  1. I play both, starting on bass in my early teens as my mate learned guitar at the same time. Played mostly bass until my mid 20's when I had a dormant period until my early 40's. i then bought an electric guitar and learnt to play that through the guitar mags and lessons from a local teacher (who is one of the best guitarists I have ever come across). Bought a bass just for 'old times sake' and started noodling and I began to remember what I got from holding down the low end. Joined a blues band, sold off a few guitars to finance more basses. I play acoustic now as I do the odd open mic night but hardly ever pick up my electric guitar although always enjoy it when I do. I think a better understanding of chords and modes had helped my bass playing, but I reckon I could have got there without it
  2. +1 for this. Taking ages to reply to availabiliity.....'ooh sorry, I haven't looked on here for a bit!!!!' when they are the one who is always saying ...'we need more gigs' Doesn't happen in my current band thank f*ck, even with our drummer on holiday in Australia
  3. Wow, just come across this thread....what a total blast that must have been It's very unlikely I'll ever get to do anything that massive so thanks for sharing - I'll be thinking of this when playing at The Dog and Duck squashed up against the PA!
  4. Nice....thankfully I don't need one as everyone in my band is great (and some of them are cute)
  5. I, for one, have been on many of those......and usually at max volume
  6. +1. You guys are good!
  7. Yep, had that one. 'I'm too old to play in shitty pubs' - she was in her 30's the rest of us were old farts in our 50's. Oh and not getting back to me for 4 days if she was available for a gig we'd been offered....and then saying no to it! She was a nightmare....brilliant blues voice though. We did a couple of Janis Joplin songs and she very nearly had me in tears she was that good
  8. We use these guys for courier stuff for work https://www.transglobalexpress.co.uk/ Never sent a guitar tho. UPS are very good in my experience but not cheap If you have a cycle shop nearby (and who doesn't these days), ask them for a box - very good for wrapping a case in to protect the case (having put guitar in said case obvs.) They will also let you have the foam packing which is on the bike frame - they're very much like pipe lagging but in a sort of plascticky polystyrene - really excellent for sticking on the headstock end and the jack plug end of a bass for extra protection.
  9. We're doing a gig in Borrowash on 19th May at a thing called Gilesfest. Its at the Borrowash Victoria Football ground. Come along and say hello! I'm in a Bowie Tribute band www.facebook.com/missbowieband
  10. The Dave Mathews Band kinda Mumfords meets the Eagles http://www.davematthewsband.com/videos/
  11. Aah, lovely bass. I had one very similar which I bought in the early 80's which I then foolishly sold for very little GLWTS
  12. My back thanks you!
  13. CAAAAAAAKE!
  14. Try 'The Circle' group on Facebook. Someone on there can probably help
  15. +1...that's pretty much me too! Sometimes a glass of wine of the Mrs has left any that is
  16. Welcome It won't take long for your GAS to return on this forum Lurking....what a great word!
  17. Imagine 2 of em linked up to a big valve head! There's just one word................HEFT!
  18. Welcome WaveyDavey Some very lovely basses you have there Sir!
  19. I had a Sire m7 5 string for 5 minutes and then moved it on as I couldn't get on with a 5 string neck. Good bass though, especially for the money (knobs are naff tho) And welcome Dorsetbod....this is a fantastic forum with great folk on it. It generally costs much dosh though when the GAS takes over. Are you familiar with La Caverna in Dorchester.....one of my favourite restaurants. Me and Mrs Ricksterphil have had a couple of holidays in Dorset and love it down there. The aforementioned Mrs R waxes lyrical about the Zabaglione served up by La Caverna
  20. I think I'm right in saying that the Artic Monkeys borrowed a guitar amp (think it was a Vox) off someone's Dad when they started and hadn't returned it by the time they were famous and on the radio (which is where I heard this anecdote) And to Oldman for having played the Cavern....well cool! I'd lend someone my gear for a gig if I was a) also performing at said gig, which I've done or b) going to be at said gig (not done that). If they wanted to borrow my bass I'd lend them my £50 Jap Special (Hurricane by Morris) which is a decent bass to be fair especially for the money. My Mike Lull or T-Bird...no way Jose!
  21. My main bass - a Mike Lull jazz - because it's light, fits me nicely, has the right neck width (40mm), and I can change the sound on the fly from the pre-amp My other bass, a 2015 T-Bird, because it's light, plays very fast and looks soooo cool, despite the odd playing stance required (you'll know what I mean if you've played one - kinda 'angry gorilla having a dump' stance) My rig - EBS HD360 through two 12inch Bergs - it''s fairly light, has a great neutral 'hifi' sound and the amp goes up to 11 I have the amp in a 3u rack case with a korg 'pitchblack' rack tuner which can be set to do a strobe light effect...which is also way cool!
  22. I keep my eye on our singer as she is prone to prancing about a lot (good thing) and then flinging her arms out and catching me on the noggin (bad thing).
  23. Sold a Fea Labs compressor to Simon. Easy transaction and no hassle
