2. Spyro Gyra with Scott Ambush - I could have probably put these guys in the Funk and Groove thread but wanted to highlight another excellent Jazz-Funk-Fusion outfit and one of the funkiest bassists out there (with all due respect to the other excellent bassists that have appeared on SG albums). Also much respect to drummer Joel Rosenblatt. Spyro Gyra - The Deep End Spyro Gyra - Wiggle Room Spyro Gyra - Scott Ambush bass solo Spyro Gyra - Incognito
3. Just waiting for my ticket. One of my local stores, too. Woohoo!
4. At least no one came up afterwards and said, "hey man, that was great - can you do it again?!"
5. I have to ask, Clarky - got a fave?
6.
I wish I'd known about this website a few weeks ago. I have just collected a EUB from the Tuscan Luthier Biarnel (www.Biarnel.com), and had lots of worry about how to get it home from Pisa to the UK. To cut a very long story short, I eventually came home with it on Ryan Air, having bought an extra seat for it. BA refused, saying it was too long (I really didn't want to dismantle it). It was in a soft gig bag; was not dismantled - i.e. nearly 5 foot long and more delicate than a bass guitar as you can imagine with the bridge etc., and they didn't make me remove the strings. I have to say that Ryan Air were really very good about it, and Pisa airport security were very understanding also. It's now safe and sound at home, where no doubt I'll break it through my own clumsiness somehow
Welcome to Basschat. I'd say you did the only thing you could do with your bass and that was to buy it a seat on the plane. But what a joke BA is increasingly becoming. Given their current wranglings with more strikes looming, it's hardly surprising they're getting a reputation now as "the worlds least favourite airline"...! Main thing is you got your EUB home in one piece. Now don't go and bend it!
7.
I just replaced the tortoise pickguard on my autumn redburst sparkle Stingray 5 with a black one:
I do like tort guards but have to say the black replacement does look nice on yours. I'm also just curious - the B string in your headstock photo seems a little slack beyond the nut. Just wondering if that's the string being a tad loose, or is there perhaps an issue with the nut/slot?
8.
he he..the wonders of wine....erm yeah the Sei is in for a set up and the Fender is at a friends so im bassless..its horrible..but i got BC and youtube...i thought i was the last BCer awake
Ah, nope - I'm still up, I'm afraid! The wonders of computers! Definitely off for some shut-eye now though! Hope it's not long before you're back in the deep end...
9. Wow, B5, you're on a roll tonight! Some excellent posts there, dude - and quite an eclectic mix too. I've been trawlin' the 'tube for some particular bits and pieces but think I'll wait til tomorrow to post as I'm on my second box of matchsticks as it is, trying to keep my eyes open! (No biggie, but I just realized this post replying to bubinga5 should have gone in the 'Funk and Groove' thread. Well, it was late! )
10.
Brilliant - absolutely loved this 8 channels of Clavinet No wonder it never sounds right whenever I hear someone cover it, lol.
+1
11.
I did a gig years ago with a jazz band in support of an orchestra at Stroud House in Oxfordshire (I think). We played and then the orchestra did its thing with fireworks etc. What I noticed most was how little gear they all had I found something else out today. You can't listen to Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites played on the double bass (Edgar Meyer) whilst walking around Ipswich. Too much background noise!!
Ooh, yes, I forgot there's usually also fireworks at the open-air stuff. Another reason for going! You think Ipswich is bad, bilbo? Try some Eberhard Weber solo jazz on steam bass in Chelmsford shopping centre. The ambience is all wrong!
12. Some years ago, I was in the US, in Atlanta, and went to see Andrea Boccelli at the Phillips Arena. He was touring with a full symphony orchestra and choir. The sound was glorious and I have to admit I was also suffering at times with the old lump-in-the-throat syndrome! I've been promising myself for years that I'm going to book tickets for one of the concerts at Kenwood when the season comes around. Live classical music, under the stars, on a pleasant Summer evening with a picnic hamper and a bottle of vino. Makes a change from the local cover/tribute band down the Dog & Duck! Anyone else here done the Kenwood thing (or similar, e.g., Crystal Palace Bowl, etc.)?
13. Michel Colombier - "Dreamland" (feat. Jaco Pastorius)
14. Hmmm, Michael McDonald not 'groove'? Witness for the defence, m'lud! (This is a good Youtube post too, if you want those chords). And here's M.M. with the *other* best voice in Soul... (plus, you can't really go wrong with Nate East and Steve Gadd on bass and drums ). (There's also a nice alternate version of 'Ya Mo B There' with Abe Laboriel on bass, Lee Ritenour on guitar, etc.)
15. Lovely looking bass. I do like the look of that bridge.
16.
The back of the body is pretty flat, and the neck join could really be decribed as 'functional' - just 4 inset woodscrews (but I'm the only one that usually sees that). Ditto for control cavity cover, and lack of screening inside - no problems with hum though. See pic, and also here's how it was, with case prior to fret addition.
Thanks for the extra pics, 27f. I must admit I might not normally opt for the extra frets but in this case, seeing the original 24 fret neck, I'd sooner have them than not. Either way, still a cool looking bass.
17. Yeah, I like that. Very nice contemorary design and that body contouring adds that little bit more quirkiness. I'm assuming the contouring doesn't extend to the back side, but just to complete the picture, how about a couple of rear body/neck shots, if poss?
18. I think that was the reason I vowed never to enter a music shop on a Saturday afternoon ever again!
19. I'd love that for playing slide.
20.
My trace rig at the moment, fookin ell its loud and punchy.1048+1048h+series 6 ah300.With my ratted 1980 sb700 great giggin bass that gets abused but stable as a rock, complete with emgs and active circuit.
Mmm, very niiiiice!
21. I still hope to make it, but it really will depend on the final dates as I have gigs 'n' stuff coming in all the time which, depending on where I am, may or may not allow me to be there. Keeping everything crossed!
22. +1 for Best Practice. And yes, it does also have an A>B type repeat facility.
23. I do love playing my Tune 6-string (see my sig pic) though I guess it gets the most use when I'm doing my Prog stuff. I do take it occasionally on regular covers/function gigs, but it's probably fair to say I'll mainly use a 4 and 5 for those. At the end of the day, you really need to try out for yourself as many as you can to get the feel for what's right for you.
24. Tbh, B5, that sounded like the rehearsal from hell! But then I've never had much time for players who are totally out of it and unable to get it together. As has already been said, if that's what these guys are into and it floats their boat, then good luck to 'em. Frankly, I would have probably resented them wasting my time.
25. As long as I'm still here! Jazz Sluts Passport must....go....to....bed....!!
