YES - "Going For The One" recording session
Stingray5 replied to Stingray5's topic in General Discussion
Nice post. I haven't seen this one before. I am a complete Yes fan. Play a couple of Rics. Here's a pic of my Cs ltd edition Ric and my latest aquisition a set of the new Taurus 3 bass pedals to compliment my Taurus 1's.
Funnily enough I was just checking out the new Taurus 3's and you'll be the perfect chap to ask how they compare next to the T1's. Love your two Ric's, by the way. The b/w one is the spit of my own, bought new back in '74 from Music City (Shaftesbury Avenue). Oh, how I wish I had the old girl back now! When I think how much I paid back then, too. Case included. Ouch! -
Love it, Squire is the business..didn't know he played a Jazz on that album, or was it just this track?
Other clips show him on the Ricky (e.g., 'Wondrous Stories'), plus acoustic guitar. -
No idea if this has been posted before (it's not that new on Yootoob) but worth a look for Chris Squire's lovely fat Fender Jazz tone and the band really cookin'.

Yeah, it was a good night on BBC Four; I watched the other singer-songwriter programmes too. Great stuff. Loudon Wainwright III is always good for a chuckle too... (e.g., shouts to audience: "Put your hands together! No - don't clap...!!" )

Rats! I was trying to reply to this thread last night when the site was down and gave up. Forgot what I was going to say, now. Think yourselves lucky!!!
So many of you play in covers bands, in fact it seems to me that all of you do!!! What is the appeal of playing in a covers band? I've never understood it. I've always played in a band that writes and performs its own material - very very very rarely have we ever thrown a cover into our set and I always felt it was a pointless exercise. Does anyone here, apart from me, play in a band that writes its own material?
Nice one, Twigman - only 6 hours and you're up to 8 pages on this thread! If you've never played in a covers band, and have no inclination to, I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. If what you do floats your dinghy, that's great. I play in both originals and covers bands and have done for most of my musical life (40+ years) and don't feel the need to choose one or the other. I love both, for many of the reasons already stated above. At the end of the day (and night!), I'm out there playing music. Surely, that's what counts?
Cheers Alex....I genuinely can't put it down.....I'm currently sat jamming it with some Al Jarreau!
Lovely looking bass and a neck to swoon over! Al Jarreau - nice! I used to play along all the time to his first two or three albums ('Spirit' is a nice track to jam along to).

Function/covers band: if we've not had a special request for an opener, we'll go by what the audient looks like. Younger, older, ready to party, ready for bed... All of the above? We'll play it by ear but will probably opt for safe but uptempo (for example, Blues Bros "Everybody" into James Brown "I Feel Good").
you may have to turn this down, bad Q..but she gotta jazz bass.. i erm....want to marry her.. I definitely dig, B5! She plays bass - how much better can it get? I need to check out the new stuff.
Is that the band that sound like the Courtney Love show? I mean Hole?
Dunno - do they!?
+2 on 'Everything Everything' Great bass player and band with Jamiroquai, but I thought it was very souless as music..heightened only by the musicianship of his band. KT Tunstall was quite good and so was Ray Lamontagne.. and there was a really fresh sounding band (American i think) who had a great bass player; played with a pick but it was really melodic and unihibited!
Have to agree re Jamiroquai. KT Tunstall seemed more comfortable and at ease when she did 'Perfect' with Jools.
Just watched them and must admit the new song's a bit bland, loved the re-worked Deeper underground though. I was saying to my wife that so much stuff's been done before that it's all a bit samey. Then Everything Everything came on and it was fresh , different and exiting. I'm listening to the album "Man alive" on spotify as I type. Reminds me of a cross between It Bites and Thomas Dolby............ Really rather good
Yep, must admit 'Everything Everything' caught my ear, too. The general sound of live music on the Beeb is still as naff as ever!
My beloved 30th anni SR4, just celebrated our two year anniversary. Love it to bits, one of my all time favourite basses.
Mmmm, nice!

Funnily enough, I just checked the TV guide and saw they would be on so I'll be tuning in. There're a couple of other acts I'll be interested to see, too (KT Tunstall, Ray LaMontagne). The new Harry and Paul show before it at 9.30 looks like it might be a laugh. Particularly the Silver Haired Beatles!

In a way, I thought the same about the original Led Zep track and how funky they sounded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGe19nbMhaY

Couple of sets of Pro Arte classical guitar strings.... oh, and a non-latching footswitch! Sorry, it's been a while since I bought any major bits of kit.

Yeah, I always wondered what happened to that old MFI coffee table!

Too loud, no sensitivity, no articulation..

I wouldn't say you're being a snob, B5 You mentioned the keyword in your OP -- which some bands just don't seem to get -- 'dynamics'. -
Here are my three. I am now running a purely MM stable!!
Nice trio, TK! I'm bound to say I'm absolutely loving the finish on your 5-er. Rays rule!

Still looking? (...Actually that wasn't meant to be a band name suggestion, but it might work!? ) This is what I meant to post: http://www.bandnamemaker.com/ or http://bandnamr.com/ also http://www.wikihow.com/Find-an-Interesting...e-for-Your-Band
I placed an ad on one of those sites, you know lonely hearts for musicians and got a reply from a guitarist who sounds rather good if I'm honest. There's a drummer and potentially a warbler. Well it's just dawned on me that in the past year that I've been noodling around on the bass I haven't actually learnt a cover in full. Well by that I mean I'll have sort of learnt one on a night and then completely forgotten a) how to play it and/or b ) what the damned song was in the first place. So your mission, if you wish to accept it, is to come up with a few covers (4 or 5 at the max) that are very quick and easy to learn but sound alright. By easy I mean nothing with loads of fills and variations in it, repetitive is the key word here as I've got a lousy memory Oh, some are on the scratched off list already - Sex on Fire, All Right Now, Sweet Home what's it, Mustang doo dah, you know the score.
You want very quick; you want easy to learn; sound alright. You don't want loads of fills and variations. You want repetitive... Ok, these may be way off the mark, or you may have covered/dismissed them already, but how about... * U2 - "Still Haven't Found..." * U2 - "With Or Without You" * U2 - probably most of their other stuff too! * Pink Floyd - "Another Brick In The Wall" ...to name three. Yes I know -- but you did ask!

For me, it's more a case of what other bass to take as my Stingray5 has been my main go-to bass for the past 14 years. If it's a function/cover band gig, I'll usually grab my Jazz as a 'backup' bass. Maybe play it for one set just so it doesn't sulk all the way home! If it's something more substantial (Prog, recording, etc.), I'll usually add the Tune 6-string and a fretless.

Dunno why, but I've always assumed it was pronounced with a 'hard' G, as in Goodfellow, as opposed to a 'soft' G, as in GB.
