  1. For the record, the punch of the P pups on this BB425 pretty much floors any other bass neck pup I've played before or since. I remember Tom's grin very vividly when we met up to do a bass swap and he played it for the first time
  2. @Cuzzie fair riposte, buddy. I find myself a little concerned about your digestive tract, however.
  3. Yeah - fair point, I should have more correctly said that it's the electronics that Berg use as 'standard'. Not sure I entirely agree about the second point. There are a lot of great basses out there with dedicated followings ranging from the more marmite ones (Rick, Warwick) to the very widely admired (Fender P). I accept that electronics can be swapped out. But I've shared my views on this: on a >£1k bass I shouldn't expect to have to be thinking about spending another up to £500 to replace pups and / or EQ. In my case it's not something I need to give second thought to on my Yammys and Ibbys SR Pemiums - they just work for me (and, for sure, they're not going to be for everyone) straight 'out the box'. I would have thought that Holger Stonjek might have seen enough threads like this one to have taken the feedback on board? The quality of his finish is really very good. If he produced an 'out of the box' bass with electronics to match, he would have a killer product and I, for one, certainly would be very open to returning to the fold.
  4. Ah, my old bass, which I really regretted moving on!! So much so, in fact, that I've gone and got another BB425 to replace it... GLWTS - whoever buys this will be in for a treat.
  5. @HazBeen that looks lush! (And my Keeley looks happier on your board, where it will be used properly, than it ever did on mine!) But I'm now very intrigued by the Goliath. I'd love to hear some sound samples.
  6. Does seem to be a lot of divided opinion amongst folk who have owned Bergs, but I'm sure that's also true for many basses! The Berg 'marmite' is a very consistent one though, it seems to me. Boils down to: Finish - lovely. Electronics - can be meh.
  7. That looks really good! Have RCF just gone and cloned Behringer (and are looking to charge us double for the privelege)? 😄 😄
  8. Cheers Jack for the thought. But if you A/B the Behringer 1002FX against the Soundcraft 5, the Soundcraft 'wins' on the 2 XLR outputs, but I think an unbiased person would conclude it pretty much loses on everything else, not least significantly on price.
  9. Please don't tell the cutting edge technology boys that a knife on a chopping board is still just as sharp 😂
  10. Just had band mates messaging me asking why don't I just use the bigger one? Ok let's see, I have bass amp plus bass, PA and cables and lights to load and unload for every gig... Youngsters, sometimes don't quite realise they have been born, eh?! 😂😂 PS well at least the drummer has now messaged back to say he understands...
  11. The Behringer arrived today. In terms of delivering a portable solution for small band set ups, I couldn't be happier! The A&H 14FX, for bigger line ups, sitting alongside, to demonstrate just what a compact mixer the Behringer is.
  12. Neck through BBs The above exchange on the 1100 got me thinking...the neck through Yamaha BBs that I'm aware of are: 1200 / 1200S (4 string only) 1300 (4 string only) - was there an S (active) version of this? 2000 (4 string only) - was there an S (active) version of this? 3000 / 3000A (4 string only) 5000 / 5000A (5 string only) NE2 (5 string, some 6s?) - only NT currently still in production (the NE1 was a bolt on I believe). What am I missing? Pics please!
  13. Still doesn't stop it having citrus aspirations though 😂 (It's even the right colour!)
  14. Don't disagree with your sentiment, but I thought the BB1100 and BB1100S were bolt-on rather than through-neck?
  15. Need to get some of our cab experts involved to point you in the right direction on this. My 'easy' solution would be to take it to a store and A/B it against a new MB 121H cab and see how it sounds in comparison. Obviously that's gonna depend on how close you are to a store with one in stock.
  16. Hmmm...if that's the case worth checking whether the speaker is 100%? That doesn't sound right to me - I used a MB 12" cab as part of my AC 121 Lite combo for 4 years and it did a sterling job in rehearsals and gigs.
  17. The Markbass 12" cabs have a reputation for rolling off the high end to give a 'warmer' (if you like it) or alternatively described as 'muddier' sound (by those who don't like it!). They're certainly not as crisp as either BF or Vanderkley cabs and from what you're saying not as crisp as the MB 210s. In addition to cutting the bass a touch, it's also worth boosting the treble around the 3 kHz to 5 kHz range to counter the high end roll off. Unfortunately the EQ on the LM3 has a big gap between the high mids (800 Hz) and treble (10 kHz) so you will likely need a separate EQ pedal, but one of the cheaper Zoom multifx eg the MS-60B should cover this off for you (and do a lot more besides!).
  18. I think based on prices that BB1100s have gone for in the UK recently, that does seem about right in terms of pricing although, as you say, the set up of the replacement bridge leaves a bit of a question-mark. But @AndyTravis is better placed than me to comment on that as he's had plenty of BB repair and refurbish experience.
  19. In case anyone is wanting to know the difference between 414s and 424s the answer to that Q is in AT's post of April 4th on the Big Yammy thread.
  20. It's also finished in the darned 'right' colour. But having just bought a couple of Yammys I'd best let Andy not fall too far behind... 😁 GLWTS
  21. dB you didn't get the memo, did you?! THIS is the thread for any balanced / non-eulogising** comments about Bergs, please! Besides... So if you want to post comments like: ...then this is clearly the place for it! 😁 **another good word, but not as good as otiose
  22. @Meypelnek excellent, well balanced, post! Thank you! My limited experience (4 years with just one Berg which was a TM4) is pretty much word for word what you've set out in your post - it's almost like you had been playing my bass! Your points about the reverse split coil on the VM5 (or VT5) and Häussels plus fine workmanship of the Bergs (I've never hesitated to praise the quality of the way my Berg had been put together) are ones that chime with me as being good pointers for anyone looking for a quality P/J.
  23. You've definitely missed your calling as either an innovative pedal housing designer and now budding digital / analogue switching expert with a possible sideline membership of the thought police... 😄 Other than checking out @krispn's tip-off about the Grand Dark, which does sound interesting I must say, I'd best leave you Berg fanboys to gush away, free from any contrarian think. I'm sure I won't be missed...
  24. This is definitely the thread to get the most 'likes' for your bass pics! 😁 But then we all know quality when we see it!
