Filling out the sound with no rhythm guitar
Al Krow replied to BillyBass's topic in General Discussion
A few of you have mentioned the Fishman Fission Powerchord pedal which I owned a few years back, but was never too enamoured with it. I've just come across the EHX Pog 3, which came out in Aug last year and blows the Fishman (and, as far as I can tell, pretty much all the competition in the octave up space) out of the water. It's a seriously expensive pedal, but I can't find another polyphonic pitch shifter that comes close to it in terms of capability and tight tracking, and I suspect only a high-end multifx would get near it for pitch shift and tracking? Will also be cheaper and easier to master than an 8 string bass - take my word for it! 😅 -

That is a really useful angle to explore with our drummer! Any live clips of this in action from you guys gratefully received! -
Electro-Harmonix POG3 Bass Showcase with Nate Navarro In the meantime, I'll leave this on here from Nate. It seems to me this is in a league above any/all the competition in octave-up tracking? Is that fair? @Quatschmacher can the Panda FIv4 get something close to this on pitch shift capability and tight tracking? If so, I guess that gives another option.

That is high praise - sounds like you and Chris both had a real treat when you heard him! -

Filling out the sound with no rhythm guitar
Al Krow replied to BillyBass's topic in General Discussion
For sure agree with many of the examples you've given @peteb, and Led Zepp were the ultimate power trio of instruments plus vox! But, as others have rightly said earlier in the thread, the point here is with bands and tunes where they themselves had more than one guitarist or a keys player and filled out the sound during guitar solos and didn't leave it to the bassplayer doing what he or she was previously doing. In those circumstances, I think we can potentially tastefully add something 'more', or at least give it some thought rather than dismiss the point as being always wrong? -
Filling out the sound with no rhythm guitar

Nah, disagree Chris. You can sound decently full as a line up during the verse/chorus quite easily. On the Hotel California example, which I think is a good one, you have rhythm guitar filling the sonic space plus vox in the verse/chorus. On the solo the only thing you have underneath the guitar with a three instrument set up is the bass, as the vox also drops out. The Eagles had two rhythm guitars filling the space during the solo. If you don't change things up, it's going to sound thin? -

Coming to think about it, a really good example of when a song can sound really thin when the guitarist switches from rhythm to solo with a three piece instrument outfit (guitar, bass and drums) is Eagles - Hotel California. Obviously the Eagles had a BIG line up in terms of guitars. How fill the gap on the iconic guitar solo at the end? -

The devil or refrigerator cabs? Are the terms interchangeable? -

Read the thread from start to finish and some excellent posts, thanks guys! Picking up on 2 to 3 octave gap point. Thinking that would be an ideal time to kick in a pedal that can add an octave and possibly also a 5th above for some of the songs to fill out the space? Maybe an interesting one to create a patch on a decent multifx or check out some dedicated pedals that can do this well, if folk have recommendations for low glitch / low latency / tight tracking options? And I guess, there's always the option to add "power" chords (root, 5th, octave) ourselves without a pedal. -
Well said. You could equally say that Bach was formulaic. As well as creating some of the finest music ever written.

Not a fan of Flea?

For completeness, I think I've spotted one additional feature in the CQ18T vs CQ12T over and above the couple I listed above - the 18T has two independent headphone outs vs one on the 12T. Not sure that's going to particularly benefit me, but may be of importance to some eg when using the desk as an audio interface for multi track recording?

You and me both John! You prefer the B1-4 over the B2-4 & B6 for live work?! VERY reassuring to hear, but please spill the beans as to why?

We just know that's going to happen. But hopefully not from me this time around!

Decisions re. new PA for 4 piece band. 10 / 12 / 15 tops +/- Sub
Al Krow replied to warwickhunt's topic in PA set up and use
Have to disagree on that one! Having gigged both extensively over many years, the 912As were a definite step up over the 310As! Combine the 2 x 10" with a sub, as @Jack has done and I suspect you've got quite different, meatier, animal though! -
Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2024?
Al Krow replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Having decided on my fav purchase for last year, I've now decided on my wooden spoon fwiw: Zoom MS 60B+ I did have high hopes for the MS-60B+, having got its predecessor back in 2013 when it first came out and subsequently been a huge fan of the Zoom B1-4 since. But its limitations in terms of lack of PC editing and inability to display name of the patch you are on other than very temporarily, make it much less usable both for patch editing and live use. Shame - I feel those are both things that Zoom could easily fix and, if they do, I'll have another look at the 60B+ down the line. -
You and I seem to have landed on the exact same conclusion re. the Zoom MS60B+ Shame. Fortunately a GT 1000 Core did show up, as you know! 😃

They're a step up from my Creative T40s for sure. 5 string bass is ok through them, but not sure they handle the low end that well . The 5" Ayras are good enough for quieter home practice, but definitely still prefer to have one of my RCF 912As set up for putting bass through. Decided to make use of the Anderton 30 day exchange and get the bigger 6.5" versions instead - will be arriving at the end of this week.

You're equally to blame...I mean those RCF Arya Pro 5s. I didn't even see them coming! I'm not going to help you here by saying that the A&H CQ18T got "labelled" by my mate (and fellow bassplayer/BL responsible for the sound, so we have nothing to talk about when we meet up, haha) as being a desk that does everything he wanted his to do...and ended up getting it for himself for Xmas! Anyway back to silent stages which we seem to somehow have gone from, to ear splitting stages! 😅

Iconic bass-lines for aspiring bass players!
Al Krow replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Ooooh I do like a bit of Stone Roses! They could have been massive (as opposed to merely huge), right?! Well there seems to be a LOT of demand for Motown bands right now, so you may just have to come out of retirement if you end up learning a new song a week (btw what a great aim!) PS I also got that book a while back but, like you, have not made the most of it!
