Thanks! 0.5M XLR to TRS will be returned and a 1.0M XLR to TS on its way to replace. I think, fingers crossed I'm just about there and the high-pitched hum plus volume loss issues will all now be sorted - much to my relief as I recommended this unit to our singer, off the back of this thread. Did you not find the pack of goodies in the box (it's within the cardboard at the bottom)? If so, you're in the same boat as our singer who was surprised when I pointed them out, but all your kind input will have been repaid, haha!

Hi Woody follow on question if I may: So I initially checked your point about getting rid of the interference / earthing high pitched hum by using one of my PA cables with the suppled TS adaptor using my Zoom B1-4 as a headphone amp (as per the above pic). I've since got a 0.5M XLR to TRS for use with the monitor-out (and marked with the headphone symbol) from my Zoom L8 mixer but found that fully inserted there was a considerable loss of volume, whereas pulled out a notch so it was effectively being a TS rather than a TRS 1/4", the volume was restored. I then used the supplied Xvive U4 jack, which as you know is TS, into the monitor out and volume wise it was fine (obviously still had the high pitched hum). However fully inserting a normal set of headphones with a 1/4" TRS adaptor works great into the Zoom L8 monitor out with no volume loss, and when they were partially pulled out there was a volume drop plus it went from being stereo to mono output into one ear only. Now because the Xvive U4s are "purely mono" whereas a TRS jack is stereo, even though I'm going into a stereo headphone out socket from the Zoom L8 mixer, it seems that what I need is an XLR to TS adaptor not an XLR to TRS adaptor, do you agree?

I guess the mA halving as the voltage doubles follows from what we were discussing earlier. But, yes, it would be helpful for them to spell out the right current with each voltage.
-
That does have an 18V power supply with it - is that not convenient? I guess you're using one PSU for your whole board? PS Recommend checking out the Harley Benton IsoPro PSUs - fantastic value and pretty slimline to fit under most pedal boards, with provided switch options for 9V/12/18V on a couple of the outputs.
-
I think this is equivalent to a batteries in series vs in parallel question. So my understanding is that doing that will double voltage, but your mah will stay at 250mah.

But only 20 fingers and toes, so how does that work? 😅

@mrtcat - have been thinking your comments through and discussing with my band, in particular about rejecting suggestions on personal preference. I guess where I'm coming from is that there's gotta be enough cheesy floor filler songs out there which audiences love, so that the band isn't forced to play particular songs week in week out if one or more of the band members can't stand them? Particularly ones which have been done to death e.g. Wonderwall, Sweet Home Alabama etc. Playing live music has gotta be fun, if it becomes a chore then that's a real shame. Had a bit of banter with a pro bass-player last night who's just helped me to put the debate over one band song we're currently not doing to bed: you don't need to play this song to be doing 60+ function gigs a year!

Motu M4 audio interface which was acquired new last year, but has been unused since and I've now got a desk which I can use for audio interface purposes. Best price I can currently find online is £225, so I'm listing this at £180 plus P&P to hopefully provide someone with a bit of a discount for an essentially new item.

Partly. We thought it would be nice for the band to at least kick off with the same IEMs so we had a similar experience as we were finding our feet - as you know the ZS 10 Pros get a lot of love on BC and no way were the rest of the band up for spending Shure 535 money!

Thanks fella and the same to you! I've started getting up to speed on the L8 - we used it successfully with our RCF 912As on Sat night. In answer to your Qs: - The on-board FX seems straightforward enough to use - just for reverb for the singers currently. I like the fact that it auto-stores the EQ setting used for each channel and that it has a low cut (i.e. HPF) which I'm just using for bass. - Channels 7 and 8 are both stereo, but we've currently not made use of them. The added bonus is that the L8 and its larger siblings are very much also aimed at being an audio interface, so it looks like I'll be able to move my (I'll have to confess as still yet unused!) Motu M4 on, and recoup some of cash on the L8, which was already extremely good value to start with.

Cheers Dave - not particularly cheap, which is surprising for Xvive as they tend to be pitched at the value end, and just two drivers? I've gone with flow and picked up a set up ZS10 Pros for myself and rest of the band - managed to get them at £25 a set via one of the links posted on the main IEM thread, which seemed amazing value.
-
Well that's even better to know! Does seem that users of the Xvive U4 on this thread are generally a pretty happy bunch!
-
Just to clarify when you say "great fan" that's of short cables acting as a high frequency filter?
-
That seems to have done the trick, thanks Woody. Our singer will be pleased and I'm obviously relieved as she bought it off the back my recommendation based on our discussions on this thread, haha! So I presume that's actually an interference hum rather than an earthing issue?
-
@Woodinblack - grateful if I can pick your brains as I suspect you'll know the answer to this one! Singer has just picked up a Xvive U4 but has been getting a high pitch background buzz. I've just checked with some of my kit and I'm getting exactly the same, whatever setting or channel its on. It substantially disappears if I grip the connector at the 1/4 end (as per the pic), so it seems to be some sort of earthing issue? Is this something you've encountered and / or is there an obvious fix? If it's not something you've experienced with either of your two units, I'm guessing it could just be a faulty unit?

Compact budget PA set-up to put bass through (without back-line).
Al Krow replied to Al Krow's topic in PA set up and use
Taken me a while to use the 912As I bought towards the end of last year, in anger. I've been cheekily making use of other band members' PAs to save me having to lug the load...but they had their first outing last night at a busy decent sized pub and it was definitely the best PA set up I've had with any of the bands I've been in (not on a par with @bassfan's but there's a lot more to their set up in terms of amount of kit involved). Handled 5 string bass really well and good sound upfront. Not going to help with me trying to get away with not using these on future gigs though! -
Still loving my Mesa M6. Will tick all the criteria in your OP.
-
Nice! How are you liking it? Did your foam strap sort out the neck dive on this - if so, that's a great result.
-
The other camera is a Sony a6300. It's got a very decent APS-C chip which means that for low light recording (e.g. in pubs) it knocks the socks off camera phones (maybe not the latest Apple kit?). That's really useful to know about not being able to adjust camera phone's video audio levels - inevitably going to get some distortion as is audible in the first part of the OP clip.
-
Well that's good advice! I think the ability to set internal mic volumes on a decent camera is a huge plus to avoid distortion. I don't think (android) camera phones allow you to do this manually but I think it can done via an app - anyone with experience please shout! Let me know what you think.
-
Yes indeed for recording gigs. The cameras are the ones used in the clip in the OP.
-
That's a very good point John, but does require the band to fully mic'd and any backline effectively be reduced to stage monitoring? The drums may present a particular challenge but I guess you could get away with an ambient overhead mic for the drums? Obviously if you're recording other bands, then you don't have the same ability to get the output from the desk.
-
They can be a bit £spendy - does the improvement in sound make it worth it? Sound test comparison - camera phone vs camera mic vs external mic (decent pair of headphones recommended)
