1.
Well its still quite 'middy' compared to the the fenders. But that 18v preamp is a crazy horse. Its just so powerful. The bass and Treble EQ kicks the fenders into touch and with the added hi and low mid options (that I tend to keep the lows more dominent and the hi's cut quite a bit) its just tone overload for me. Plus the blend of the pups again just keeps you smiling with the sheer grunt you get from either pup depending on the eq setting of course. The playability of the bongo is just as perfect as my stingray was, however the jazz necks just fit so nicely. I seem to pick up the bongo more often however this could just be because its my new toy. The fenders are also nicer to look at ive been told (by everyone so far ) If i was to have 1 bass right now,,,its the Jag, however watch this space as I havent gigged or had full rehearsal with the bongo yet.
Can't say I blame you about keeping the Jag, given only one bass. I quite fancy one myself. I must admit it took me a while to get used to the look of the Bongo though when I tried some (incl 5- and 6-stringers) at a couple of previous music shows, I guess I was pretty much converted.
  2.
thanks for all the advice. I got myself an EBMM SUB from this site. Very pretty. Strings are very light but great action and intonation compared to the MIM precision that I have been slogging. thould really get myself a combo amp but I am reluctant to have both a guitar and bass amp. Anything to stop you having a guitar through a bass amp?
Nice one. Hopefully you'll be sorted in the bass department then. Nothing wrong with putting guitar through a bass set-up if you EQ it accordingly. A number of guitar players use a Fender Bassman head and cab. A drummist I work with had a Bassman 50 head with a 1x15 cab and it sounded great, particularly for Blues and Jazz and even a bit of Soul.
  3.
my new addition to the family
I'd be interested to know how the Bongo compares to your Jag and Aero basses. Will it become your 'go to' bass?
20th Anniversary SR4 - The feel of the neck is just amazing on this one. And you just gotta love that quilt.
I'm not sure what I fancy more - that quilt finish, or that girl in JTUK's avatar! Actually, I do know... it's......!?!
  4. The original "Oceans Eleven" featured the Red Norvo Quintet backing Dean Martin on "Ain't That A Kick In The Head". But I'm sure I've seen another movie that featured an appearance from Red Norvo with his old buddy Tal Farlow on guitar. Might have been a quartet or a trio. Anybody know what I'm on about? Bilbo? Anyone?
  5. Already posted to say I'm in but not on the updated list so I've added myself. Hope that's ok. I note Clarky and bottle not there either though they have said they're coming. 7.
Tyler guitars. Their headstocks look horrible too.
+1. They may well be great instruments to play, but that headstock/logo - ugh!
  8. He was certainly one of the better acts at High Voltage. Played an excellent set, I thought.
  9. So many songs, so little time... here's four... Thanks, CK, for the 'four-square' idea.
  10.
Silly Love Songs - Wings Waiting on a train - Flash and the Pan We close our eyes - Go West Wild Horses - Gino Vanelli No more fear of flying - Gary Brooker Everything - Michael Bublé The Year of the Cat - Al Stewart Right down the Line - Gerry Rafferty Hollywood Nights - Bob Seger
+1 for the Gino Vannelli and Go West tracks. On a different slant, another tune that never fails to lift my spirit is one of my fave TV theme tunes ever...ever... Man, I just love that walkin' bass and strings! Theme from "Route 66" (1962)
  11. Both. Depends on the piece I'm playing. If it's a chord, double-stop or finger-picking thing, I'd probably go index-ring-pinkie.
  12.
Bar just pulling his penis out on stage and wagging it for two minutes straight and grinning
Totally agree. Mind you, when he's not playing silly buggers, Naruse is a hell of a player.
  13.
Takes three minutes to get interesting, and i still don't care. Have i missed something? The slap section is rough too. The guy is playing a lefty Stingray, Strung like an upside-down righty...hmm. Still don't care. *i don't personally get it, as a 'demo'*
Must admit I didn't notice it was strung like an upside-down righty. I don't care either!
  14. ...It's actually not too much of a slap-fest, either!
  15. I'm keeping an eye on this thread and (depending on gigs etc) hopefully will be up for a trip to Cambridge (or Ipswich, etc).
  16. With his usual OTT-ness, Casiopea bassist Yoshihiro Naruse plays this marathon solo with his 8-string Tune TWB-T bass. Some brief whammy at the beginning (harm.), then around 2 minutes in.
  17.
I will try and get some shots together for you but in the mean time........ 8 Rays 6 Fenders 5 Overwaters 2 Rickenbackers 1 Wal 1 Hohner B2a 1 Hondo 830 Deluxe 1 Tanglewood Violin Bass 1 Squier Precision
er... gulp?!
  18. Class! Great number, great piece of video, loved the end, too. I played one festival years ago where these guys were also on. They tore up the stage... lovely stuff!
  19.
Updated pics of the collection which has to be thinned Natural is the first going.
Mmmm, nice collection indeed! I'm curious as to which one(s) you will NOT be getting rid of....
  20. Salt Vinegar Tomatosauce
  21.
Now SOLD!
Phew! Just as well, really. I could have been sorely tempted with this as a perfect match for my fretless Ray. Must... resist... too... much... GAS...!!!
  22.
It took me a little while to adjust when I started playing with drummers using electronic kits. I think what can be a problem (much like bass gear actually) is the amplification and cabinets used to play back the drum audio. Small under powered PA speakers for example are cr@p! especially if they need to be cranked, which compounds the issue. The different drums sounds have less definition and rubbish tweeters add so much shrill top end it's difficult to hear the pulse of the kit.
+1 dood is absolutely right regarding the amps/cabs/etc used. It makes a huge difference. The more expensive kits with all mesh heads and better modules have a far better sound and feel, according to Roland-playing drummers I've worked with. One let-down can be when 'real' kit is mixed with 'electronic kit'. This makes it even harder to get a good balanced sound for both on stage and FOH. It's also even more important that everyone is hearing the drums properly via monitors. In smaller venues you can sometimes get away with a good drum amp or small dedicated drum PA rig that the rest of the band can also hear. There's certainly more to it when going with electronic drums and it's understandable why drummers would rather stick to acoustic kits. But on one particular gig I played a while back, the drummer had a top-of-the-range Roland TD-20 which sounded glorious, especially through a decent PA. And of course, when working with a drummer who just can't hit the drums hard enough, it's easier to bring him down!!
  23.
It's not been the same for a long time. I've struggled to overcome it and adapt but I just can't do it. For years I was happy but I have just recently been told that what ever I do or have done, it just won't sound as good as if I had an Ampeg SVT head. I now feel a failure, not only to myself but to all my fans who I have subjected them to the non Ampeg SVT tone. How they will ever forgive me. For years they surely were just listening to the bass as all music lovers do and I have clearly led them up the garden path with an inadequate non Ampeg SVT tone. I think its time now to bow out, ashamed and as a failure as a non Ampeg SVT playing bass player. I just hope others can find the strength to carry on with there rubbish sounding Traces, Ashdowns, Genz Benz, Mark Bass etc amps. Be strong boys, think of Blitey and I'll see you on the other side.
Aye, we're all doooomed, I tell ya!!!

Raising a glass to the Old Git today (@ 11:30am)... Cheers, Si!
  25. Ah, nostalgia - it IS what it used to be! No doubt, some will be saying the same thing in 20 or so years time about the 'noughties' having some pretty good stuff in it. Not like the crap being served up in 2020/2030...
