I've followed this thread with interest from the outset and have both agreed and disagreed with various comments and remarks though, up to now, have resisted adding my 2p-worth. Ok, so -- for what it's worth -- I've been buying BGM almost from the first issue and will continue to buy it having seen it improve vastly in recent months. I'm also enjoying the latest issue though have not read it cover to cover... yet! However, as has been mentioned previously by others here, I am also still finding typo's and certain other errors that I feel warrant a mention. From the current issue: - Front cover: (sub-heading) "ELBOW Pete Turner on the making of the The Seldom Seen Kid" - Editorial (p.8): Final paragraph "recieved" (note - 'i before e except after c' ) - Take Five (p.17): letter spacing for Jean-Jacques Burnel makes his surname look like Jean-Jacques Bumel! That's all I'm going to say in this regard. Sorry if I'm being picky here. To be honest, I could mention a couple of other more minor points but really don't want this to be a total put-down of the magazine. It was just the above-mentioned 'errors' that jumped out at me and sshouted "Boo!", that I felt should be pointed out. On a positive note, I like the layout of the magazine which has a bright and modern presentation. Well done, keep improving and keep it coming! None of the above will put me off buying BGM which I shall continue to do. Hell, it's all we've got over here! No doubt we'll continue to play "Spot The Typo" too... Cheers, Steve
Last week a friend gave me her bass but I accidently dropped it and damaged it beyond repair so what I wanted is find what sort of bass it is and where I can buy an exact replacement she has gone to America so is as yet she doesn't know it's damaged Here's an image before it was damaged If it helps it has DeArmond and Pilot write on it. I really don't wish to tell her I've broken it so if I can find a replacement it would be much appreciated
Hmmm - good looking, plays bass, sings too and able to balance an apple on her head all at the same time! Anyhoo, as has been suggested, I'd go along with coming clean. The cost of repair may well out-weigh, or at least be close to, the value of the bass (if it's not sentimental to your friend). She might appreciate a 'new' bass instead(?).
Thought that might get your attention...but i stand by my claim.. ive always thought Donny Hathaway has the best voice of all the greats...to me his voice is pure power and control...a bit like Aretha...Probably my favorite album that i have ever owned is Donny live with Willie Weeks.. The best bass playing ive ever heard IMO...i love Willie's note choices and total groove playing on the tune below.....for me it doesnt get any better than this....This album had such an affect on me when i started to play bass, and its stayed with me ever since.. Donny's version of Marvins 'Whats Goin On' on this album is supreme also... Donny was the man... for me, he was a man/musician, that didnt let himself become, what he could have been.. . anyway, im sure you heard this before... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUSknnYo77g
While I can't quite bring myself to agree with you that Donny was better than Stevie, I will certainly say that he was as good as Stevie - in a different way! (How's that for a cop-out? ) Seriously though, I've often talked about Donny Hathaway's voice being on a par with Stevie Wonder. Tone, expression, phrasing - all top-notch. I have the live album too and it's always been one that I've said: "I wish I was at that gig!" I also have the Donny Hathaway album 'Extensions Of A Man', which shows the extent of his genius for composition and arrangement. This guy was certainly more than just a soul singer. One of his finest moments for me was 'Someday We'll All Be Free'. Chord sequence (esp. the chorus), trumpet solo, bass lines.... Ok - I shut up, you listen:
Britain being the home where novelty songs can top the charts, this song is well off the cheeseboard. Quasi religious, maybe, there were a few in the 80s, ... but fromage is Simon Cowell in a dog suit doing the bow wows.
Agreed!

