...We always offer the fist dance as part of our package...
So what's this 'fist dance' you offer...? (sorry, couldn't resist! )

For one particular wedding, the bride and groom wanted "Hillbilly Rock, Hillbilly Roll" by The Woolpackers. It went down so well, we've kept it in the 'reserves' set for whenever it feels appropriate.

Jon Anderson hasn't been too healthy for some time, apparently. The singer is a Canadian chappie - Benoit David. (Not to be confused with US session guitarist David Benoit! )
A looper?
That was my thought too. Something like a Digitech JamMan maybe? Depends on musical style, whether it suits, etc.

Anyone here played Orange Street Music Club, Canterbury?

Might be an anti-bass sound man! -
The black scratchplate arrived this morning (thanks, Dave!) so I thought I'd take some nice pics of the tone-beast...
Mmm, handsome, indeed! Must admit, I do like the black plate on there too. But I also like the black pearl!! Aaaargh, decisions, decisions!

I'd love to think I'll maybe trace and get this one back one day. candy apple red Sterling, traded to eubassix saphire black HH Bongo, traded to bigwan for the 5HH I have now white HS Bongo, traded with power of ten on here(that man has an amazing musicman collection!) vintage sunburst Stingray, went to jezzaboy a few months back teal 2EQ Stingray, retrofitted later with a Status graphite neck and then stupidly sold on ebay (though I did have bills to pay) teal SUB active, bought by v max blues before I was a member on here there were others before these - a natural late 80s Sabre fretless,a black pre EB, an early 90s blueburst SR5, and a 97 honeyburst Sterling none of which I have any pics of unfortunately cheers Keir
If you'll excuse the expression, Keir, you've certainly let go a few beauties!! Ah, so that's where it ended up! Congrats to Dave for the sale - and well done to OTPJ for the purchase. Finally got a decent bass in the collection then?!

I'm posting this for a Jazz guitarist friend of mine who has a new quartet in need of a bassist. Here are the details he has given me: - What we are is:

A modern jazz quartet (tenor sax, guitar, bass, drums) with a bluesy, funky feel to the sound.
Playing standards and modern compositions, with points of reference such as Kenny Burrell’s “Midnight Blue”, Joshua Redman’s “Wish” (with Pat Metheny), Grant Green, Stanley Turrentine, and always Miles!! but taking in lots of influences that are outside the sphere of “straight” jazz – world music, reggae, etc.
Based in Southern Essex but open to offers!!
Looking to record a demo and organise gigs once we have the right player
- What we are looking for is:

A bassist (possibly/preferably double bass? or fretless?) with own gear and transport, located within reasonable travelling distance of the Brentwood area (which is roughly central to the other members)
Someone who would be committed to rehearsing on a reasonably regular basis, learning new tunes and playing gigs
Experience and reading welcome but are less important at this stage than commitment and enthusiasm and an open mind
Age less of an issue – I’m now 51 and our drummer is almost 20!!
Contact: Steve Duke <[]> or PM me for his mobile.

It's a long time since I was in Paris, but Paul Beuscher Music is (was?) very close to the Eiffel Tower: 66 Avenue La Motte Picquet, 75015 Paris

One of the best Gear Porn threads in a long while. A very nice collection, including the ones that got away. Good reading too. Thanks for sharing.
A stunningly beautiful array of Babes!
Got an absolute favourite? What would be your one 'Desert Island Bass'?

I've done plenty of recording, band work and other session stuff and try to avoid the copy/paste scenario absolutely wherever possible. If it's a session restricted by time and/or budget, it might prove necessary and I guess that's ok. But it can sound too obvious depending on the part.

+1 to both the above.

Hey, I needed to get together a set-list of Motown songs. Thanks, Bilbo!
My mate's been banging on about them for a couple of years. I really like "Am I Wry? No", but never paid much heed beyond that. But we went to see them live the other night and I was blown away by so many different things, not least the attention to bass - the basslines were really melodic, the bass tone was fantastic, the bass was quite promonent in the mix. The band generally are all really musical - lots of melodies, both vocal and instrumental. At one point I wondered if Yes or Genesis would even be able to sound as complex and tight (and I'm quite a Yes & Genesis fan). I've hit youtube to find anyone doing a decent cover of the bassline for Am I Wry? No, but there doesn't seem to be anything. Might do one myself if I can get time to nail the line . . . If you haven't checked Mew out yet, they're pretty good anyway and on bass value alone they're well worth a listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-S0qJS9mG4 Mark
Thanks for that! I'd not heard Mew before but I have to say I'll be checking them out further.
I can remember when the only bass magazine you could buy was American. It was full of issues and articles that where irrelevant to me as an English/ British bassist. I bought the guitarist magazines for the one or two pages of bass trivia! If you think BGM is not worth supporting then that is your choice you are under no obligation to buy it, but when it's no longer there I'm sure there will be tread after thread on these pages bemoaning the lack of a magazine that relates to us IMHO. People will be people and find interest in different things/ issues (thankfully) so not everybodys taste will be catered for. Buy it and get what you can from it!!
+1
