1. Yes....the are fantastic basses. I had a good chat with Darren at the Bass Merchant, and I emailed Jimmy @ Coppolo. They both said to just take my time, have a god think, ask questions, try one out where poss. Im planning on making it a 30th birthday type purchase...which is still nearly two years away, so maybe thats too long!
2. I have my heart set on a Coppolo now. its going to be a long way off...but wow. Has to be J Bass style, 5 strings, with plate, 70s pickup spacing, maple neck, block inlays.
3.
I've been doing a lot of research on this. I do a lot of local gigs and get to them on the bus. I had a Markbass CMD 121P which was great but the speaker really let it down IMO. If you A/B it with the internal speaker and then an external, the difference is astounding ! I had an EBS HD350 and two Neo cabs which rarely left my home so I decided to sell this rig and get something lightweight with a great sound. I settled on the Markbass F500 head. I'm still trying cabs but so far I've tried EBS, Schroeder 15+L, Markbass ' yuk ' & Epifani UL112. The Epifani blew everything away by miles. Super tight low end, clear mids and classy highs. All frequencies are clear and level and it only weighs 30Lbs ! Alex from the Gallery also highly recommends the Markbass/Epifani setup. I haven't tried the Compact yet and The Berg's are a little to expensive for me at the moment although I hear great things about them. So basically, check out the Epifani cabs would be my recommendation.
Yeah, Epifani have been an option for quite a while. Ive never had chance to play through one yet which is a shame.
4.
Now that was cruel
HA. I know I still want Geoffs HS410.
5. Y'see....I want this. But my car MOT just rinsed my wallet. Im also not sure I need another mid sized cab. But, I still WANT it. A lot.
6. Just how 'small' is the AE410? It is indeed cheaper than 2 x AE112s! I dont want the bulk...thats what I want to stay away from.
7. Ive been looking at Berg AE series cabs for about a year. I'd love a 410 like yours Simon, but I'd love something modular. The AE series seem to be amazing. Again, ive got a lot more testing to do. 12s just work for me....although thats probably all just a notion thats in my head.
8. I was all set for a Schroeder. As you mentioned, Jorg seems to be getting some flack on recent quality issues. That worries me, being all the way here in the UK. I know they are non-mass produced, to an extent, but I still expect the cabs to be 100% correct. I know he makes some great cabs, but Ive heard quite a few problems with cabs not being straight, poor inputs for the cables, etc etc.
9. Ive been doing a lot of research, testing thing out, etc etc. As much as a lightweight 4x10 is only 65 lbs, thats still not THAT light, and its fairly 'big' for a cab, (although im aware the Berg is pretty compact) So....my mission is to find the ultimate small, lightweight, and amazingly nice sounding cab setup. I have the big loud rock cabs. Yes, one of them at once is enough for small gigs, but as Im getting into styles that arent so heavy, or loud, Id like something quite compact. I will be using a LM3 mainly....keeping it all small and light. My options are: Schroeder 1212L / BMF Bareface Compact Mark Bass (the smaller cabs) Or....go ultra awesome and get two Bergantino AE112s. One at a time. I have been converted into a lover of all things 12. Yes, I know the whole concept of a 12s sound is not so concrete now, but, I just like them. If anyone has any other ideas, like Epifani, etc, let me know. I've got a some saving to do now though, as my car bills were quite high. Plus im buying a small caddy type van soon once this one sells, to help with moving gear. Any ideas are welcome. Im aware this topic has be done to death. My tonal quest in my head keeps saying 'go Berg, and it'll be awesome'.
10. I nearly went with genz but the LM3 bottom end warmth swung it for me. I was also shocked at the size of the Shuttle Max amps....lightweight, but NOT small. Looks like a good bit of kit though.
