Lovely collection. I have to ask -- could you pick a 'desert island bass' from that lot?
I've had Westone GAS since i traded my Thunder 1A about 6-7 years ago,but they aint £60 anymore.
They're certainly not! I'm just watching this Thunder 3 on ebay; just hours to run and currently at £317 (7 bids). I wonder if it'll end up with a BC'er?

Up until a year or so ago, you could have visited Sound Control's superstore below the Virgin Megastore (Zavvi) on Oxford Street. That was the best you would have found in terms of a music superstore in central London. It wasn't bad though I used to get a headache after more than an hour in there. Many of the staff were usually hacked off most of the time with tourists/timewasters/etc. DV247 (whom you mentioned) is of course Digital Village whose four London stores are based north (Barnet), south (Clapham), east (Romford) and west (Acton). Nothing central. If you did happen to find yourself in that desert in the middle of an oasis otherwise known as Romford town centre ( ), then aside from Digital Village, you could also visit PMT (good store from the guys that bought three of the Sound Control stores - though not the Megastore store!). There's also Musicland (only minimal lower priced guitars, mainly for pianos/keyboards) and Drum City (...they sell drums!!). Finally there's a Cash Converters (or whatever they're called this week) where you can find all manner of used music stuff - even the odd bass guitar (with or without strings!!!). Hope this has helped. (If nothing else, it may have re-affirmed your decision to stay in central London). This has been a brief service guide from SR5 Tours unLimited. Next week -- Dagenham!
This is my trusty Series 6 AH200 which has been rack mounted along with the UV light.
A classic. The uv always looks so cool! And I love the 'endlessknobbing.com' sticker...
Useless "Country Boy" fact: the original bassist was Chas Hodges who went on to be the Chas of Chas & Dave.
Chas and Albert were old mates having played together in Head Hands & Feet. (Albert wrote Country boy with HH&F singer Tony Colton). Mind you, I've always liked the Ricky Skaggs version equally as much as Albert's. Yorick - here's Skaggs' recorded version. Skaggs plays acoustic guitar. Might help -- or not! Either way, this is smokin'!
Not wanting to be a pedant, but shouldn't the title of this thread read "Scots Bass Players"?
I believe 'Scottish' or 'Scots' would be correct. What would be incorrect, and often misused in cases such as this, is the term 'Scotch'. Hey, but what do I know - I'm just a lowly Sassenach!
-
Phew! That's not too shabby at all for your first four years! I wonder what the next four will bring?!
-
I'll be honest, BB, and say brown would not normally be my colour of choice - but in this case, I would absolutely make an exception! Absolutely! Here's to a better new year for you and yours.
As a lot of people have said on EB forum though, either your pickup isn't raised in the right place, you need new strings, your technique is dodgy or you're EQing wrong. You cut/boost the wrong frequencies and you'll lose the G string on any bass.
+1 to all the above.
-
Good for you, mate, and well done! Nothing like an 'originals' band to get the creative juices flowing...
-
For luck, actors/thespians will say 'break a leg' before an audition or performance as it's considered bad luck to say 'good luck'. What could we say then, to bass players? Given we don't have the same superstitions, I'm not sure that 'break a string' is appropriate... Whatever it would be, hope the audition goes well.
apparently these things need to be tuned ! and it looks like his sister has taken the knobs on holiday with her http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/bass-guitar-good-con...=item3ca7ed2545
Ah, bless! He's also selling his sisters 20' guitar lead by the looks of it: "...im not sure how long it is but it is very long its not a short one thats for sure. its bright yellow great condition not much to say about a lead..." You got that right, kid!
Bargain of the century I have to say!! As everyone knows it's vintage instruments that have the high price tag. The older it is, the more expensive. Well mine isn't even built for another 17,997 years so it was dirt cheap! Of course the radiator is on. I live in Scotland. Don't want my poor stingray freezing do I! I give it a hat and scarf at night too! Setriously tho, no, it wasn't on and it doesnt usually live there, was moved there for the photo!
Hehe - nice! Love the look of your Ray, btw.
First gig on my own (my mum had taken me to, among others the Pink Fairies, Heavy Metal Kids and Hawkwind) was the Rich Kids at The Nashville in Jan 1978. Got plastered on Double Diamond. School was bad next day.
Wow, you had a cool mum, LEB -- my mum only ever took me to see Father Christmas at Selfridges! Yeah, The Nashville! Good venue. Long after my first gig(s), I used to see bands such as Mealticket and Supercharge there around 77/78. Or we'd head down Fulham Palace Road to The Greyhound and catch Kokomo, FBI, S.A.L.T., etc., and further on to The Golden Lion for more of the same. That was a time when bands would do a mix of covers and original material. And the audience accepted both.
It was the Paul Young Album "Ne parlez" that made the general bass playing public aware of him, though I am sure he was around before. When "Wherever I lay my hat" jumped out of the radio and TOTP we all went "Wha???! What is that and who is that guy?" That was in 1983... The TOTP youtubes generally have idiot DJ's talking over the intro... To my mind he took the Jaco fretless stuff and refined it for a more general audience.
What he said...

I've been watching this 1985 'Super Headless' which is in a non-standard purple colour. Great condition with the original case, it just went for a tad over £300! Great collection, Rich. But who's the kid in the glasses at the back? Does he ever get a look in?
The Sundown was a great venue - one of a few of disused cinemas that had their seats taken out and re-branded as Sundown. I also saw The Who circa 1974 at the Sundown in Edmonton. In (unsuccessfully) trying to find out more about those venues, I came across this eBay ad: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SLADE-:-Original-Tic...91104174002r484 Original ticket price to see Slade - £1 !! Used ticket now sold for £25 !
Crikey! Maybe I should dig out my own tickets and other memorabilia that I said I'd never get rid of! (I jest, of course!). I remember the Sundown, Edmonton - don't think I saw any gigs there though.
I am sure half these gigs have been made up to make people sound cool when actually it was The Nolans or Black Lace. Mine was The Thompson Twins in 1984 at the Brighton Centre.
Hah - made up gig for sure!
October 5th, 1972 - Hawkwind at the Sundown, Mile End, in London.
I remember seeing both Genesis and Fleetwood Mac (separately) at the Sundown around 72/73? My first gig might have been around 1971(?) - Fleetwood Mac, still with Danny Kirwan, at Queen Mary College, Mile End. Can't remember for sure. Guess I must have really been there!
