Definitely go for a fixed bridge 6. I used a D-Tuna on a Floyd-loaded guitar and it never worked particularly well, and retuning a floating bridge guitar multiple times in a set unless you have a method of locking it solid (Tremol-no is a great gadget) is a non-starter. If you go to a 7 string guitar to avoid retuning he'd need to learn the songs with completely different finger positions. It'll completely muck up his chords so probably a non-starter as well. As for suggestions for an instrument, maybe a Fender/Squire Tele with humbuckers, or even a PRS SE. I was very impressed with the last couple of Squire Teles that I tried, and the PRS SEs are arguably the best built guitars at a budget and are generally reasonably priced used.

Guitarist obsessed with scooped tone is driving me crazy
hairychris replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
Having spent a lot of time in 2 guitar bands as a guitarist, I always found the guitars sit better with one more mid-focused, and the other slightly scooped. Note: slightly, as in just for emphasis, and preferably following the amp's strengths (Marshall JCM800 and Mesa Dual Rectifier is a fantastic combination, for example). Admittedly I got to know that through a lot of trial and even more error. However.... sounds like this isn't what's happening here! You and the other guitarist really need to have a word and say that it'll sound like dogpoo live, and any recording engineer worth his/her salt would make those changes to the amp anyway before tracking. Ah well. -
I've never really found a keyboard forum I love, from what I gather there are a LOT of bad keys players out there though so good luck with your search!
I'm absolutely god-awful. I'm still a guitar player at heart, then a basserer, finally lagging a long way behind that is keys!

As a metalhead humbuckers are pretty much a given... For the last band I played guitar in my personal loadout was 7 string guitars loaded with Bareknuckle Warpigs (high output AlNiCo passives) into a Diezel. Quite a lot of grind on tap there, I can recommend it if you're that way inclined. I do like the Telecaster, though. I'm a recent convert to them, and I'd also like to try something out with P90s as I've heard some filthy tones from guitars equipped with those.

What bugs me is people who use pedals but don't have them on a board. It's so much faster and simpler to set up & break down. For my band I currently run a tuner, compressor (always on) then into a line selector to give me some clean signal and a wet loop with a RAT clone (used in 1 song so far), Bass Muff (used a lot), Twin Earth Deluxe fuzz (used for OTT part in 1 song) and a delay (for texture in a couple of places). I could get away without it but I'd have less fun! I'd like a filter, though...

Lots of ticket stubs but never really went into the whole signing thing...

I've got a shirt from Bad Brains 1989 tour that is still wearable.
There was a local band who opened as part of a Raging Speedhorn/Amen double header. Their name has long since dropped out of my memory; their performance, unfortunately, hasn't. The singer's idea of performing was literally to insert the head of the SM58 into his gob and roar into it, while the band appeared to play 4 different songs behind him. For 30 minutes. To his credit, his singing was responsible for the strangest request from a singer to the sound guy when Raging Speedhorn took the stage - "Can I get a new mic up here? This one just smells of puke". Ah...the look on the soundguy's face...
Raging Speedhorn. Horrible dogsh*te every time that I've seen them (first time was their first tour as support for Iron Monkey, last time was at Damnation last year)! There was a time when they seemed to be everywhere. I went to 3 or 4 shows on the tour when they had Clutch supporting and left before they even hit the stage as headliners. The one time I saw them do something fun was when 3 of them played a set of covers in the basement of a pub at an afterparty. They did great versions of Black Sabbath & similar. Just seems to be one of those bands that has the ingredients of something that I should like but I really don't. End rant, haha.

Walked out of Metallica at Monsters of Rock in 95. They did a medley of old stuff which really didn't go down well with myself & the folks that I was with! Amen having to follow Tool at Ozzfest 2001 was pretty funny.
GET OUT!!
Bahahaha. No-one can knock the blatant power of low end you can get out of a Moog though!

As I came over to bass after 20+ years on guitar I can't really say anything! Then again I've gone to the even darker side & taken up keyboards this year.

In my gig signal chain a TU-3. I also have a Snark clip-on in my gigbag. Others? 3x D'Addario clip-ons, TU-2 on guitar pedalboard, tuner on Boss BR600, tuner VST in DAW.
when I watch something like this I realise why Punk Rock was invented
Haha, yep. Complex is all good but not really into it for it's own sake.

