A very interesting thread this. I've realised I'm not a smiler and have a facial expression while playing which is a cross between Larry Grayson and a constipated goat! Note to self...smile a bit more!

Why can't singers sing in the original key?
ricksterphil replied to la bam's topic in General Discussion
I realise there are exceptions, Daltry and Jagger etc, but Macca isn't one of them, it's painful to hear him trying to hit the high notes these days
I think Daltry is struggling too...mind you a lot of WHO songs are very high and hard to sing and hard to transpose without tuning down a semi-tone. Jagger seems to be as good as he always was (maybe better?) -
Great thanks..now Ive got to learn it, your fault!
You'll be thanking me....it's a peach. I play the opening 8 bars at the 12th fret if that's any help

Jules bought my Markbass Compressore. Easy straight forward deal with no hassles. + we discovered we are both in David Bowie tribute bands!

Chance to play in Rock n Roll Oldies Band..
ricksterphil replied to Mickyk's topic in General Discussion
They've left out 'mojo' by Muddy....great song and a real crowd pleaser with the call and response -
G# I reckon. That's what I play anyway and the rest of the band haven't locked me out the rehearsal room yet....I too am in a Bowie Trib band and I agree, Trev Boulder's work has gone under the radar....bit like Mick Ronsons'. Just wait til you get to 'Heroes' now that is some bassline!

Chance to play in Rock n Roll Oldies Band..
ricksterphil replied to Mickyk's topic in General Discussion
I've been asked if i would be interested in playing bass in a Rock n Roll type oldies band, they have somewhere around 60 odd songs that they play, and i've been given a list to see how i would get on with them ,now i am a novice as some of you may know. Not really into rock n roll fan really ,i'm a 70s type music man to be fair. Given the fact that some of you guys are well clued up on such matters i am open to some suggestions as to how you lads might approach this.I wasn't really expecting the offer their regular bassist has taken ill and can't play anymore so it may be that they are stuck for someone so they've asked me,and i'm flattered to be honest, only been playing a year. ?What do you lads reckon.
Go for it...you'll only regret it if you don't. You can nail the root notes to start with and work in more complex stuff as your technique and confidence grows. I was in a blues band and was frequently asked to curtail my bass lines and play 'bomp bomp bomp' on the root note. Not great creatively, but really worked with the songs we played. Listen to what the drummer is doing and sync your playing with the beat he's laying down and you won't go far wrong...and playing live is one of the best things you can do in a darkened room with your clothes on! -
Why can't singers sing in the original key?
ricksterphil replied to la bam's topic in General Discussion
Every voice has it's sweet spot, where the tonal quality is at it's best, so it makes sense to change key to suit the voice as it's almost impossible to change the voice range to suit the song. Vocal range can be expanded with use and practice, but there is a limit and many songs get tuned down a tone or 2 so that the singer can reach the high notes. Remember Macca at the 2012 closing ceremony...embarrassing. Legend has it that he refuses to change the key of his songs to suit his current vocal range, which has dropped as he has got older. -

30 minutes 'Spotlight' set at Filthy's, a bar in the centre of Nottingham. Wer'e a Bowie Tribute band so the poster worked! https://www.facebook.com/missbowieband/ Went down a storm to be fair....great gig, fantastic vibe from the audience. Our photographer also has a cool brand!

Take along whatever spares, strings, leads, 4 gang extension leads you think you'll need. Find a nice holdall bag and take them to every gig in that. After a while you'll find things you don't need at a gig and things you do. Having the bag there will give you peace of mind. But mainly, enjoy it! Playing live is one of the very best things you can do in a darkened room with your clothes on - most of the people watching will wish they were on stage with you! And don't worry if you make a few mistakes, just keep going and keep smiling.....

As everyone has said....don't sell your gear, you'll regret it. You might try contacting a local teacher who may know of other guitarists or musicians who are free in the afternoon for a jam....take small steps and all that. If you can't do evenings, there's always a bit busking to be done, railway stations are good places (you'll need to ask permission)....you could donate proceeds to a local mental health charity? Having busked at a train station for charity I was surprised how anonymous it is, as in, no-one bothers you and you don't feel awkward or exposed, especially if there are 2 or three of you. Never give in, as Churchill famously said.
Recently copped one of these from the legend that is Martin Owen. He promises (for bassists) muff sounds and more and bway he does NOT lie!! SMOKES any muff I've ever played through, including my OG Sovtek. In fact, I just sold my (awesome) Fredric Green Russian clone, as after copping the Owen, it REALLY was surplus to requirements !! This pedal absolutely SLAYS!!!! From subtle warm, organic overdrive to face melting distortion, it does the lot! The 12AX7 tube, mids control and boost really make it the absolute f*cking b*llocks!!!! That's all I have to say, just wanted to state my case and big up Mr Owen!! One Love x
You playing active or passive through it?
