Amazing guitarist composer, Dave Marks on bass?
Not really, If you listen to loads of Megadeth or even some Metallica you will hear loads of that sort of composition in my opinion, nothing wrong with it but it doesn't get me going like it does you, it is all good, horses and courses etc
I don't really dig Megadeth or Metallica, but I've heard enough of both to know that this kid's The cadences are and harmony are very different much less predictable, even though some of the basics are similar. Sorry Pete, I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this mate -
I envy you your discovery
Not knocking his ability but I heard Tony Iommi for the intro then the licks were very much Megadeath note choices IMO, for me it was like watching the Jeff Beck and Tal clips but a bit more metal inspired, sorry Check out 1.30 or about 7.30 for how it is meant to be done
So you don't think his compositional skills and harmony are individual and interesting then? OK I just listened to your recommended Marty Friedman clips, they are solos over minor second riffs, so how are they in any way comparable to what the kid in the op is doing, which is far more compositionally and harmonically complex? -
Yep! I looked at some of the other finalists. He is head and shoulders above the others IMHO. This may be a generational thing though.
He sounds like Eric Johnson. Nice melodies, I really like what he does. Bit bland though, and his other numbers don't match it either. -
I vote in the Basschat Composition Challenge! BTW: I looked for another entrant, and I found some melody this time: https://www.youtube....h?v=_86J6rm8mBU
Before looking, is it Jack Thammarat? -
OK then for my sins I have had a bash at this , https://soundcloud.c...ulu-lurks-remix I quite like it , but then I have had it running through my head burning its signature on my brain superb track, thanks to Nige and the rest if the guys and gals for letting us play with it , I hope you enjoy my ideas
That's f***ing weird. I dig it!
I'm sure I'm in a tiny minority here, but there are few things my life needs less than an 11-minute guitar solo played to an audience of wannabee guitar heroes. That was painfully dull, and the "all systems go" from 4m20s sounded far better when The Who started Baba Yaga with that riff & sound. The bass playing from 7m45s was astonishing technical stuff and I will never be able to get anywhere near that standard. Which is fine, because I would never want to play bass like that. Not having a pop at anyone, especially not toneknob, just saying ... not everyone likes this sort of stuff.
Have to agree. Didn't even get a twitch in the bag listening to that.
It Bites were, and still are, one of my favourite bands. How very dare you suggest that their futuristic prog-pop compexity somehow fell short of the mark!! That's unfair, patronising and reverse-snobbish!! Probably true though.... Is this the kind of thing you mean? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBd401c9ak4
Completely agree with your first sentence and disagree with your second.
Nige i take it youve heard of this chap? unlike Mr Gottardo he is now gigging with big names and being endorsed by big names, and imho all very much deservedly considering he (was) 14 (when he first started coming to media attention) there is very little to fault - great soloing and improv structure - obviously very metheny influenced but that's no bad thing - and very modest and no showboating
Never heard of him mate, will have a listen later, cheers. -
I think you'll find it's actually Peregrine Took. Or possibly Meriadoc Brandybuck. Sad to relate, the fact that this was some years ago means that we can see exactly what happened next. He's (basically) a guitar teacher in Italy, and yes, he does endorsement slots at trade shows. Undeniably an astonishing player, but that's no guarantee of rockstar success.
But he's done a lot of other things too and released two albums on Steve Vai's label http://www.officiald...ottardo.com/bio If you want to make a living as a musician you have to do almost everything offered, there's no money in albums really. Shame he doesn't gig more but to be honest, most people aren't interested in that sort of composition are they, they want shred over a blues progression. -

Watch him blossom into a endorsement virtuoso...

Sorry that last post was a bit harsh... (not enough coffee)
Harsh maybe, but you have to say what you feel. In my opinion, someone with compositional skills at that level will probably need to be writing and trade fairs are not going to satisfy that. What I see from the trade fair clinic hounds is more technical ability and little in the way of interesting music. Anyway, the geezer is fabulous, and although there are obvious Yngwie influences there but the tonality of his composition is very different from Yngwie. But who knows, he might be a pain in the arse to work with and never keep a band together. -
Pretty f***ing stunned by this. Kid seems to have immense compositional ability, and harmony and cadence are in his bloods it seems. Not to mention monstrous chops. I'm sick of this kind of music but once in a while, something rams itself up may arse and won't let go. And is that Dave Marks on bass?
A nice illustration; I'm not sure I'd totally agree with your concluding line, however. It's not the whole rhythm ahead or behind, it's the accents and syncopation that 'push' or 'pull'. If the whole lot is early or late, it's simply out of time, that's all, but if (as in the ride rhythm in the video...) there is a slight holding-back or anticipation of the 'middle' stroke, that's enough to 'pull' or 'push'. Applied to the bass, it would be the 'grace' notes that give this effect, not the principle root/5th fundamental notes. Just my tuppence-worth.
I think that's absolutely bang on.
I'm thinking of buying a tremlo bar for this guitar. Question is... will a standard Fender tremlo fit this, bearing in mind that it's an old Japanese copy? I.e. am I likely to fall foul of metric/imperial problems when it comes to fitting it? Or is the screw size standard on these things?
Should be a standard 5mm mate. My advice is to get a short Gilmour bar, the usual length is too long in my opinion, plenty of Gilmours on ebay.

Tips for learning how to do backing vocals while playing
xilddx replied to BassYerbouti's topic in General Discussion
The way I did/do it was to think of your voice and your bass as a single entity, like a drum set. As long as you are comfortable singing and not worrying about pitching correctly, think of the bass as the kick drum and your voice as the snare or whatever. The bass is creating some sort of rhythmic pattern usually, and you have to think of starting and stopping your vocal notes as part of that rhythm. Depends how complex the parts are, but I discovered the above really helped. It still requires practice of course but I found my progress was quite fast doing the above. -
