I'll add to this if you don't mind... Dave, what is the difference between a DHA VT2 Twin and a DHA VT2 Custom? Thanks
A Twin has 2 separate channels so you can switch 1 or 2 and 1+2 plus by-pass. A Dual is channel 1 or channel 1+2 plus by-pass. A Dual-Custom is the same as a Dual but with passive tone controls. Dave
so am i right in thinking that on clean i can use it to add some tube to my solid state amp? Sort of SVT like?
Yes, just warms it up a bit.
Hi Dave I've currenlty got a LBM fuzz and TS808 Tubescreamer Clone and i'm favouring my OD more and more. I was wondering what you would recommend for me from your line of products. I'm obviously after an OD pedal but i would also like something to go to extremems if thats possible. I know it won't be a fuzz but i want something to go to distortion. What would you recommend?
A VT2-Dual-Bass or VT2-Dual-Custom-Bass will give you 2 channels with channel 1+2 providing flat out distortion. When channel 1 only is selected then it's a VT1 so giving valve clean to crunch tones. Or, a VT2-fatguts-bass is really a VT2-Dual-Bass but with channel 1+2 selected when on. Both VT1's and VT2's will overdrive but really only the VT2's will provide mega distortion as the VT1's stop somewhere around crunch. Dave
hi dave after purchasing a little big muff pedal from recommendations from my bass teacher , i wasn't convinced with the ammount of bass i had it seemed to sap out the bass yet again , i generally have this problem with distortion i asked around on basschat for some advice to add more bass with my distortion pedal and i was recommended to get your VT1-Bob The Blender pedal will this actually work and add more bass to my distortion? many thanks
Hi, Bob is a valve based blender so does add a little valve drive into the chain. It will add a bit of bass but maybe something like one of my VT1 overdrives would not lose the bass in the first place. I find Bob works best with digital effects and removes the fizz they can sometimes generate. Dave

Problems with the bass knob of a practice amp
DHA replied to Alex D's topic in Repairs and Technical
Problems with the bass knob of a practice amp I’ve got a Roland Cube 30 which I use mainly as a practice amp. The problem is that the bass knob of the EQ doesn’t work properly. It works only at +7 and above, for the rest it’s just dead, without any boost or cut off. It probably happened when I moved flat recently, but I am not sure how. Everything else works just fine. Any suggestions of how can I fix it?
Sounds like a trip to the local techie is required. Just guessing what it might be without seeing it would most likely cost more than taking it to the shop. dave -
Sorry Dave, I didn't mean to mis-inform anyone about your excellent product (which really is, it's great using a guitar fuzz, with just the BOB the blender, just can't tame my whole pedalboard!). I was confusing you with another electronics expert I was discussing a passive blender with. Tom
Hi Tom, Not a problem at all. regards Dave
Bob the blender is a passive blender, and after trying for ages to get it to behave with my pedal board, i've given it to my guitarist. He has no problems with it, but he doesn't have a mental pedal board in the FX loop. I have a VBF and it's seriously good. I would get the smaller one 'cos apparently it has no feedback loop, which is just boring!
Bob the Blender is NOT a passive blender. It's active stages are valve driven. Dave
Hi Dave, On another note. Don't suppose you'd be up for making a small active blend circuit I can fit in my looper? Is this an expensive option?
I already make "Bob the Blender". I am not into designing one off SS effects as I would not turn it into a product so yes it's an expensive option. Sorry. Dave
Dear Dave and others on this forum Could you suggest some suitable reading for a layman like myself about electronics in general which would also cover how tubes work and what they do, I dont want to become an expert as such but I would like understand what the various bits of circuits do the signal. Many thanks Pete
I am not at home this week so I am doing this from memory - The Tube Book by Pitman has 100s of diagrams but not much info on how they work so a better one would be Dan Torries book which I can't remember the name of but you can get it from Torries in the UK. Ask for Barry and say I sent you, the number is in the magazines like guitarist or I will give you it next week. There is a web site which someone on here will know as I can't remember it. Dave
Yeah mate you may well be right. I've been gassing for tubes since I bought an Aguilar DB680 just before Xmas, ...because the sonic difference between the Aggie and all my previous pre's made me think that my lifetime reliance on SS, (or ss with single tube assistance) might have been a terrible mistake... I fairness the sound I'm producing right now with the Aggie and Powersoft makes me nearly do a sex wee... So you see, it's not that I'm unhappy, but my recent purchace made me wonder if there's *even more* I've been missing... My first thought was, not towards selling my Powersoft, but certainly *trying* a tube power section instead. ...However looking around reveals that there's really not much by way of choice out there, unless I'm missing something.
Did you check out my VTX range? The VTX-Bass has an all valve pre-amp plus a low wattage valve power stage that drives an output transformer and a dummy load. This signal is used to drive a 400W SS power stage in the VTX-400-Bass or provides line and DI out in VTX-Bass. So, it's a valve output stage tone that is produced. Dave
oh yea i forgot you said... have a good week off dont suppose you have any idea when itll be done?
Not really a week off but there are worst places to work than San Josa, CA. I will check with Jim but I am sure it will be ready for me to finish off when I get back. Dave
I've been considering trying to get hold of not just one, but two aggie DB 728's. The main offputting thing for me would be the sheer weight. (of course, that's if you ignore the unavailablity...) So my thoughts got to ticking over, and I was wondering what the possibility of 2 all tube power-amps of "max" power output (jeez I dunno what that means. 400 each? more? ...discuss!) in one rack mount box might be. Wouldn't have to be bridgeable... would it fit in a 3u rack? (or is that just funny?) and ideally it wouldn't need a forklift to move it... (oxymoron?) Yes that's right I want the moon on a stick. And the stick should be *another* moon. ...And each moon should be Suns. It would be interesting to me to know if this would be feasable, cost effective/prohibitive? It's just a thought process atm, but who knows... maybe it would be in demand in numbers as high as in excess of almost one. (me) Mind you I'm drinking vodka.... Andy
Two all tube 400W power amps in a 3U, no way! But, might be able to do 2 400W Class D amps driven by 2 valve pre-amps and low power valve stages. Like a stereo version of my VTX-400-Bass. Dave
Dave... I think you can spot a gap in the market from miles away!! a BDDI type pedal with REAL valves in it? I really don't think you can go wrong mate! Price it cheaper than the BDDI (if you can) and I think you are on to a winner!!!
So, how about a VT1 with active EQ and DI out? My amps and newer pre-amps already have DI out but I guess it would be neat in a pedal. How much is the BDDI? Dave
You might like to check out the sound clips of a direct comparison between the BDI21 and BDDI here. Though I'd have to second Stewart's suggestion of a DHA pedal if you're not buying for a DI facility - they sound amazing!
Would a VT1 pedal with a DI be useful? Dave
Hi, Hoping to add a blend knob to my looper. I tried using a 400k pot and wired the input to the circuit, output and return to it and it sort of works but it gets really quiet in the middle where I would want to st the pot. Any ideas why i get this volume loss? Do I ned a different resistance pot or have I just wired it wrong? I have the return on the middle lug and the in and out on the outer two and tried all the other combinations.
There will always be a loss of volume with unbuffered passive blenders. The normal circuit is more complex then you have made as a dual gang pot will be required in order to get the best results with a passive design. An active blender will give much better results. Dave
thanks for the quick reply Dave
Hi, You are welcome. You may find that most if not all fuzz pedals will lose some bottom end so therefore may be best used with a blender. Dave
Dave Just wondered how the Fuzzy Feeling worked on bass? Does it retain low end or is it a guitar pedal? Thanks
Hi, It is a guitar pedal that is based on the Colorsound Tonebender Mk2. But there are a few bass players using them. It's an out and out over the top fuzz so it gets very compressed in the mids. regards Dave

