Speaking of on-stage monitors @steve-norris an active PA monitor could actually be a very good value solution, for what you're after, particularly if you're pairing with a pre-amp pedal or a even a cheap multifx. like the Zoom B1-4, which has multiple pre-amp sims available. E.g. an Alto TS 308 will give you all the power you need and comes in below £250.

I had one a few years back. Tone was nothing to write home about (you're not going to get a great speaker at that price point) and it definitely needed an extension cab at band rehearsals but overall pretty good for the money and "fortunately" the one on here has sold otherwise I'd be tempted to get it back as a portable on-stage monitor.

Btw, seriously nice board, socks, ahh both... 😁

Plus these 3 new modes compared to the SY-1: dual - combines lead & pad sweep noise Particularly interested in what these 3 new modes deliver. @Woodinblack - for completeness, I should add there also appears to be an additional (and important) resonance parameter on the SY-200 which can be tweaked (and stored) in addition to the existing tone / depth which are already available on the SY-1; plus MIDI which was a particular draw for @0175westwood29

Music becoming a universal language without borders? Now there's a thought...

Amazing post - thanks Russ! Just one factual point to correct: "The Shures are still a single driver in the lows." That's certainly true of the 215 / 315. However the 535 has a triple driver with twin mid/bass drivers and a dedicated tweeter, which I guess is why Rik considered them to be quite a step up from the 215/315.

Promises, promises 😁

If you could organise Deutchexit before you sell, that would be very helpful 😁

Ah fair enough forgot Andy is in Manchester. Well in that case, he doesn't necessarily need to get by Friday - Plan B is I've got a daughter up at uni up there and I'm sure we can coordinate something. So a couple of options for Andy. But he may, of course, do the sensible thing and pass on this one...
-
Well that's very much my (and @Reggaebass's!) manor, so I could collect on the way to Colchester Friday evening.
-
Andy if you really want this - shout and I could potentially collect for you (provided it's not in deepest darkest S London which can be a 3 hour round trip!!) and then drop off with @bassfan on Friday night (I'm going to see his band play and get a decent burger at the same time...). I think you and he are then not too far apart?

Russ - this makes very good sense, particularly if you're starting from scratch. But if you've already got a Shure 215 or 315, then that's a "sunk cost". The next decision would be to step up to a 535 (£179 whilst stocks last, they've been discontinued) or head up to a UE6 at £600+ Out of interest have you tried the 535s? I was encouraged by @Rik (ESA)'s comments that the 535s were "excellent for listening to music if you get the seal just right." And I'm aware of a couple of other BC'ers using them and finding them very decent. Obviously he rates the UE6 as being a further big step up.

Phil - been catching up on this thread and playing catch up more generally as you will have spotted from the FRFR thread! As you rightly advised on there, Step 1 is about getting a decent digital mixer and I suspect we're about to follow you down the RCF M18 path. My takeaway from this thread is that compared to the "staple" brand of the Behringer XR18, the M18 has: a less steep learning curve / more "plug and play"; app a little less glitchy on the RCF than the Behringer; (much) better router (can fix this by plugging an external router for the Behringer); can control via your phone (as you can the Behringer I assume?) The key benefits of the Behringer XR18: (much) better multi-track recording unit; steeper learning but more options once you've got to grips with it; better if you're going to fully mic-up the drum kit. I only really had one further question about the RCF M18, but I think you've answered it when you said: "The phone app for mixing your own monitor mix is faultless and it's all just so easy". I take that to mean each band member (up to 6) can have their own tailored mix so the singers can boost the vocals and bass players can give more weight to the backline and drums etc.?

Cheers Rik, just the small matter of how much the UE6s are! £615 - and that's the base case without any optional extras. But if they really are in a different league, then I guess I'll just need to sell a spare bass that's not getting used too much 😄 In the meantime, interesting / useful that you noticed a very significant step up from the Shure 215s --> 535s. I guess a further question for @dave_bass5 is how good are the MEE's at ear protection against ambient noise? The Shures apparently reduce ambient noise by 37dB which provides very welcome ear protection and is pretty much what I've been using my 315s for up till now.

MEE audio - MX3 Pro Hybrid Triple-Driver - these, right Dave? (I was thrown by your reference to MME, which I assume is a typo?)

Cheers Russ for taking the time to pen those responses and detailed rebuttal of that web article - all very helpful and much appreciated!

@ped in which case the Macrodose won't be for you either, as it also has no space for a battery (and is also at eye watering 3Leaf prices, although this one kinda feels better value given what it's offering); all the free space has been taken up by its crazy wonderful circuitry. Maybe we need to club together and get you a little pedalboard and PSU for Chris - t - mas? 😁

Came across the following article which looks useful: Best In Ear Monitors For Bass Players - How To Maximize Using In Ear Monitors (ericsardinas.com) Shure IEMs seem to get a good rep - and the entry level 215 comes highly recommended on that review. I've got the slightly higher model 315 but a mate of mine has recommended getting the 535 which has 3 drivers rather than just the one in the 315/215s. The 535s have recently been discontinued and are currently on end of line sale, so may not be available for too much longer. Has anyone had experience of either the 315 or 215 and also the 535? If so, did you notice much of a difference between the 535 and the more budget models?

We do need to get your DLX review posted on here! 😎

Looks phenomenonally well featured from the write ups. Analogue pedal with digital controls is getting into Chase Bliss territory and not surprisingly this has a hefty price tag albeit not straying into CB 'ultra-premium' pricing. It will be around £300 in the UK (VAT and Customs paid). However that's not particularly more than 3Leaf gear, so colour me interested. Not that this needs any more colour... It's been built with collaboration from the Sub Decay guys and has been compared to their Prometheus DLX Deluxe but with the addition of a volume and a mix knob, so I guess that would be a good place to start to get an idea of what it would sound like on bass until we get a few dedicated bass reviews.

I guess you could always send Alan and Jon a pic and ask them to come up with something similar: (Cue gratuitous pic ) 😁 But more seriously - I've been massively tempted by the quality and reputation of both Alan and Jon's basses and some of their designs are jaw-droppingly good. I suspect, whether you get a Spector, Sei, GB Bass, Shuker or ACG, you're in for an absolute treat!
-
The higher-end EMGs on the Euro series are very good IMO and would still be my first choice on that bass. But you're not limited to EMGs these days, if you fancy something else, with Spector offering some quality alternatives.
-
Comes pretty close to a Spector Euro 5LX. Fabulous basses! Apologies, that is a very off topic observation, but I couldn't help but notice the similarities!

That's super useful to hear, thanks Simon. Saved me getting one to A/B with my Proton Mk4, which lives to fight another day...although I must say @Quatschmacher's latest discovery of the GFI Rossie looks very interesting. I'm guessing that GFI aren't any bigger than Source Audio, just based on my personal brand recognition, but they've included a visual display, which SA pedals lack but would make a big improvement IMO to their usability as a standalone pedal - apparently SA will be addressing at some point in the future...
