This is the message I sent to WOT, if anyone needs more information on this let me know. Hi Mate A couple of things you need to do:- When you send the goods out you need to send some covering documents which state that these are being exported for repair and return. You will also need to keep a copy of the courier waybill as evidence of export. If you need me to mug up some export docs let me know. When the goods are returned, the repairer has to show which item was repaired "at cost" and which one was under warranty, and show a value for the amount of the repairs. This value will be used as the value for duty and vat. If the repairer is paying for the return leg, he must state that the cost of repairs also includes the shipping costs, otherwise you will pay duty and vat on those costs also. You need to instruct the courier company to import the goods under CPC 61 21 05. This should make sense to them, they should be doing this all the time. I have a couple of extracts from the Customs Website to send to you, but I can't attach them to a PM, so if you send me your e-mail address I will scan them over. When you get them all packed up send me the weights and sizes, I will let you know what it should cost, for the outward leg at least. Best of Luck Steve
Hi folks! Ta for that. I've spoken to C&E already - I was just interested in wether anyone here had done it, and how straightforward (or not!) it was. The C&E guy did sound a little unsure so... if you could check, Steve, that would be a great help. Cheers!
Hi WOT This I think is easier than it looks, the problem being that the Customs Notices and forms were devised by consultants and therefore in the main difficult to understand and fairly useless. Also most Customs Officers these days are kids with a load of A Levels who have no clue what they are supposed to be doing (apologies if there are any Officers on the Forum - but this is a personal observation arrived at from years of working with Customs). Hence why the man on the phone was vague. To give you the correct info, I need to know if these are going specifically for repair (being damaged or faulty) or just being modified in some way. It also helps that these are personal possessions rather than items for use in business. If you can let me know, I can give you the correct places to look to confirm the information and also the procedure codes which need to be used at export and re-import. Cheers Steve

Hi WOT This is part of my job, I will check in the morning the correct procedure and let you know the full details. It is called outward processing, and you will need to give the carrier (DHL, UPS or whoever) full details of the process being undertaken. You are correct in saying you only pay duty and tax on the repair value. I will confirm the forms to be completed (they should be downloadable form the HMRC website). Steve

JUst got mine - I will read with added interest

A cheap CD player or a laptop, plugged straight into my amp, leave out the bass lead so only the treble plays, plug in your bass and play the bass line straight over the music. Not all amps have a CD in socket, but the Fender Rumbles do - not expensive either. Hope this helps.

How may Basses do we own collectively on Basschat?

Not sure about all, but my 2005 certainly has.

To work on my playing until I can earn a few quid (almost there - I am depping a bit). To read my bass books instead of skimming through them and missing half the relevant stuff (see above).
Hi Steve, I'm talking about the Greyhound at Woodville so I guess it's the same one. Shame I missed you. Last week, Rob the landlord said the jam nights were done for this year and as I'm in Wakefield at the moment on a course anyway, I didn't go. The battered stringray is a (horrible) copy and definitely not one to judge genuine rays by I always take my own bass for that reason usually a MM Stingray strangely enough. The guitarist sounds like Ryan, he's in his own little world most of the time. In the summer most weeks there were about four or five guitarers, two or three drummists and two or three bassists, singists always seem as a bit thin on the ground though. Over the last month or two there's been less and less people turning up. Last week I was the only bass player, there were two drummers and Ryan on guitar. Sometimes after 11 there's an accoustic session which is good fun and usually a good laugh - but only when people turn up Trouble is, sometimes it goes on really late!!! I wasn't going to turn up again this year but might if I can. Pete.
Hi Pete I will take a run up next week and take my gear, see if anybody turns up - see you there if you go. You're right about Ryan, he was the one. I am not sure the electronic wizardry helps his playing. Sounds like mush to me most of the time. Steve

Scratchplates are definitely not all the same. There was a thread on this very subject two or three weeks ago I think, even MIJ's are different from each other. I think the idea of trace it onto paper and send it to the supplier would be the only way, and also watch the cut-outs for the pickups, on some models the bridge pickup is smaller.
Hi Skywalker, Yes let me know next time you are up this way and we can meet for a drink and maybe take in a band. Are you playing in a band at the moment ?? Tony
Hi Tony Just doing an odd dep for a jazz trio at a hotel in Nottingham (we moved down here in 1994), and an odd jam night which is good fun (not my genre of music, but variety is the spice of life I suppose), so instead of standards and bossas I try Hey Joe, Sunshine of your Love etc. Steep learning curve but enjoyable. Steve
Well it was turning up at a local jam night that got me playing again after a loooong break. Just had to get up and have a go, been every week bar one since. Mostly it's good fun, but you do get the odd p[licking an posterior opening]a-donna git wrist there and also the thing with local bands playing a couple of tunes. Worst of all though, the bar tends to stay open until silly hours and I struggle to get up for work on Thursdays lol.
Hi Gazm Was that at Woodville?? I went up last night to watch and observe, not to play, but was handed an old battered Stingray and asked if I knew Hey Joe. The intro was fine, unfortunately the guitarist then started to sing in several different keys, none of which we were playing in. He also had some kind of pedal board thingy that sustained his chords for ever, so there were no changes that we could hear, so I watched the drummer and he watched me and we made the changes in the right places (at least we were together, intentionally or not). After my Jazz the Stingray felt like playing a shovel (I am sure this can't be representative of all stingrays). I will practice a couple of rock numbers (not normally my genre), and take my own gear next week. See you there if you're going up Steve

Hi Tony Whereabouts in West Yorkshire?? - there are a few of us on here, Dr Dave from Wakefield and Rhino from Menston that I know of amongst others. I was from Rothwell but moved to Leicestershire in 1994 and like you have recently returned to bass after an absence of far too long. Welcome to forum - enjoy the banter, it is a great group of people, lots of differing opinions (but no real fall outs), and always someone on here to help with whatever you need. Steve

I am delighted to be the new owner of this bass, it is every bit as good as Pete describes it, it plays like a dream, and has the sweetest tone of any bass I have ever played. I have always been a Fender fan but have only ever played Ps before, I was unsure whether it would be right bass for me, but now wonder why I never tried a Jazz before. My thanks to Pete (and Terri) for giving me the chance to buy and enjoy this. It will be a much loved treasure. Steve
My first bass was a Kay "Gibson Les Paul" shape that cost me about £50 out of my mum's catalogue! I paid for it myself from my earnings from my paper round. The action on it was terrible. The strings were about 2 inches above the neck. Maybe that excuses me all my bad habits nearly 30 years later
Same first Bass for me, same price as well. About 1972 I think. I replaced with a beautiful P which I then sold for £150.00 - what a numpty.

Do you remember the coffee bar beside the river bridge?? - that was one of her hangouts. I will check the age thing and let you know shortly.
