1. Happy birthday, peds' bass - here's to the next 21!
2.
"... the fact that I've always got a mic now makes me worry about earthing sh*t through my sh*t..."
Yep - witness Stone The Crows guitarist Les Harvey (R.I.P.)
I believe analogue wireless units use compression and expansion, like the dbx noise reduction on cassette 4-tracks. I think some of them also have highpass filtering (and possibly corrective EQ afterwards as on an RIAA curve preamp). Fortunately most bass rigs have sufficient colouration to hide the deficiencies of wireless, especially once the band is playing! Considering how static most bass players seem to be, I'd have thought a 30' lead would be a better solution to walk the floor during soundcheck (something I regularly do). The only times I have problems with being tethered is if I dance predominantly in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction... RCDs are probably a wise bet if you're a singing bassist - better take my own advice and get one! Alex
Guess it depends on the size of the 'room'. With some of my gigs, a 30' lead is not long enough as, where possible, I like to REALLY walk around during sound-checks and see how things sound from all angles! Even from the loo!! Plus I like to move around on stage. Nothing worse than running back and forth with a guitarist and finding you've plaited your leads nicely together! As an extra precaution, wireless or not, I still use an RCD of some sort.
3.
I still have an old nady 201 from about 15-20 yrs ago. Are they still legal to use?
When my battery pack for my 201 broke some years ago, I went to see about getting it fixed and was informed that both the 201 and 101 were illegal. On a different note, another reason for going wireless is the extra safety of not being physically connected to my gear thus reducing (or even eliminating) the chance of electric shock etc. I've had one or two discussions with other muso types as to the validity of this argument and wondered if someone here could shed some definitive light on this. I've never had to (and would rather not) test the theory first hand!
4. I've been using wireless systems for the last 20-odd years. First was a cheap 'n' nasty single diversity thing from JHS. But not having that trailing lead around my feet really appealed to me, plus I like to move around the stage when and where possible. This led to my then purchasing a NADY 201 system which served me with no real problems for the next 15 years or so. I'm currently using a db system -- cheaper than the Nady but, again, works fine for me - apart from when I was doing a function in a large hotel and another party taking place in another suite complained my bass was coming through their DJ's speakers! Not entirely sure, but we suspected it might have been the hotel's own wireless Tannoy system switched on in both suites picking up my frequency. Who knew?
5. Wow, I didn't realize Vinnie was doing drums for Joan Rivers Late Show back then. Jimmy Johnson is just seriously good. Period. One of my main reasons to watch Saturday Night Live was to catch the studio band and Will Lee on bass. (US talk shows always have great house bands. e.g., Kevin Eubanks' band on the current Late Show; drummer Max Weinberg's band on Letterman). Oops, apologies to Jake for going slightly off-topic there.
6. Plenty of bass synth type sounds in the Boss GT6-B. And with the GT10-B out now, the GT6's may be that bit cheaper too. It's just a matter of whether the 6 has the particular sounds you're looking for, I guess. Pity, you could have tried mine last Saturday.
7. +1 to the previously mentioned Panama and/or Stetson. Have to say I'm guilty of having worn both in the past (...though not at the same time ) Failing that - this might work: or this - especially if you get a little peckish mid-gig:
8. Just like to add my thanks and appreciation for what was a great day of much bass-related stuff. And well done to all for the amount raised for charidee! Thanks to all those who organised and put things in place and gave demo's and talks. Not forgetting Mrs Hamster for tea and buns ! Hope to make it again next year. Cheers!!
9. Jackson Brown's excellent album 'The Pretender'. 'Hold Out' is worth checking too.

11.
The Harlot without a doubt. It was made for me after all. Closely followed by the NS5
I sorta knew you'd say that!
12. Mmm, that's some classy bass porn you have there. Which one would you pick as your 'desert island bass'?
13. Mmmmm -- Eve Myles! :brow: Nice one getting your song placed. The show looks like it could be one to watch.
14. I'd have to say no to the question. I don't do drugs (never have really, never felt the need). I do like a drink but not when I'm working (i.e., gigging) which also means I'll be driving! No amount of having a drunken or stoned 'good time' is worth losing my driving licence for. But I also don't preach to others about the dangers, pitfalls, whatever, of drink and drugs - hey, it's your life and/or liver! I probably just wouldn't be working for long with someone who was forever falling down (literally) on the gig. The world is not laughing with you...
15.
"So far away" oooooooooohhh lush.
Yep - that's a lovely song. Do you know The Crusaders version?
16.
This is my 89 'Ray5, its my baby and i loves it!!! My apologies for the dirty state of it, i just taken it out of its case since coming back off my last tour with the band. Question i need to ask is does anyone know if this is an official finish or did the previous owner sand it down and varnish it? lol.
Whatever it was/is, it has a lovely antique-looking finish now. Ray's rule -- 'specially the 5!!
17. More strings! Aside from the Trace Acoustic strings (#2), I have a set of Tru Bass 88's. Black flatwound. I was going to fit them to another bass and decided not to, but not before just trimming the end of the E string slightly. It went on the bass for about a minute and was removed and put back into it's packet. (These are new-old-stock, unused). 1. Trace Elliot Stainless Steel strings 40-100 gauge 2. Trace Elliot Acoustic Phosphor Bronze strings 40-60-80-100 gauge 3. Bassic-bits 1m. Speakon to Speakon cable 4. Nikkai 6m male speakon/ male speakon cable (x2, brand new) 5. Nikkai 6m XLR female/male Mono 1/4" jack cable, brand new 6. Mikey's bass book (title tbc!) 7. La Bella Double Ball S100L Strings, 040 / 060 / 075 / 095 8. The Incident - Porcupine Tree CD 9. Rotosound Tru Bass 88 Black Nylon Flatwound strings (65-75-100-115) 10.
18. Phew! Good sequel to the 'British' edition, Jan. (Nice to see my old Ned Callan 'Cody' in that one ). I must admit I recognised only a small number of names in the new 'Latin' edition. Also interesting to note how many more EUB's are in there. So what part of the world is the next edition coming from? Cheers, Steve
19.
Here's my Stingray. Picked it up in Andertons a few years ago second hand. I sold it earlier in the year on the forum but bought it back when the chance came up.
Nice! What year is it? (Guessing early to mid-90's?). Looks like you weren't parted for too long from it.
20. I have a new set of acoustic bass guitar strings (see #2) 1. Trace Elliot Stainless Steel strings 40-100 gauge 2. Trace Elliot Acoustic Phosphor Bronze strings 40-60-80-100 gauge 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
21. Very nice! And great to see the SB-1000. That was the bass to have in the 80's and still looks great today (imo).
22.
Btw. I managed to read your thread title as "Do you listen to your truss rod cover?" - I must be dyslexic!
So doesn't everyone hear voices coming from their truss rod cover???
