Hey Dave I have finished my rig, but when all wired up i have come across a minor setback. (I have included a picture of the rig below) Furman PL Plus II Power Conditioner - powers everything. Shure U4S Wireless > Korg DTR 2000 Tuner > Gallien Krueger 700RB-II FX Loop in GK - I run the Yamaha SPX90-II FX unit. I made all the relevant leads with Whirlwind cable, and Switchcraft 226 Jacks and have tested them all with my cable tester, all OK. The problem is with my Jazz Special passive basses, i can hear a slightled distorted (overtone?) when i slide my fingers up the strings, and there is quite a bit of background hum coming from the amp. I also have a OLP MM22 which has active electronics, and that sounds great and is fine. When i touch the metal linings of my rack cases the hum disappears. Everything is perfect when used on its own and not with the rack unit above. Do i need to some how, earth the top rack? Hope you can help! Thanks in advance
Hi, Hard to fix these things via email but the rack should be earthed anyway so that would be a good starting point. Dave

The first batch should be with their new owners by now, looking forward to comments, reviews, etc. 2nd batch will be completed over the weekend so the rest of you will see them next week. Dave

I am thinking about having a stand at Bass Day and/or Music Live this year. Anyone going? Dave

The new DHA-DI-EQ PCB's arrived today, I made one up and I am pleased to say it worked first time. So, you guys that purchased a DHA-DI-EQ will be seeing them in the next few days as I wire them up. Quite a lot of drive on the 1/4" line out which is adjustable with the level pot, so you could also use it as a clean boost to overdrive valve amps/pedals or as a high output line level. It is possible to set it to lower levels for you guys with SS amps. The DI was also quite hot so I reduced that a tad.
I wonder what he'd have done if he'd realised how many extra dozens of feet of wire the signal to the woofers had to run through compared to the tweeter... Alex
Good point, well made! LOL
hi i have always daisy chained my two cabs but i was told that the speakers work better if connected seperately from the amp and not daisy chained is this the case. thanks
Makes no odds other than try and keep the leads as short as poss. Just need to make sure that the leads can handle the current if it's a very high output amp so running 2 leads in parallel will help with this but makes no difference to the sound. I was buying a HiFi years ago and the guy in the shop told me the speaker leads had to be the same length within a few mm. I asked why and his reply was the delay could be heard by his trained ears! After I picked myself off the floor I asked for a calulator and did the maths for him, turned out the difference in length would have to be something like 100's of miles before he would hear any delay. He didn't believe me and I guess still thinks he can hear the delay over a few feet of near the speed of light when the sound is at the speed of sound. So, I guess if people think they can hear or see something then they can.

switch on/off thump with bass overdrive
DHA replied to MoonBassAlpha's topic in Repairs and Technical
That was the "bright" cap mod, mentioned in an earlier thread. It looks a bit unusual as I had to use a 0603 smd cap with flying leads attached to it. I didn't bother with a switch, as I wasn't keen on the non bright sound
Whats the orange wire from the centre of the level pot to the i/p pad pot? Anyway the 1M on the i/p jack is there so the only other thing to do would be swap out the old type footswitch. Dave -
Hi, I just wondered what kind of sound you can get out of these? Good ol' tube overdrive im guessing but can you compare to any other amps on the market at all? Also I love the addition of a practice amp channel, however how much volume can you expect out of 2-3watts? Admittidly I usually only drive my practice amp hard to get a good sound out of it.
I am not doing the versions with SS power amp built in anymore due the build time is too long and not cost effective. But still have a few VTX pre-amps available which is the one with the 5-6W output valve driving a dummy load for use with a separate power amp. I have an ex-demo VTX-pre-amp which I am looking to sell, was going to put it on ebay but if you are interested then PM me. Very valvey tone as they are low power valve amps. The volume will depend a lot on how good the speakers are but 3-6W is loud for practice. Dave
The DHA isn't valve clipping though its diodes ;<
I think a few people get confused over this one. In all the VT1 and VT2 pedals when not in by-pass the valve or valves are on all the time and hence there is soft clipping which is what valves do. On the VT1-MK3 model there is also a Si and Ge switch, this does not switch the vlave off but does add Si or Ge diode clipping to the existing valve tone. I hope that helps
Another quick question; does the midrange Q control adjust the centre frequency, or the width of the band boosted/cut?
It adjusts the centre frequency of the mid band. The width of each band is unchanged and are designed to overlap.
Hi Dave, what's the input impedance on the small DI-EQ? If it's high enough to sound good with a piezo (1Mohm or greater), it'd be really useful to me and I'd be interested in one. Will they have the usual crazy paintjob? I'd be happy if it did...
Yes, it will be 1M. It's the same circuit as I use on the Vt1-Eq range and that works great with a piezo. Dave

It sounds so brilliant... had 2 DHA but sold quickly, because I'm not a big fan of his boomy darky tuby sound(even though the sound was really like a kick in your mouth!!!). but this is different guys..
No joke I have sold a quite a few already so have gone for a PCB version right away.
I am building another pedal after a couple of requests. It's a solid state pedal and not intended to add dirt, etc. Its an EQ with a DI. Guess I will call it DHA-EQ-DI unless someone has a more interesting suggestion. Looking at battery and power supply operated unit in a 120x90x35mm box. Active EQ, treble, mid and bass with 15dB cut and boost in each band (same circuit as my VT1-EQ), Mid band sweep Q control. Level pot and on led. XLR balanced DI out and 1/4" jack line out with high level output. 3 postion ground lift switch for the DI with Float, Ploat and ground. 1/4" jack in and if I can fit in on the box another 1/4" jack out that bypasses the line out, i.e. connected to the 1/4" jack in but DI will still work. Will work as a DI, EQ, Clean boost and Pre-amp. I will need to make a PCB if this pedal goes into production so will offer the first 5 takes a handbuild version for £49 including P&P. Target price for the production versions will be £59+PP.
There has been a very good response to this, thanks. I am thinking I could do a second more advanced version that would be the VT1-EQ-Bass-Drive without the valve drive if that makes sense This would use the same PCB as the VT1-EQ and hence would have the same size box and the only controls that would be missing would be the Gain pot, bright switch and Colour switch. The footswitch would be swapped from a by-pass to tuner mute. So it would have all the functions of the smaller DI-EQ plus a headphne amp, line in, Boost pot and tuner mute. Could even add a second DI so one could be pre EQ and one after. So larger box but 2 DIs, 1/4" line out and linked out, 1/4" in. I/P Pad, Level, treble, mid, bass, Q, boost, headphone and DI pre and DI post pots. Gnd lift switches for both DIs, boost switch, headphone out and line in jacks. Tuner out jack and footswitch mute. Would be £99+P&P but would take £85 for the first 5 to BC users.
I'll take #1 Dave... so long as you hand number/sign it and supply the power supply! Cheque or paypal OK?
The power supply is a PP3 which is fitted. I can't do an external PSU for that price. They will all be signed and have a serial number. The serial numbers are just as my other pedals as I don't have different numbers for different pedals. Dave
