A long time ago in a land far, far away (well Shropshire in fact) I had a lovely black Rick 4001 with the rare checkered binding....flogged it for £275 in the very early eighties. To me it was awesome but I didn't have much experience of basses then. Wish I still had it...along with the Matamp 100w head (stuffed with Mullards) I played it through...I seem to remember swapping that for a Peavey Black Widow combo. Should you be passing through my patch (Nottingham) and hear sighing, wailing and gnashing of teeth, that's me thinking about my old Rickenbacker! Enjoyed watching Dave's vid so thanks for posting

eBay is best for picking stuff up on the cheap if you're prepared to wait, but it's also ok for me for selling stuff, just need to be very accurate about descriptions. I've found Facebook very good for selling pedals and also cheaper guitars. Never had much luck selling on Gumtree, but have bought a few things. I've bought and sold gear and basses on here and never had any problems...and met some nice people along the way.

Can't go far wrong with a Sandberg I reckon, I have a Classic TM4 and it's uber. Fender Road Worn Jazz's get good reviews and can be had for £700 if you wait for one to come up

Blue [/quote] To get back to the OP's starting point, I once saw Gladys Knight & The Pips do a show at the local theatre. They were only onstage for about 45 minutes, but boy did they put on a show. Imagine how many times they've sung those songs and danced those moves. Not even a hint of 'dailing it in'. In our band we work to get it right, think about set lists, rehearse new stuff diligently, listen back to rehearsal recordings to see what we can improve on etc. But if we make a fubar on the night, we try not to worry too much about it. I heard a quote from Yehudi Menuhin which went something like If I miss one practice session, I notice If I miss 1 day, the orchestra notices If I miss a week, the audience notices

Unless there is a specific need for overdrive, fuzz or whatever, I just use a tone I'm happy with and don't worry too much about originality.
