The actual bass and my Dad was well off enough to buy it for me.

Some great advice, thanks everyone. I'm probably going to leave it...... probably

I've spotted a bass for sale that I owned as a teenager. It's a hefty chunk of change so I'm unsure whether to sell a kidney* and go for it or not. Anyone else been faced with this dilemma and gone for it? If so, was it better or worse than you imagined when you finally bought it. Did you hold it lovingly to your bosom and make it your go to bass or leave it in its case and play it occasionally and sigh? I'm not giving a brand, but @silverfoxnik can probably work it out. *For kidney, read both of my Mike Lulls

Many moons ago (I had hair and a much smaller belly) I played a gig in a pub in Nottingham which, before we started, began to fill up with Sheffield Utd fans after their match at Notts County. All was well-ish, until one or two of the braver/more whizzed fans started trying to get up on stage and use the mics. Pete, our roadie, took obvious exception to such loutish behaviour and threw the perpetrators back into the crowd. Things got very very tense very quickly as said bunch of fans tried to decide whether they could take on Pete the roadie and the rest of the band and give us a whipping. We were backed into a large bay window so no handy exit stage left (or right, or anywhere) was available and I was just considering taking off my bass and wielding it like Thor's hammer when, rather like the dorsal fin of a shark on a calm sea, two pointed blue helmets with nice shiny silver badges appeared at the back of the room. The landlord, bless him, had anticipated that these footie fellows might cause a ruck(lol) so had sent out his lad to fetch plod from the beat (yes, it was a loooong time ago). Sighs of relief all round, a quick trip to the loo to change soiled underwear and we played the gig to rapturous applause.

Robert Plant's Saving Grace Tour in Stoke. "I'd like to say it's great to be back.....but I can't furbing remember" Plant's opening line to the audience set the tone for a fabulous gig of chilled country/folk/roots music interspersed with the occasional Led Zep song. His vocal partner Suzie Dain was excellent and a perfect foil to Plant. Does the Golden (now silver) God still have it? You bet he does although he blended his vocals with Suzie and the rest of the band rather than trying to dominate. I usually cringe a bit when I see banjos and accordions on stage but they worked, even on Zep tunes. They did The Rain Song which was magical and mystical....even with an accordion 😊 Catch this tour if you can, you won't be disappointed. There's no merch, not much on YouTube....you have to go and watch. "This is one of the best musical experiences of my life....and it's great not having to compete with that racket" Plant said at the end. Turns out he's a bassist too...

When did you join your first band?
ricksterphil replied to Bass Novice's topic in General Discussion
early 1970's when I was about 13 - bass looked easier than guitar so went for that. Band is called Phoenix. We played at a school reunion gig this year so technically still going. -

Wouldn't it just I had the Tube pre-amp / FET version of this head. I never managed to get above 2 without blowing everyone's head off. I got fed up of lugging it around eventually (weighed 30kg) -
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334828519198?hash=item4df555bf1e:g:cJkAAOSw5txkNW2X A 400 watt all tube head! The little pubs we play in this thing would turn them inside out Love to give one a blast though....and a little bit tempted too

Barefaced super twin 1200w cabinet with cover
ricksterphil replied to Plainoldmatt's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
I've had two, convinced myself I didn't need such a big cab and sold them both, and now have seller's remorse! I did a gig supporting The Bootleg Beatles using one of these with an ABM 600 IV and their tech guy (also their keys player) couldn't believe how good the sound was and how light the cab was -

...and while we're on the Country theme, here's my band, Southern Frontier, playing at The Donkey in Leicester last night. Great gig, which we all really enjoyed and got lots of lovely feedback from the decent-sized crowd. Home for 9pm as it was a 4pm kick off

Yes, but the punters don't care

I recommend Chelsea Dagger and Dakota for your setlist. Played back to back, Dakota first, these songs as a combo get a crowd bouncing and singing along like no other pairing in my experience. Both huge fun to play on bass too Ok so they're songs everyone does but who cares, our job is to entertain so these songs tick that box in spades in my book.

The telly on showing the footie drives me bonkers. You can usually find the on/off switch of that particular telly and turn it off. Nice Ampeg rig btw
-
I spy boots and hats....you must be a Country band? I've found your FB page and given it a like......here's mine in case you're in a reciprocal mood 😊😊 https://www.facebook.com/southernfrontiercountryband/

I agree

I've played Oxjam Beeston 5 times now with 2 different bands, including the virtual version they did in 2020. It's always a great craic and the organisation is now superb. At £10 (free until 6pm) to see 100+ bands / artists in 20 venues all within easy staggering distance of each other must be the biggest musical bang for buck on the planet.

40 minute set as part of the Oxjam Beeston Music Festival, which is held annually in 20 venues in Beeston Nottingham with 100+ bands and artists. Fantastic gig and the crowd really got into our set. Oxjam Beeston, entirely run by volunteers, has raised £150,000 for Oxfam since 2011, not including this year. As you can see from the headgear, we're a Country Band

Vintage Trouble. They were awesome and their frontman is superb

Welcome! I shall think of you as "Friends in....." hopefully you'll get the reference! 🤠

worth a try this, thanks. I'm not sure many of ours are 140bpm tho...