Sounds like SOP for prog. Or doom metal.

On guitar I rarely dropped picks, but always made sure that I had a couple on my pedalboard just in case. For bass I use these huge 5mm thick things. Played with just the one for a while, but have recently bought a few spares.

Gimmick or Innovation (or just the best bass for metal!?)
hairychris replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in General Discussion
It says it is "...loaded with 100 dynamic Kaoss effects..." What is the difference between digital modulation and an fx unit? I don't get it.
I phrased things badly! Yes, they are an fx unit, but they are very performance-oriented because of the touchpad control surface (unlike your normal stomp/rack unit) allowing for real-time control of sampling, pitch shifting, modulation, etc. Used well they're very interesting tools. A friend of mine plays electronica and the full-fat version of the device is a huge part of his live performances. Not entirely sure why I'd want to stick one on the bass, though. It's still pretty much completely unsuitable for most genres of metal! -
Aguilar Tonehammer 500 vs Little Mark iii (or any other suggestions?)
hairychris replied to knoxy26's topic in Amps and Cabs
I run a GK MB800 into a Gen 2 BF Compact. Amp is like the 500, except that it has a preamp circuit built a bit closer to that of the larger heads. Using middling gain and EQing with a slight bump on the low mids it's fairly pristine as opposed to warm, takes pedals well, 2nd channel is quite nice (although I haven't been using it), decent DI and is terrifyingly* loud. 500w at 8 ohms into a 1x15 that can take that power is quite a weapon, especially as the whole rig can be lifted with one finger. * As someone who's into their metal, sludge, doom, etc I don't say that lightly! -
Tinnitus & lack of sensitivity in both ears due to the 90s, basically. For rehearsals/gigs/going out/etc I'm currently using Moldex 35db industrial disposables. Yeah, not hi fi, but they do the job!

Yep, have used them fairly regularly. Always a quick service! EDIT: That reminds me. I need to sort through my box'o'strings and see what I'm running out of.

Gimmick or Innovation (or just the best bass for metal!?)
hairychris replied to Jonnyboy Rotten's topic in General Discussion
Not really for metal, to be honest, especially with the lack of a bridge pickup. It's a Kaoss pad, which is essentially digital modulation controllable with a touch pad. It's not really an fx unit in the way that stomp boxes are, it's a performance thing. Matt Bellamy (guitarist for Muse) has one built in to a 6-string of his... -
Poll, how many many basses have you got?
hairychris replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
I voted 2. I have 8 guitars as well! -
That's a pretty cool idea! I just bought a cheap Casio from Amazon, I can always return it if it's too awful!
Good luck! It could very well sound fine. What I don't like about cheap keyboards is the action as they really get built down to a price physically. YMMV, obviously, but I've been ruined by the lovely feel of my Moog!
Off topic I know but there are some great options for cheap analogue synthesis now. I bought a Bass Station 2 when they came out, under £400 and it's an amazing bit of kit. Our guitarist got an Arturia Microbrute recently and again, for the money it's ridiculous what that thing can do. Of course now we've both got the bug and we're eyeing up Moogs and Prophets so it will cost us an arm and a leg in the long run...
Don't even go there. I've recently picked up a 1st gen Access Virus for £280 for a project, but also own a Moog Sub 37 (previously owned a Little Phatty - both are ridiculous), Arturia Microbrute, Waldorf Streichfett and some semi-modular stuff. Ugh. I love analog but damn the Virus is something else... There are a few options for the OP: One is possibly to look at vintage workstations (eg Yamaha SY range), these were serious bits of kit in the 90s, have yery nice keyboard action, and can be had for sub-200. Early 00s I picked up an SY22 to learn on, didn't end up using it and exchanged it for recording time. I know for a fact that it was in solid use by some friends until about 3 years ago when their band folded. Two is for a midi controller + synth module. For 200 you could get a 4 octave keyboard and a module of some type (both used). If wanting to do strings only then I've seen used Streichfetts going for 100. Three is something like the M-Audio venom, in other words entry-level virtual analog. Not tried one, but will sound a lot better than 99% of Argos specials. Four is the Argos special. Try before you buy. YMMV!

Yep, there are Jacksons that range from very cheap (not too much over 100 quid) to very expensive, with a lot in between. Difficult to make a call on it without knowing/seeing more!
