Righty, as it approaches the middle of the month, and thus the all glorious pay day at the end, I think Im going to get one 1x12 and start my modular rig. I really like the tone of my Markbass Little Mark 3, and I want something that is small and easy to move. I need to make some decisions about it! Decision #1 – Go with another Aguilar Setup, to it would be two DB112s eventually. Advantages = I already like the tone, I know what I’m getting, the handles are on the side thus I wont be plonking my LM3 onto a handle and making it sit funny, the Tweed looks great, the price isn’t so bad, covers are very padded, pack a hell of a punch for a small cab, modular. Disadvantages = Not light, I already have Aguilar gear so maybe this is overkill, not as crisp and articulate compared to the Bergs. Decision #2 – Go with a Bergantino AE112 setup, so it would be two AE112s, eventually. Advantages = The glowing reviews, lighter, Bergantino quality, very very articulate crisp and clear, nice and modular. Disadvantages = Handles are on the top, so you need to cut out foam or something to raise your amp, (seems very strange considering the amount you pay) I have seen a few guys lose a lot of money selling them on these very forums, (am I at risk of losing virtually half of what I paid?!) which leads to the other disadvantage which is expense, and in addition with their expense, I might not use them as much as I should through worrying about them getting knocked, etc, does not have the thick bottom end that the Aguilar’s have, nowhere near as many users in the UK, I can buy Geoffs HS410 for less than one of these!!!! In addition, the spray finish looks excellent, but no corners?! I cant see them withstanding a lot. Please don’t think I’m attacking anyone with the disadvantages, I’m just looking at it from my point of view.
Buy a Big One and be done with it
The only problem with the Big One is its size...it looks quite large. Weight isnt an issue with it, but size might be.
I'd add 2 Berg AE2x10's as something to consider long term... that way you have modular for the big gigs, and can downsize to one for smaller gigs. They are on my list to try as they would fit in my car as well.. and 40lbs ea.. I havel looked at 1x15 and 2x12 and they just seem a tad too big...but if I were to have a van that could carry what I wanted..then maybe I would consider bigger cabs.. but since I carry my stuff mostly in 4 lifts max..then that is a hard habit to break and weight becomes key...
Yeah, the 2 AE210s seem like a perfect solution, but WOW....would that be expensive. Far too much....If I was spending that much id expect absolute perfection. It would be much easier than an AE410 though

Itll sound totally different. You might like more you might not. Years ago I was told the Ampeg 8x10 was one of the best cabs ever. I bought one, and it wasnt. Unless it was really loud it was dull.

I have a friend who has the 75 reissue in natural with roswood neck. It looks pretty damn lovely. I used to have a thing for natural basses, but now I only have 1 (Stingray) and that is a stunning natural finish. I also have a USA Telecaster in natural and that looks awesome. I wouldn't get anymore now; I personally really like sunburst and olympic white. If I were you.....hmm....Id go for 3TS...

Aguilar DB212 Bass Cabinets On my ongoing quest for tone, I came across Aguilar. I only tested Aguilar cabs for a little while, and it was the DB112's. Lovely thick bass tone. These cabs made me really like 12 inch speakers Say what you want about the 'sound' of various drivers, but these 12s do sound great. Thick, throaty, and clear. Plenty of ommph! So, after realised I wasn't a huge fan of Ampeg 8x10's, I agreed a trade with Darren at the Bass Merchant. I decided on two DB212s, thus giving me the ability to have a 4x12 stack, but in a more portable form! They are both 8 ohm cabs. The colour was definitely the right choice. Chocolate Thunder looks great. Little touches like the gold seam on the brown grille cloth is great. They look like a work of art. Almost like the are furniture! They are NOT light cabs. They are approx 70lbs, which is not massively heavy, but really needs a two man lift. But, what you get in weight gives that awesome tone. I did not realise, but they come with removable casters! So, pop them in (a little stiff at first so push them in hard) and there you go. 70lbs is no longer an issue, and at no extra cost. Covers - The Aggie padded covers are essential to make sure your cabs stay nice. They are quite expensive, but try and work out a deal if you buy a fair bit of Aggie gear, I did . They are made by Tuki covers, and then branded with the Aguilar logo. The Tuki covers are renowned for being thick and reliable. This is indeed true! Padded, soft, and essential. Once you have casters on, and you handle the cabs properly with the covers, I can't see many problems. We did have a problem as the covers were the GS212 covers, so Darren quickly got another DB cover out and ordered me another one in addition. So, that's sorted. Soon they will all be complete Sound - With a LM3, I didnt think I was really pushing it like I would be with my Orange AD200b Mk3. Ok....once I turned up (one of the cabs, so 8 ohm, 300W into it) to around just under a third volume....PUNCH! This is why I wanted these cabs...and the LM3 really impressed me. Its thick, articulate, throaty, creamy, chunky bass tone! Definitely less tinny than 10s, and still with the whump of 15s. I tried both cabs together (500W) and I had to turn down to less than a 1/5 of volume....it was soooo loud and bassy....but NOT boomy...a tight fat low end. I must add, the tone was not only good for rock, it had a great articulate and precise sound. My Jazz bass right the way up the neck sounded so clear and crisp, yet would cut through a mix. The P bass was perfect, tone up and it cuts through and has so much whump! Knock the tone back, big fat thuddy P bass with 12s Horn - Full adjustable. Both cabs have a horn, so I turn one down all the way If I use both. Sweet horn! I only have it on low on one....but its perfect....not harsh....a nice sweet high end. I cannot wait to try the Orange amp through these cabs. Excellent
Oh, did somebody call?
That is stunning. I really like these Alleva's...the only thing competing in my mind is NYC Sadowsky. Anyone know how they compare? Alleva seem a little less common, which is kinda cool.
Totally recommend the 70s Classics. The bass in the pics looks like a Japanese 75 Re Issue with a retro fit Baddass.
Yep looks like the 75 Reissue. My friend has one...but he does not treat it like he should. Its a shame. Lovely bass...quite expensive....lovely growl.

