1. Hi chaps/ladies Ive been scouting about for another bass to use as my main bass. Ive used my MIJ Precision for years, and loved it. It still virtually looks new...but is now sold. I wanted to get a USA Fender model to replace it, to use as my main gigging bass. Ive found a J and P at a good price new, its just deciding which work 'best' as a main bass. Use my other basses you say? Oh I will, but not as often. I intend to swap between them every now and then. But, whilst the new Fenders are on a bit of a roll, and theyve finally sorted the problems of QC out (mostly!) I thought why the hell not get one whilst ive got a good quote. Ive sold a fair amount of gear so I can just afford it. Its got to be Olympic White + Tort guard, and rosewood always seems to 'look' better with constant use. I just cannot decide whether to get the Jazz or Precision. I love both tones! Im thinking the Precision might be best for just getting to a gig, plugging in, and having no issues cutting through, even though that Jazz tone is amazing. If I go for P, i'd have two P's, one J, one 5 string J when it turns up, and 2 Stingrays. Overkill? Yes, but you only live once. A lot cheaper than buying a high end car and watching it depreciate really quickly! In my situation, which would you go for? The P or the J? I cant see a downfall with either of them. They BOTH work well for me. (I did consider other basses, but after losing money experimenting with other types of basses, and Fender Deluxe / P+J Fenders, I want to stick with what I like and I know works!)
 2.
I got back into gigging this year so missed the introduction of lightweight gear, when I went to buy a new rig the shop suggested mark bass gear. I was'nt ready for it, and thought, because I now am only playing covers in pubs etc, I would'nt need a decent rig, so I brought an ashdown mag setup which after 1 gig I was unhappy with so I traded it for a mark bass head I then borrowed a Zoot 212 lightweight Cab, and was not happy with that either, it just lacked something Under pressure to continue to gig, I brought 2 orange cabs, which I knew would be fantastic, but they are heavy The 410 stays at practice room and 115 goes most other places Both cabs together are overkill volume wise, but they do together produce an amazing tone and punch that sits well from all angles (I lent it to another band one night and was very impressed when wondering around the venue) So I guess I really need a barefaced cab based on what I have read here, happy to be talked into one, but it would have to sound as good as the heavy gear i currently have I may lose a bit of cash on this journey, but hope soon I will have a rig that I will be very pleased with and will see me through latter life!
Im glad you like the Orange cabs. If you feed them with a tube amp, or something with a quality tube-pre, you will love them even more. I have to say, ive tried lighter cabs, and Ive liked them. But, the weight/size difference wasnt enough for me, unless you are talking about the larger cabinets, like a 4x10. The Orange 4x10 is sooo heavy, but that 1x15 isnt that bad (65lbs), and its quite 'compact' compared to others ive used. The size is a massive part of what bugs me with cabinets, not so much the weight. I will end up with a lightweight setup in time, but Ill also be keeping my traditional cabinets.
 3. Luckily I should be based down south for the next one. No idea how Ill get some of my gear there, but plenty of time to arrange that
 4.
Yes it will. Anyone who buys one won't regret it.
Thanks I was originally looking at cheaper models, but whats £130 when its protecting £1000 instruments!
 5. I was actually thinking this today. Ive just sold my MIJ 62 Reissue P and the white paint on that still looks great after 14 years! Im going to get a new American Series Precision or Jazz to have as my main live/gigging bass, and I wanted to know which would 'last' the best and age well, but mine is more about colours. After a few PMs, it seems white is a good colour, plus it looks awesome. Black seems to show every single tiny mark so easier...so im probably steering away from that. Plus, Im all about white or sunburst if Im honest. Anyone want to pitch in? Cheers
 6.
I'd have thought this situation was exactly when you would want a hard case rather than a soft case. I'm in the same situation and it's nice to know that nothing will get damaged if the load shifts, e.g. a heavy combo decides to topple on top of the bass.
We only take 2 Marshall amp heads, and my LM3 in its bag....the drum breakables go on the bottom. Problem is, my hardcases are big. The new Fender cases are very protective, but large!
 7. If I could get a flightcase version fairly cheap I would...perfect combo. I think the Mesa Walkabout is probably more my thing though.
 8.
Still together; http://planetsofold.com/ Caleb doesnt drive his amps too hard that I could always tell. He uses a fulltone fulldrive with an ODB3 for the growly tone.
Cheers dude....just this second found that! Snap! I like it, and im glad they are still around. You can tell they are all mad guitar/bass fanatics.
