Go for it - you're never too old to learn new tricks (well that's my motto and I'm certainly no spring chicken!) ๐ I'm a huge fan of Mark at Talking Bass and the way he teaches. This is his paid online course Learn to Play Slap Bass: Including Funky Videos Lessons and Bass Tab (talkingbass.net) - works out at about ยฃ1 a lesson, which frankly is a bargain (and he does a load of other courses too e.g. walking bass lines etc) But he's got plenty of free online material to dip into too including on the basics of slap.

It seems to me that VT 500 is a 500W power amp (I presume into 4 ohms) with a VTDI pre amp, from the control set. Do you know what the bass EQ on the amp is centred at? I'm intrigued that it is has a bigger low end than the DG, given that the DG's bass EQ is centred at 80Hz but the bass EQ centre on my VTDI pedal is at 125 Hz.

That DG M900's days are defo numbered!! But tbf they've been numbered for a quite a number of days but somehow stayed in the henge? I guess it provides quite good support to the amps above it in the stack and is not too shabby on the eye?

I don't like slap when it's done badly or overcooked and gives no thought to the context in which it is being used. Not sure too many bass players do? I think slap can be fantastic when it's played with skill and used appropriately, especially for funk. Most folk can enjoy that and audiences very much seem to! Having worked on the technique for the best part of 18 months, must admit I've got a ton more respect for bass players who have nailed the skilful use of slap. It's a technique like any other and another potent tool in our kits. Some bass players don't like 5 or 6 string basses. Some don't like slap. That's cool.

I don't think this guy would get turned down for audition if he turned up with his 6 string: https://youtu.be/hmkR3gmJh7w?t=220

Damn he's good!

Had a bit of think about best place for HPF when introducing new low freqs via octave-down and filter, and decided to compromise by putting it mid-board immediately before my little Zoom multifx but after all the additional low-f stuff. I'll have to 'fess to having an ulterior motive in that I've got a couple of pedals offboard that I was really keen to find some space for, so I took the opportunity to sling the Thumpinator below board as an "always-on" pedal and have now slotted in a Pigtronix Octava in its place.

'Fox on the run' synth with a Boss Bass synth SYB5?
Al Krow replied to Sarah5string's topic in Effects
You're too kind Mr Way-Slimmer-than-Me ๐ And Sarah is defo one of my fav BC'ers simply for having started the best bass thread ever (and for being a Midlander, of course), so... The real expert (and a long long way ahead of me on this stuff!) is @Quatschmacher FWIW - I've had a SYB-5 and it was very glitchy. In fact it was my most disappointing purchase of that year! The replacement Boss SY-1 is streets ahead of it in tracking and other features. Not sure it can do what the OP is after though. In fact the answer might be to avoid a bass pedal entirely and, for the same price, get this: -

However... Fair enough and each to their own. But pleased to read just a few weeks later... So, looks like we all now kinda agree? Enjoy your Yamaha, they can and do make a mighty fine bass! ๐

But a good shock hearing what it's capable of with the gain ramped? I have fan noise with my Mesa M6, which is something I just expect when I turn the thing on and instantly forget the moment I play a note. I'm hoping the same will be true on the Bugera Veyron.
-
Done ๐ And if anyone else would like their "wall of shame" entry on the OP updating or being included for the first time - please feel free to let me know (on here or by PM) and I'll happily oblige. It's informative / nice to know what folk are playing and deciding to hold on to - particularly as a few of the models are over 30 years old and all the way through to the PH released just a few months back which shot straight to the top of the popularity charts, certainly on this side of the pond!
-
Congrats!! Looking at the "wall of shame" on the OP it seems that BB415s are pretty rare beasts, in fact you're the only out of all of us who I know has one!

@FDC484950 really good post, thanks. However I don't think anyone really notices whether we're playing 4 or 5 strings though, so it's a little different to a big drum kit taking up a lot of stage presence? I mean it was two hours into the first rehearsal that I took a 5 string to before my bandmates spotted the change, and even then it was only when I stopped and asked them if there was anything different about my set up! ๐ But perhaps a 6 string bass is a little more unusual in that regard? But my sense is actually not that much really and if it was played well no one is going to mind at all - it certainly doesn't take up any more stage presence than a 4 string. On the other hand you might be expected in some quarters or at the recording studio to turn up with a Fender P.

The best review I've found on YT of the 1001M. Nice warts and all "honest" review and very thorough. (With subtitles for the hard of foreign language speakers like me ๐) Damn I wasn't expecting that juicy break up at 3.20! That's made my mind up!

Well it's a toss up between this and the TC RH750 currently on sale for ยฃ349 at Andertons, for a spare / back-up amp for me with wedding gigs starting up again. Both look very good value. Besides, there always does seem to be a price for starting a BC thread... ๐
-
DV247 currently have the 1001M in stock for just under ยฃ200 (without the several month wait that Amazon seemed to be having when we were last posting on here), if anyone is on the look out for a well featured budget amp. Bugera BV1001M Veyron Mosfet Head | DV247 | en-GB Obviously folk won't have had much chance to use theirs in anger since the last posts on here which were immediately before lockdown kicked in, but be good to hear from those of you who pulled the trigger on one of these if you've all still held onto your Veyrons and are rating them?
-
Be interesting to know there's a difference in price between those and the 424 and 2024 pup prices.

If Handbox did an R-600 or R-750 I'd get one tomorrow as I typically play without PA support. So my hesitation is 8 ohm cab = limited to around 200W with the R-400. Wat can't you put in a word? ๐

+1^^ for old school Mesa. Only small "disagreement" is that for me the Mesa M6 is fantastic: I've not come across anything better yet; but clearly my cleanliness doesn't match up to thodriks...๐
-
Congrats on the new bass!! Looks great and I bet it sounds and plays great too. Even more so if this is a step up from your previous Elrick Evo5 which you're going to no disagreement from me when you say it "was a wonderful bass"! ๐ Must admit I'd not really come across the Elrick brand before your previous Evo5 ad, but Rob Elrick's workmanship is definitely worth folk checking out if they get a chance. The quality and sound is right up there with the very best.

@Sarah5string you've just made my day! It's not 'cos you're using a beatbuddy mini for practicing, but rather because I've often wondered who the BC'er was who started this fantastic and enduring thread, which you'd not been on for a long while: What are you listening to right now? - General Discussion - Basschat And also 'cos Cannock is up the road from where I grew up ๐

Very useful to get this balanced perspective / alternative view from @andruca

None of the Zoom models will provide a sequence/arpeggiator with a tap tempo function but they do cover a lot of other ground and they're all very good value. I've had a couple of MS-60Bs, a B3N and a B1-4X along the way but have finally settled on the B1-4 which is sitting at the heart of my board and I'm enjoying a lot (plus a spare for use as a portable headphone amp & preamp). I posted a fairly detailed comparison of the MS-60B and B1-4 at the start of this thread, if it's of any interest.
-
Hah! I knew you would pick up on that, hence my including the word "otherwise" ๐ You can have the same CPU but with different amounts of memory, right? I mean, mobile phones do that all the time. We need to bring in the cavalry here! @jimfist - do you have any insight / gossip on whether the same CPU with same DSP is in both the B3n and B1-4?