I like it! I also much prefer my bass higher up. I used to have it pretty low...and it was fun....but I played awful sometimes. I find fingerstyle is much better with the bass higher up. Plus...I think its better for posture....or something.
Sadly, not very doom looking shiny modern cabs. Considering covering them in some sort of grill cloth to pretend they are oldschool. The sound is there, check the Caricatures recording I borrowed one for.
I bet the 12s are perfect for getting that sound though. I like a little doom/heavy rock n roll every now and then. Boris are sick.
Suspect JoeGarcia's twin GS412s and Sunn1200S (plus another valve amp when he's between exploding them) might have the edge, 4-5 times the size, and many times the weight though.
Pure doom!

What is it with trying to find a bass that works for me ?
Musicman20 replied to markdavid's topic in Bass Guitars
There is always GAS with me....but now I have the basses I wanted when i was a lot younger. Stingray/Jazz/Precision = perfect selection. But NOW....I want more. Fretless, 5 string?! Oh heck ! -
You can get strings that are for lower tunings...so I think the E is higher tension to withstand some down tuning. I downtune sometimes to D with Fenders....sounds sh*t hot to be honest. Not been any lower... I do find my 12's in my Aguilar cabs LOVE the low D....is sounds crisp and articulate, but tight and punchy with warmth.
Hi everybody, just joined the forum and hoping for some advice. I need to get a lightweight cab, 2 10,max 20 kg approx, and a suitable head. Our local shop are great, but being offshore they can't get a load of gear in just for me to try out and compare. What's the general view on mixing or matching manufacturer for both items? I want to play my fretted and fretless passive Jazz basses, and my 3/4 double with K&K pickup and Fishman preamp, and get a reasonable sound from all three, though I guess there'll be an element of compromise. Any coments or advice please re cabs Markbass Traveller, SWR Golight Junior, Peavey Tour?......other ideas? also re heads, LittleMark II (if still available?), Peavey Tour 450?(our shop deals quite a bit with Peavey and might get me a good deal on their gear, but the Tour 210 cab is on the outer reaches of my manageable weight)....other ideas? Any info/advice would be much appreciated, thanks very much. BassMann
Bass head wise...I love the Little Mark 3....if you can pickup a 2 they are virtually the same. The 3 has some nice upgrades. Excellent bass amps. 2x10 wise....hmm....someone will help you on this. I know Mark Bass do a 2x10 Traveller which is very light...quite expensive though. Plently of other manufacturers around though Epifani, I think, do a 2x10. Markbass also do a combo http://www.markbass.it/products.php?lingua...t=3&vedi=39 I think the Combo has a Little Mark 2 Head in it.
Same here. Ive been playing with a pick since i switched form guitar years ago. Over the last few years ive been trying to get away from the pick as i'd like to have that the finger tone a bit more. I always practice sitting down at home at the PC and i never use a pick. I can play at an ok speed but nowhere near how i can play with a pick. I do find though, maybe because of the speed drop, that i play more rhythmically, and that's a good thing most of the time. Less notes but make them count more. But when i get to the gig its pick most of the time still. I do play a few slow songs without a pcik but i always go back to it. Ive tried having the bass at the same height as i do when sitting but i find that's to high to feel comfortable on my body. My fingers just seem to lock up. Im not giving up but i am finding it very hard to not keep reaching for a pick. I even went to one gig without any picks, just to forage myself to try harder and while i did most of the gig without i ended up borrowing one by the end of the night.
Just use fingers all the time...unless its really quick stuff...then practice it slowly. In about 2 months of fiddling about ive started to nail a pretty quick and strong fingerstyle and it feels really comfortable. I'll keep on going, ill get better My back pickup on my Jazz sounds great with fingers.....mmm....

My P Bass gas has been sorted out. Picked up my new American Series in Sunburst with maple neck...wow. Simply wow! I know the Japanese one I have is pretty good, but this thing blows it away. The maple neck also looks great with the burst I got.

The new American Series Jazz Basses are mindblowing, (2008 onwards). Seriously, I took ages finding the right bass. Gorgeous tone, nice n light, the new necks and fingerboards are amazing, and excellent new cases. Other additions like tuner pegs and high mass bridge make them a good buy. I looked around for ages. I might get a Geddy as well as a gigging bass and use this more for recording and home noodling. Its very very pretty! The Tbass reviews gave me confidence that it would be good buy. Its around £130+ more than a Geddy, but you get the new case, lots of new additions, and colour choices. Geddys are GREAT though. You have to look around for the best prices. Some places charge £950+ for an American Series, but I got mine for a lot less than that. Before 08' I was waiting around and messing about testing a lot of Jazzes, and Im glad I was patient
