most usable electric guitars at the time. That to me would seem fairer.
Good point , and better put than moi....
  16.
that looks cool already, and the yellow wash looks even better. just as a matter of interest, how much do your builds cost?
pm'd
  17.
is anybody bringing gear they are trying to sell?
4 or 5 basses hopefully if I can get them together in time.
  18.
Yes... but how many of those use a Fender as their main instrument? A quick glance reveals plenty of players who are just as famous for playing a different brand of bass. Proves nothing.
I didn't check each one individually but many of them still use Fenders either...as their main instruments, started on a Fender or occasionally use a Fender. You can't say that for any other Make of bass ? Fenders may be the Ford Mondeo of the bass world but then there is nothing wrong with Ford Mondeo's
  19. Ask this lot !!!! Precision Players Jazz Players
  20. Is all this not a bit like arguing the relative merits of a Ferrari, a TVR, a Lotus, a Jaguar, a Mondeo......? A Ferrari 560 looks nice , sounds nice , goes like stink, no doubt the dealer service is excellent and it makes the owner feel good but in everyday use its no better than my V6 Mondeo that cost considerably less but still puts a smile on my face. You cannot state "best" without taking everything into account. Custom builds are a personal thing and to state one luthier is better than another is pointless. It would be better if everyone replied with the reasons as to "why" , which was the original question ? Many bassists on here are happy with £250 basses in an inverted snob way which is the camp I am in and could not justify spending £1000 + on a custom build. For those of you that do it would be interesting to know what you paid for these builds and how you justify it ? whether that is because it plays like a dream , you need it as a professional bassist or just because it looks nice. It seems to me that all the independent UK bass makers produce excellent instruments and should we not be celebrating this rather than arguing the relative merits of one against another ?
  21.
Great Idea. Might get to look at some Wood?????
Is that a euphormism ?....
  22.
Indeed we were! I'd really recommend anyone looking to use an ACG preamp on their bass to consider Q-Tuner pickups. The Q-Tuners have a much higher resonant peak than any other passive pickups so you can then use the ACG filters to simulate the sound of any pickup you want without having to fight the sound inherent to most pickups. Another approach would be to use a low impedance low output pickup like Alembic ones which have a similarly high resonant peak but need a suitable high impedance buffer and then voltage gain to drive an amp (which the ACG can probably do) but the Q-Tuners achieve that response whilst also being powerful enough to run totally passive (due to some kind of Dutch black magic in them - or possibly air coils and neodymium magnets...) Alex

That's an interesting idea Alex. Doesn't it do against the Q-Tuner all passive philosophy though?
Having contacted Erno to seek his advice before buying a few Q-Tuners from him for bass builds it goes completely against his philosophy. He appears to me (especially if you read his book Animal Magnetism for Musicians) that he is a purist in every sense of the word. His basses are simply constructed from the finest materials (ebony necks !)and he doesn't even believe in neck reinforcement as it "creates dead spots" and no volume or tone pots as they get in the way of the signal path. That doesn't mean to say his Q-Tuners won't sound good through Alans pre-amps (which I have used and are probably the best there are) but it is a bit like buying a Ferrari 560 and sticking an after-market chip in it !