 9.
yea caught them in mon. when i saw them the back line was MR had 2 marshall jtm 30 watt heads into 4 4x12 IH had a small fender combo OW had svt 2 with one spare and an 8x10 and two lots of blackstar artisan 30 head with a 4x12 VA just had the 1 leslie stack they sounded sweet. i think all i heard of the bass was a di of the TB. boomy if i was playing guitar i'd say no to 200watts.
+1....I had a 60W tune Fender amp and basically unless you were playing super super loud, it was unnecessary. I much prefer lower wattage guitar amps so you get them to their sweet spot easier.
 10. Keep the EQ flat first, and experiment with the two end knobs....VLE and VPF. I always seem to end up leaving the EQ. What bass are you using?
 11. Sunn Now thats something i'd like to own. One of my favourite bands, Cave-In, use a P Bass/Grabber (I think, im not too hot on Gibson basses) with a Sunn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c73UEu-NF_Q...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNPYU36bB28 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=280KmSDIx7I...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rbyvAx1mzY...feature=related Not sure if they still do, (not sure if they are still together!) Some Marshall Bass amps on those live UK vids. Basically, I want to play in a dirty heavy rock band with hardcore influences...lots of bass runs and cranked tubes. Guitaist would not be allowed any of this ESP stuff...
 12.
Damn! PM'ed second!!!!
I would have done the same if I didnt want the new USA Olympic white...damn this pretty bass!!!!
 13. A massive part of the GJ sound is a pure passive P bass, with stainless strings and the mids sucked. I could ALMOST get it with my MIJ and my old Trace head...but it lacked the dirt. Now I have a tube amp I need to re-establish that awesome Glassjaw tone.
 14. Wow...thats a beaut!
 15.
Dont forget our Laklands have stubby head stocks. I find my DJ5 (and 55-01 before) will fit all the cases ive ever had. Thats not to say they will fit everything but they are slightly shorter than some 35" basses.

The Mono's fit my Spector 35" scale 5ers with room to spare.
Thanks guys!
 16. Im hoping to get a Mono case soon, and more Berg in the future.
 17. I know it applies more to their guitar cabinets, but the Orange cabinets are made from 13 ply high density 18mm birch plywood. I know that guitar cab wise, it has a shockingly goods effect, along with the V30s, in giving the guitar so much low end and 'heavyness' /darker tone. Is this an example of fast labour? Even if it is, they are so much better tone wise than every other guitar cabinet ive heard, And Ive heard a LOT. Ive not A/B'd my Orange bass cabs as yet....but they do seem to be really thick and chunky is terms of tone, and they are made from the same wood. Ok, it weighs a fair bit, but sometimes you just have to build it in that way to get that huge sound. Im not talking about anything scientific, all Im talking about is the end result; tone. Tone is more important than any other factor.
 18. Ive tried a few tube guitar amps for bass and it was lacking. It just doesnt sound that sweet.
 19. Will a Mono fit a Lakland Joe Osborn 5 (35 scale) ? If so, then it will fit all of my basses.
 20.
Just spotted this, similar to bass in OP but in shiny new look and half the price! http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/bas...1962reissue.htm
WOW!!!!!
 21. I started back vox years back and now I have no problem. In the future I hope to be able to split the songs between a few main vocalists, one being me. I know I can hold a note or make a lot of noise, so Im happy!
 22. Oh heck, I didnt want to ruin the thread with a 'VS' topic. The customer service Ive got from Orange has been absolutely amazing. Yes, they do produce them in much larger numbers, and yes I agree the Matamp after service sounds great. But, there has to be a reason why I was drawn to the Orange, and that was tone. I never thought I'd go down the Orange route until I inspected the amp, then heard it a a low then high volume. I was sold. Plus, it is one of the most striking amps I have seen. IMO, the Orange + Matamp amps are some of the best tube amps built nowadays. I rate them both much higher than Ampeg; at least they are based in the UK thus much easier to get sorted out. As soon as I bought mine, I realised 2-3 of my favourite bands, including Converge, ETID and Alk Trio all use the AD200b Mk3, and they have awesome tone when Ive seen them live.
 23.
you couldn't be further from the truth! they both started as the same company, but thats about the only resemblance they share nowadays! The circuitry and build quality are miles apart. in regards to dirty though, have you ever cranked a hiwatt chris? if i were you i'd keep an eye out for a roost / vintage hiwatt / soundcity 120 or even nab that simm watts head that keeps appearing on ebay and let me do it up for you ;>
I know they are different inside, and the whole PTP argument, but the sound? On that night, very similar.
 24.
Ive never liked P basses but this thread s giving my gas. I don't no whats the matter with me
No matter what basses a player owns, EVERYONE needs a proper Precision. Something about the sound/look draws me in everytime.
 25.
Cheers Poncho, Ive emailed you
BUMP
