The Original Bass Institute (1980's)
Stingray5 replied to iamthewalrus's topic in General Discussion
I didn't do the B.I.T. thing myself though certainly remember all the names you mention. A guitarist friend of mine at the time did do the G.I.T. for a while but I'm not sure for how long. I think he felt everyone was coming away sounding too much the same. Send in the clones, so to speak! I'm not sure whether B.I.T. was solely responsible for churning out so many slappers, though? On a similar note, I wonder did anyone else do Lawrence Canty's short course 'Reading For Bass Clef' at Goldsmith's College back in the early 90's? -
What a great looking collection! Just love them MM25's! That Jazz looks like something that could've been designed by Gary 'Cows Of Our Planet' Larson! (Just wondering if you meant to post three almost-identical pics (or am I missing something?). )
Hey peeps Just wanted to recommend this band - I saw this band live in Norway in February and they absolutely rocked it live - just freaky, lairy, funky jazz rock with a serious 60s prog vibe going on - loads of long jams with a killer bassist and drummer and some wild (authentic) Hammond sounds on top: I reviewed their new album 'Walk The Nile' in this month's BGM and I can't recommend it highly enough - one of the best things I've hear this year - it's really very good indeed. Hope some of you dig this Mike
Just goes to show -- what goes around, comes around! Shades of The Nice, Egg and obviously ELP. Maybe even The Peddlers... They've certainly captured that whole early Prog vibe. This calls for some further investigation. Thanks, Mike.
And along comes another one at (currently) less than 1/7th of the price. No argument from me either, Pete. I've seen all three in concert over the years (as I'm sure many others here have, too) and they still remain -- along with Jaco -- among my foremost ultimate bass heroes. Sadly, I missed the SMV gigs last year. Hopefully, next time...!

I've been into BMM getting on for a couple of years now and along with Bass Gear Magazine, with it's rather cool PDF/Flipbook style, it's hard to see how the printed mags can compete with the online interactivity of these. That said, I do still like to get my copy of Bass Guitar Magazine for that more tactile experience.

Of all the forums in all the world, Basschat is the only one where I ever bought the t-shirt and even got off my butt to go and meet a bunch of strangers and had a good time!

B5 - you are on a role once again, sir! Great stuff! JL - that's some seriously groovy bass on that Infectious Grooves track.
Well I love my single cut Sei - and I really don't are if anyone else does or not - but then it is extremely lightweght and easy to play - and having sold my admitedly lovely 1990 original Thumb a while back because it was HORENDOUSLY heavy - I can only imagine that adding even more bulk to the body will make this yukky Wk SC even heavier. Personally I think this is a very cynical piece of design/marketing by Warwick - yet another bass that will cost easily as much as a custom one but be half as playable, good looking or sounding - they are attempting to do 'everything' with their range, including trampling all over custom luthier's terrotory... vote with you wallets people and don't buy this .... IMO obviously!
I must admit, I'm thumbs down (no pun intended) on Warwick's particular SC effort. However, maybe it's the angle of the picture, but your SEI does look rather excellent. Far better finish too.

Anybody had any first-hand experience or otherwise familiar with these? The four Wilkinson Lipstick Single-Coils look interesting... Otherwise, the seller does a nice line in fretlights -- or how about a GlowGuard? See here
Chatting to the lad in the phone shop this week he mentioned he may get a jazz band for his wedding next year. So we nattered about wedding music, etc and he mentioned his mate has a band that does all sorts. Of course being a local muso I asked who was in the band "Mark and his cousin who plays bass. His parents had that restaurant on North rd, Palladinos. I think his cousin has played with some famous people" Yes folks, Pino Palladino is playing his wedding Cheap too I explained who Pino had played with - like the Who at the Superbowl this year, Paul Young etc.. He was surprised but not that impressed Of course if you are 21 it's all ancient history ...
Classic!
I don't remember seeing any Thunder IIs selling. But the only completed listing on ebay was a sale for £218 for a black fretless one. I'll be watching and learning for this one.
Yeah, if I recall, that was the later and plainer looking Thunder II; the seller put that up twice for £295 BIN then ran it as a regular auction. -
Is it funky? Does it groove? You be the judge! Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (live 1993) Peter Gabriel - Shaking The Tree (feat. Manu Katche & Tony Levin)

Lessons From Someone Other Than A Bass Player
Stingray5 replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
My ex is an incredible sitarist and studied with Ali Akhbar Khan. She is by far the most accomplished mucisian I have known. I learned an enormous amount from her about music in a conceptual way. I would certainly recommend lessons from an accomplished player of a different instrument if you want to learn about being a musician.
Wow, Ali Akhbar Khan - I'm impressed! I know most people tend to think of Ravi Shankar here when it comes to Sitar -- mostly thanks to The Beatles, I guess -- but I've heard a few things from AAK and he is mind-blowing! I'm certainly no expert myself in this field. No doubt, there are other excellent sitarists around. I just haven't heard them. -

Aaaargh! Someone else who doesn't know the difference between 'brought' and 'bought'! As far as the bass goes, it does look in good nick -- but £750? I'd say a tad optimistic, sir.
