I voted black too, though I do quite like red tort on black. If you kept it white, how about going with white pearl? I did that with my own Jazz, (also my 'Ray). Much nicer, imho! -
Pedal Steel (twin-neck? or possibly a single?)

Just bought a rare Westone Thunder 3 Fretless...
Stingray5 replied to bassatnight's topic in Bass Guitars
Folks, I have lusted after a Westone Thunder 3 Fretless for as long as I can recall after seeing Henry Thomas on the 80's show Rockschool play one. I had no idea what to pay as these babes come up so rarely. I saw one go for £375 a couple of years back so took a punt at £400 and managed to secure it, its in great conditon did I pay over the odds or just right? I just didn't feel I could hang about. Steve.
Link? Pics? £400 might be at the higher end of what these are generally going for, though not by much. A Thunder II recently went for £321 and I just put a link to another Thunder II in the Ebay Links section (4 days to run). And one recent over-optimistic seller stuck one on Ebay for a BIN of £700! (Tbh, can't remember if it was a II or III). Bottom line is, if you're happy with it and it's a good one, you could well have a bass for life there. -

The owner of this rather nice looking Thunder II states it has never been gigged. It's currently at just over £100 (not that it's gonna finish there! ) Would be a perfect match for my fretless but....no....must....resist.... Ooh, I just stumbled on this thread so thought I'd add my two-pence-worth. Or rather I should say my two Westies worth! Also got the two Rays though they're really more cousins, one 5 and one 4. What I'd like now is a 4 or 5-string match for my Tune bass. (Click on my sig pic below if you want a closer look).

That's a beaut, Clarky! Knowing even some of your collection, I don't think I'd have the heart to ask you to choose your 'desert island bass'... (That said, feel free to respond if you want to. )

Interesting observation this evening...
Stingray5 replied to thisnameistaken's topic in General Discussion
I don't suppose it had anything to do with your band simply having a better sound balance overall, compared to the other three bands and the "rock sludge of their guitarists" (not to mention possibly their drummers, too) simply drowning out the respective basses? Or perhaps the other bass players just weren't man enough to be driving Stingray's/Sterling's! -
Aw Looking for tracks to do in my new trio project I was looking forward to seeing how three people managed this ..
Well, chaps, the clue was in the title 'CGT+2' although more correctly, from the album, they are 'CG3+2'. I managed to catch the CGT + Tony Levin in the US some years ago and they were amazing. It was Levin's gig but he was happy to play the supporting role a lot of the time and also left the stage at one point to let them do their thing. Which included a superb version of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. I must admit I wouldn't have minded a drummer coming on stage for a number or two, but all the same, it was still a great evening.
yep....trio..?????? You would think Levin would get those stick extentions made up properly for the amount of time he features them... Plasters..??
I know - they always look as if they're about to drop off any second! I tried it once with some lolly sticks and gaffa tape! Just don't forget to take 'em off if you go for a pee!!
Don't think this has been posted yet: Here's a 'live' version from Soul Train which opens with the bass man playing the riff with a pick. Faster than the original but the suits & dancing are worth a look, lol:
I always loved that opening; one of the few numbers where I might use a pick.

Here's something for Monday lunchtime! I thought I'd post this live version of "Heart of the Sunrise" by California Guitar Trio with Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto. It's a very faithful recreation of the Yes original (though with no keyboards or vocals). If you like, here's their original recording of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka24HSdNEO0

But that video is truly awful!!
Sorry to say I have to agree. Imagine if Verdine had played that exact same solo(!) without any of the running and jumping around... I doubt even the audience would have had anything to scream about.
Ernie watts, you mean... ?? He would have been about the top tenor player at that time.. along with Brecker and Scott.
DOH! Quite right, sir. I wouldn't mind but, as mentioned in my previous post, I dug out the actual album to check other credits and although I read Ernie Watts, for some reason wrote Ernie Watkins. I really must stop posting in the early hours!

Still on the subject of EWF, this might also be of interest to some. Back in the 70s I bought an LP by Jazz singer Carmen McRae called 'Can't Hide Love' (Bluenote, 1976). It was her bid to put out more of a 'crossover' album at the time and I spotted it and subsequently bought it on the strength of the title track being an EWF cover. Also the fact that the album line-up of musicians included Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Harvey Mason, Larry Carlton, Dave Grusin, Ernie Watkins and others (though not all of them were on the title track itself). I just dug out the album for a reminder as to who played bass. For most of the album it was Chuck Berghofer. I managed to catch Ms. McRae at a very memorable gig at Ronnie Scott's around 1976/77 when she was touring here with her own small Jazz group. It was nice to hear her do 'Can't Hide Love' live. (I've also never forgotten an amazing scat version of 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' she did with just the drummer). Thanks to the wonder of Youtube, someone else has already put this up...

Verdine is an amazing player. For all the gigs I did see during the 70s, sadly, I didn't make it to an EWF gig. Nor Santana, come to that. How did that happen? And these were -- and still are -- among my all-time favourite bands. The album 'That's The Way Of The World' was my first taste of EWF too. Still sounds just as good today. (Not meaning to divert from the OP, but I can't forget Tower of Power, too! )

The Original Bass Institute (1980's)
Stingray5 replied to iamthewalrus's topic in General Discussion
I did not but my brother did, and he loved it. Remember BIT at Wapping very well. I was always over at the Bass centre, it was a bit of a 'hang out place' Always buying things i did not need! Garry
The early Wapping Bass Centre was bass heaven - especially before the parking meters went up outside!
I allways enjoyed Lawrence Cantys stuff (journalistic that is..) in "making music" a free, but suprisingly good magazine from music shops in late 80's ,mostly ads but come good copy!! I think he wrote a kind of, buyers guide to bass type of book too(?) (have I remembered that right?) any way......
Gad, I'm such a sad geek! You've just reminded me that I actually have that guide book still, called 'What Bass' by Lawrence Canty and Tony Bacon. Also still have LC's book 'How To Play Bass Guitar'. I think I might still have a couple of copies of 'Making Music' somewhere too. It was a very good read, I thought. They also did 'What Guitar', 'The Guru's Guitar Guide' and 'Making 4-Track Music' (and, yes, I'm afraid I still have those too! ).
And i was 2 then...... I did however get to do my audition just before the school moved from Acton then did the 1 year diploma in Kilburn a few years back. Memory is a bit hazy for that particular episode......can't think why....? Did John Curry and Paul Scott work there back then? Absolute legends, whereas that Dave Marks chap.....well..... Rich
I saw John Curry (Currie?) a number of times. Brilliant player and good bloke!
