Your experiences of playing in a tribute band.
ricksterphil replied to Grassie's topic in General Discussion
We try to capture the 'essence' as we're a David Bowie Tribute with 2 guitars, no keys and no sax. For Pretty Things one of our guitarists plays her interpretation of the piano intro and outro....seems to work ...and our lead singer is female so we're capturing the essence for every song in reality -
Played The New Barrack Tavern in Sheffield Saturday night, decent crowd and got £70 extra (on top of our fee) from a hat passed round the crowd. It was Stephanie the landlady's birthday too. Great night...we're back there in July

Big fan of the G man back in the day...still am but don't play his stuff much.....this has prompted me to get his albums out again. My first ever proper gig I went to was at the age of 14/15 was to see Rory at Birmingham Town Hall around 1972. I hadn't a clue who he was but my sister and her school mates were going and there was spare ticket. The support was Greenslade (remember them?) who were not my cup of tea, but even tho I hardly knew any of the songs, Rory blew me away with his passion and energy and of course his playing. He was on for ages, seemed like 3 hours and at the end, the stage manager kept coming out to get him to stop playing and Rory would play another song - talk about delivering value for money. I've seen him twice since, once at De Montfort hall in Leicester and the last time at the Hammersmith Odeon in about 1978. As always he played a blinding set and by this time I knew all the songs and all the words...a truly memorable experience. I've not read Gerry's book....I would imagine that Rory was hard work in the latter years when the alcohol abuse was ramping up. Some of the recordings I've listened to of gigs he did at Rockpalast, you can hear in his voice that he's out of his head....such a shame. I was so gutted when I heard he'd died, what a modest, unassuming and talented guitarist and songwriter he was.

Band Banners - is there such a thing as? YES! 😁
ricksterphil replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
We use a fabric banner, which is very light (its about the same as a tablecloth) which we got from here https://print24.com/uk/advertising-equipment/fabric-banners/ Easier to hang than a vinyl banner - you just need gorilla tape -

We gigged at Albert's in Nottingham Saturday night, (it used to be known as Spanky van Dyke's if you know the area) supported by an alternative music DJ. Good venue, proper stage, their Pa and lights and the crowd loved it, asking for more after our 3rd encore. Some interesting attire in the crowd too, 2 gents in their late 50's dressed entirely in black cowboy gear - think ZZ Top but with shorter beards, and a lady dressed head to toe in figure-hugging black leather! The venue is putting on a lot of live music so worth checking out Albert's Nottingham

Yup, we give ours away too, some of them signed!

Be interesting to see how it compares sound-wise to a modern combo like a Markbass

a bargain if you're into vintage amps https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acoustic-Model-118-Bass-Combo-Amp-Amplifier/223414663809?hash=item34048d3a81:g:nx8AAOSwMoZccDo~

I have one exactly like this. It has an after market loom and a mahoosive big green capacitor, which gives a fairly trebley 'grand piano' tone. Plays very nicely and as mine cost me £100 it's probably much better value in terms of bang per buck than my Mike Lull jazz

At what point would you consider yourself a "musician"?

Does anyone actually use their B string?

Could i ask what make/model of 5 string has this slim neck? -
Funny that, I bought a lovely Thunderbird 2015 model with the Babicz bridge etc. It looked killer and sounded pretty good too, but I ended up only using my Mike Lull Jazz at gigs so the T-Bird just sat there not getting played, so I sold it on evilbay to a bloke who bought it because he'd "always wanted a T-bird".

I play in a Bowie Tribute with a female on lead vocals. We got to play at the Supersonic Club in Paris at the end of Jan! I love it and there's such a wealth of material to go at, with many of the songs having really good bass lines, it will be a long time before we get bored. We're playing a David Bowie Convention on 11th May in Derby, with the Maggie Ronson band and Jean Genie as the headliners -

Hell Is Other People (who know you play in a band)
ricksterphil replied to Monkey Steve's topic in General Discussion
As mentioned, a bit poppy for me but the singer has an excellent voice and the song is memorable. Good luck with it and enjoy! I for one would be fascinated by a gig diary.....living life vicariously is, after all, living! It will keep my spirits up when we're loading PA into the van behind the Dog and Duck at 1.00 am in the morning! -
Not everything about the bass is great .....

Fed up of Sex On Fire? play this instead 😂 -
Sometime in 73 I think, Little Hereford Village Hall in ..er Little Hereford (which is not far from slightly bigger Hereford). Can't remember what guitar I played (I think I borrowed one) or what amp. We had 3 songs, no vocals and played support to a local rock band (who were pretty good I seem to remember). The audience danced and clapped at the end....what more could you ask? This is us a couple of years later playing The Angel Hotel in Ludlow. I'm playing my pre Gibson Epiphone through a Matamp head & 2 Marshall 4x12's. Can't for the life of me remember what we called the band tho 😂
