More excellent posts in this thread. (I need to dig out my Shakatak albums again! ) Here's a long-time fave of mine - Gino Vannelli: 1978 - Brother To Brother (feat. Jimmy Haslip on bass) Three views of a song... 1999 - People Gotta Move (live - feat. Alain Caron on bass) *sorry - volume is a bit low on this one. turn it up!* 2007 - People Gotta Move (South Atlantic Jazz Festival, Cape Town South Africa) 2007 - People Gotta Move (live in Holland)

Ah, that's more like it. To just say 'nice'... would be an understatement!
So am I right in thinking there is no mute switch and that would be that the preamp needs new batteries?
That would be my guess. The switch is actually an active/passive switch so if the batteries are dead you should still be able to play on the passive circuitry. New batteries should make quite a difference. Hopefully that's all that's needed and you can get on and enjoy the bass.
I got this the other day, can anyone help me with the controls, one of the switches is working like a killswitch, I think I found the bass knob but it's all quite subtle, maybe the batteries need changing. Cheers
It's a Thunder 1A, active, needing 2 x 9v batteries which may well need replacing. Use decent alkaline's and remember to switch out the active circuit when not needed (lower of the two switches) and they last for ages. Check out this web page (and the rest of the website) for much more info: http://www.westone.info/manual1/index.html

Just a thought but is there a possibility you could take things along the lines of an instrumental outfit whereby someone plays the vocal melody (i.e, guitar, keyboards)? This should keep everyone on track a lot easier and would be more enjoyable than everyone playing a 'backing track' type of thing -- and counting bar after bar! Apologies if this is jumping the gun a bit but you didn't say what sort of line-up it will be. Check out whether a guitard or keybored player would be able to take on the lead part. You never know - you may not need a singer at all. Think of all the headaches the band could be spared in that department!!

For ProgRock fans....a US band from the 70's you may have missed...
Stingray5 replied to cetera's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the reply mate.... I thought I was all alone in my appreciation of this band! I really recommend you purchase their other 3 albums - Ambrosia, Somehwere I've Never Travelled & One Eighty..... classics one & all Yep, nice to hear such a great tone from his X-Factor & a simple Hartke rig... Kenny Gradney is great.... with the aforementioned Joe Puerta & Tiran Porter, Peter Cetera, Dee Murray etc he's one of my faves!
Thanks, I think I will check out the other three you mention (not sure how I missed 'em first time around). Mind you, I'll check out if they're still around on vinyl anywhere as the other two Ambrosia albums I have are part of my vinyl collection. -

Wow, nice to find another Ambrosia fan here and thanks for posting these clips. I have the 'Life Beyond L.A.' album, too. Also have 'Road Island' (1982) with the excellent cover art by Ralph Steadman. I've always considered David Pack to be a hugely under-appreciated vocalist. I remember seeing something on TV years ago with him, Michael McDonald and (I think) Amy Irving working out some harmonies in the studio. Lovely stuff! Interesting to also see Joe Puerta using the X-Factor bass. You'll probably know another of my faves, Kenny Gradney/Little Feat, is big on these. -
I'll see your Stuff and raise you some Phil Upchurch: Jack Of Speed (sadly not the full version) Strawberry Letter 23 Tell Me Something Good
I wonder if we're actually underestimating the number of people who might turn up? Seems to me there should be many in London who might be interested, but who might well not either (a) be aware or ( decide until we have a ddefinite time and place? That said of course we have to know how we're going to cover any cost - or possible shortfall should there be one! I still reckon though if nearly 100 turned out for the SE do, we ought to very easily get far more than 20!
For myself, as mentioned previously, it still comes down to whatever day the Bash ends up on and whether or not I'm gigging. Gigs can mainly be on a Fri/Sat/Sun so I won't say which day I prefer. In that respect, I don't mind. If a gig should fall on the same day as the Bash, I'll still try and make it along but it will depend on the type of gig and how far away I am. As far as payment goes, of course there should be a charge. The SEBB was £10, which seemed fair to me. Is there going to be a raffle? If so, you might want to start a thread for contributions?

Where Have All The Beer Crates Gone?
Stingray5 replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
If you're going to pack your own crate(s), you might want to take a look at these. Ursus Folding Box Blue 46 Litre - £7.98 from B&Q. Folds down for easy storage. Holds up to 30kg in weight (as a container). Disclaimer: I've not used them myself so can't fully vouch for them but they may suit some people. I used to play along all the time to this album, 'The Aura Will Prevail' (MPS/BASF). Vintage George Duke from 1975. Still some of his best stuff (imo). Alphonso Johnson on bass. Floop De Loop - (you can really hear the Zappa influence here! ) For Love (I Come Your Friend) Malibu Dawn
My contribution and I know I've posted this pic before, but I would be interested to know what happened to it! Last seen in Cambridge about 20 years ago! Dave
Dunno what happened to your bass I'm afraid, but I've always fancied a fretted/fretless double-neck. I played a custom built job some years ago made by Fernandes, which was nice. Was your Westone a custom job?

Well worth hearing again, anyway!

Samples from our bands recently finished album
Stingray5 replied to Oscar South's topic in Recording
http://soundcloud.com/lespechesmusic Enjoy. Also a few covers on there from our function band set. There's some bass riffing on 'Sweet About Me' heh.
Interesting takes on the cover numbers, but what I really like to hear is original material from new artists/bands and I must say I liked what I heard here. Not meaning to make comparisons, but I'm curious as to whether Rachel and Sophie draw on any influences from the McGarrigle sisters, or perhaps The Roches? -
They would have been Year 9 (Aged 14) when that was done. They broke up a couple of years after that. The bassist left and was replaced but it wasn't quite the same so they dissapeared.
Ah, of course. That would have made them about 10 or 11! I stand corrected, sir. It's been a year or two since I moved up to secondary school...

There are some good tips here (mostly), but even the most experienced of us can come unstuck at gigs. You'll learn from experience. Have spares of everything (leads, mains lead, strings, fuses, batteries, battery/fuse tester, tool kit, spare change, tea bags, etc. ) It's a well known fact that bass players are the most organized and are the saviours of any band. Bottom line: hope for the best, plan for the worst, have a good time and DON'T PANIC!

Where Have All The Beer Crates Gone?
Stingray5 replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
I remember a previous thread regarding the lack of crates here. The OP also has a link to what might be another solution. -
Never mind their covers (as good as they are), these guys have some pretty decent original material too. http://www.gruhak.com/audio

Yeah, I'd have to agree with ezbass and say where's the Stingray? Nice collection, all the same and it's making me miss my old Ricky even more. Actually, I'm also shy a P Bass in my own set. Oh well, so continues the GAS...