+1 to Tower Of Power - particularly 'What Is Hip' & 'Don't Change Horses In The Middle Of A Stream'. Oh, in fact, just listen to anything with 'Rocco' Prestia...
I'm referring to this track for those who don't it. Yes, it's one of those typical cheesy 80's tunes, but having listened to it again since starting to learn the bass, it actually has an amazing simple, yet effective bass line. I find it very interesting these days listening to all my music and actually listening out for the bass line.
"...it's one of those typical cheesy 80's tunes..." ??? er...I beg to differ! I know the 80's had it's fair share of cheesy stuff - as did the 60's/70's/90's and now the noughties - but 'Broken Wings', for me, ain't one of 'em. Come to that, I'd have to say neither is their other classic track, 'Kyrie'. But you're certainly right that it's a simple yet effective bass line. p.s. - IMHO
im on a mac.. you can probably do it in garageband.. but ah well Z x
BestPractice (http://www.xs4all.nl/~mp2004/bp/) would be ideal but it appears it's only available for Windows. -
That does look nice! Any chance of a rear-view pic? Looks like some nice figuring on the headstock.

+1 on the trolley. I fitted Ernie Ball removable castors to my Trace bass combo years ago and they've paid for themselves a million times over where any back pain might be concerned. I mainly use my trolley for my Trace 2x10 cab. My gig box is one of those tool-box-on-wheels things from Halfords/B&Q/etc. The more wheels the better!
Its kinda nice to have people behind you, for Ex: basschat. and sure, constructive criticism is needed for improvement. But im also sure there was other ways you could have said what you just did. Z x
Absolutely. My sentiments would have been the same whether you were 17, 27 or 67!! It was a bloody good effort and deserved praise for that, at least. Of course, you/it will get better. You go girl! -

Really really really really really well done, Zoe! No, really!! -
There's no irony d00d, I counted them and there aren't that many more in BP than BGM in terms of page space, and the both have about the same number of pages.
Actually, I'd say the irony is in the quote Rich gives from Sk8, who said: "Will stick to Bass player when i can find it".

Not surprised Overwater don't want to take it off of their site. That's a beaut!

I bought a platted leather belt (found in a charity shop) which, when done up, overlays the small metal buckle. I'm now more in danger of my bass getting 'leather rash', I s'pose! +1 on moving any buckle to the side. Sorted.

This put me in mind of Grateful Dead's 1974 Wall of Sound PA rig. "Like, uh, where do I plug the bass in, man?"
I rarely use my Thunder III in active mode, since I prefer its passive tones. But the active circuitry stays on as long as there's a jack plugged into the bass - the active/passive switch is just a bypass, so I just got into the habit of unplugging. I think the active circuit has to stay on because if you switched the power on manually you'd hear a thump through your amp. If the batteries are on the way out I find I get plenty of warning from the bass's tone and I always carry a couple of spare PP3's. I have to replace the batteries every year or so - Westone claim around 200 hours' use per set.
You may be right. Now maybe I'm being thick here (not hard for me ) but I am able to use my Thunder II basses, in the passive position only, without any batteries being installed. So is that still using the active circuitry?
-
TBH, what I'd really like is a little miniature switch for ON/OFF. That way the bass can be left plugged in all the time. I mean, how hard can it be? Why don't the manufacturers do this?
My two Westone Thunder IIA's (see sig photo) both have active/passive switches. In fact, all my basses are active aside from the Jazz.
Ah! Those things eat batteries! One of the reasons I've switched back to cables, can't afford it lol.
Yeh, I'm not averse to going wired when needs must. But the less spaghetti around my feet, the better! And when I have room, I do like to run around a bit...
-
If you happen to forget to unplug, make sure you at least have a good quality alkaline battery in there such as, as previously mentioned, a Duracell Plus or Ultra or similar. Even left plugged in, I would expect more than 2 days use (unless of course the battery is at the end of it's life!). I always keep a couple of fresh batteries in my gig box too, along with a battery checker. (My wireless battery pack goes through far more 9v's than my bass ever does).
headstock as requested... Full length one when the light is right.
Yeh, that's nice! Love the look of the inlays - what are they?!
-
Lovely looking bass, Sean. Just to complete the 'porno' aspect, any chance of some neck/head shots? And maybe a nice full length one too (oo-er missus!) -- provided you have enough digital film left in your camera!! Cheers, Steve