The twin does not have the colour feature. It's because of the way the switching is done. Dave
Hi Dave, I'm seriously considering getting a VT1 bass overdrive. I saw the black with splattered red custom paint job and liked it, but wondered what other paint job options are available? Can we come up with our own suggestions and let you just go for it? Do you prefer to take orders through ebay, leaving any custom info/requests in the seller info box after winning the auction?
Always happy to do custom paint jobs. We have done blue with red splash, black with red splash, yellow with black splash and plain black, white, blue and yellow. I will look at other suggestions within reason as it depends what paint we have in. We prefer orders via the website - www.davehallamps.co.uk but check with me first as to what colours you want. Dave

Does the DHA bass compressor provide any overdrive?
DHA replied to dannybuoy's topic in Repairs and Technical
Dave, I've been thinking of getting your VT1 bass overdrive pedal. Now, I am also looking at getting a compressor, but unfortunately cannot afford both! I only want the OD for very light on-the-verge-of-breaking-up tube warmth and growl. Would the compressor alone provide such a tone if set correctly, seeing as it's got a valve in it? Just thinking this because I've heard the soud clips of the Electro Harmonix Black Finger compressor (with guitar unfortunately, no bass) and it does sound like a very mild overdrive. cheers, Dan
Hi Dan, Not really is the answer. It will overdrive a little if you turn the compression and decay to zero but then there is no compression. Or, you could turn the output level up and even switch the boost on but the compression noise will be to high if the output level is not at unity. Dave -
Well heres my latest fill! DHA VT-5 Studio bass Ashdown Mag 300 Hartke 2200pro. The ashdown was supposed to be a "just for the time being" amp cos i got it for such a great price, but in truth, it sounds wonderful! I think everything balances nicely now, the warmth and "woolyness" of the valves and the ashdown are balanced out nicely by the zing of the aluminium cones and the horn.
Hi Stephen, Glad it's all working now. I found the circuit diagram and worked out the channel switching of this one off custom VT5. You can select the red or blue channel via the footswitch or the front panel but there has to be a bass plugged into the red or blue input for it work with that channel. This was the design the original owner requested as he wanted to have 2 basses always plugged it. But, if you made up a splitter cable with 1 jack for the guitar and 1 for each i/p on the pre-amp then you could switch between Red and Blue channels without having to unplug. As each channel has 2 gain stages then this would make it a 4 channel pre-amp plus by-bass. Any chance of a review? Dave

DHA VT5-400 Yes indeed a custom Bass amp. Intial Review / Pics added
DHA replied to Sugden's topic in Build Diaries
Hi Dave, I mentioned this to Sugden, so I might as well ask you upfront, any plans to build custom bass cabs to go with the amps?
Hi, Not at present as we are so busy building amps and pedals. But, it's possible sometime in the future and its most likely I would hook up with someone that's already offering cabs. There are others on this forum which already make custom cabs and they would be good guys to talk to. Dave