11. Im going to add my experience of 'weight' recently to this. Even 60lbs is still a bugger to lift. My Orange OBC115 is a tad over 60lbs, and still need a good lift. Its not massively heavy, just not easy! So...even though some cabs state 'lightweight' at 60-70lbs, it is lighter than old school weight, but still not hugely helpful! Something compact make a hell of a difference, with casters. I lifted a 70lbs cab this weekend, and yes its still lighter than say an Ampeg 410E by 25 lbs, its still not practical until you have casters or small size to get your arms round it better. Once I put my casters on my Aguilar DB212s, (they come with them and can be taken out really easily) it made a world of difference.
12. I want one of these. I have decided that I have 1 and 3/4 years left until I am 30, so I am saving as of now for either a Coppolo or a Sadowsky.
13. I think id be deciding for far too long. My problem, well actually, my preference, is simplicity. I like classic, well constructed, average weight, nice vintage body style, 4 or 5 string bass guitars. Basically the rest of the extras, the crazy hardware, the ultra tiny slim neck and body, even some active basses (not all) seems to detract from what I always wanted. Thats probably because when I was younger, all my bass heroes played Jazz/Precision/Stingray. I WOULD...very much like to get a high end Sadowsky. Now that would probably impress me, a hell of a lot. A bass has to look as cool as hell when you spend a lot on it. Vintage, classic body shapes, are indeed where my bass heart lies. The Shuker basses look cool...I have to admit. Im inbetween on this subject until I get a Sadowsky Or....I try an Alleva Coppolo.
14.
Funny though, that they didn't have any trouble shifting records in the past!
No, and thats whats daft about it. They seemed to go much more into bland rock....I saw them on a tiny NME tour and they were awesome. 6 months later or so I saw them at Glasto. But...their initial success was with the whole massive NME surge, and Im guessing they wanted bigger things.
15. Hot Fuss ranks as one of my favourite albums when I was at University. Awesome bass tone. Basically, every time I hear a Jazz Bass, I love it, no matter what amp. Growl!!!! Finally picking mine up on Sunday. Been a long wait, (not the order....just getting the right one at the right price). I think he works his lines extremely well, lending a lot from 80 electros and a tiny bit of funk. Awesome stuff. I havent heard him with a P.....but I bet its the way the album was produced that made the P muddy. Probably said 'back off on the bass, be more commercial, sell more records'. I was never massively into anything they did post-Hot Fuss.
16. So....all in all where can you buy them from? The Bass Gallery, bring one back from USA, secondhand on here perhaps, and now Thomann? Anywhere else?
17. I like this. Wish I was based in Leeds still
18.
I think it's more a case of most bass guitar 15"s having always been pretty cheap. Some of the big heavy expensive old EV and Fane 15"s are very much revered and referred to as 'not sounding like 15"s'. But if the majority of 15"s you hear are the ones in those 'my first combo I can gig with' and then when you buy a good rig you do the standard thing and get a 4x10" plus head, then no wonder a 4x10" seems a much better configuration. Alex
+1. My first set of cabs with amp was a Peavey 1x15 with Black Widow Speaker, and the 410 to match. Awful 15.....it put me off for a long time.
19. Ive got a feeling Stingrays are coming back into 'fashion'...thus prices will rise.
20.
Years and years of playing through anonymous black boxes, whilst Guitards got to use all the pretty stuff. We're just getting our revenge.
Agreed. Im a picky twat now and I love the tradional look of guitar amps. Probably half the reason I went for Aguilar. Yes....I am vain on all levels.
21. As if this is still unsold! It should have gone mega quick! Yet another cab like the HS410 that I thought would get snapped up. Good luck mate...it'll get snapped up soon.
22. I have to admit as time as gone on, in 14 years as a bassist, I can see why people think a 1x15 sounds like it does. It might be based on more of the classic style 1x15s, not the new designs.....but there is a sense that a 4x10 is fast and punchy, whereas a 1x15 sounds nice and chunky and low. This is only with cabs i've tried....saying that my Orange 1x15 has very sweet highs...without a tweeter. Tom Bowlus noticed the same thing. So, I think its a tradtional view from tradtional cabs. New designs may indeed be different
23. I have always been a big of traditional style Fender-look amps....Im a sucker for stuff like that.
