1.
Alhbass, I've just picked up a second hand DHA bass compressor which you're welcome to borrow to try out - you're not far from me. PM if interested. Dave, The one I've bought is from September 2007. Do they improvements you mention above date from after this time, and if so, what roughtly would be the price of an upgrade? Cheers, Martin
Not sure when all the mods took place. The main one is very simple and moving one wire on the i/p pad pad will do it. Send me a pic of the inside and I will tell you if it's done or not. Also check that the i/p pad pot in LIN not LOG. - that's a big help. Dave
  2.
Dave, I've been considering buying one of your VT1 compressors for a while now - though I've never yet managed to get my hands on one to try out, I'm pretty convinced by what I've read and heard from others - and I like the idea of spending my money on something handmade by a guy I can contact openly on a forum too - it's reassuring! My one concern now is regarding the review on http://www.ovnilab.com/index.shtml - I'm no technical expert, just a musician - but the writer seems pretty clued up (well, he's convincing to me anyway). Just wondering whether you'd be willing to respond to the observations he makes - particularly regarding the "noisiness" of the pedal? Perhaps you have done so already elsewhere? I'm not attempting to stir up an online confrontation - honest! - I'm really just hoping to hear your point of view, and looking to be convinced to go ahead with the purchase in the absence of having been able to try one out myself. What I'm after is good quality compressor (I've tried some cheaper ones - Digitech, Ashdown etc - and found them a waste of time) that I'll probably use mainly as a limiter for slap, but which is flexible enough to be used as conventional compression too when required. I'm currently playing a Jazz bass (that may change, but I'm likely to stick with passive instruments) and use MarkBass amp and cabs. I'd be grateful for your advice/comments/reassurance... Thanks.
It is fair to say that my compressor is better for live work then in the studio as it does add valve colour. There have been improvements with have helped with the noise issue. The writer of the review is also a "fan" and user of my overdrives.
  3.
sorry Dave got it wrong , apparently i need to get 9V from a phantom supply, yep i know a 9v PP3 battery will do, but thats what i want to avoid. so..... down convert 15v to 9v, easy or not?
Still need a regulator.
  4.
anyone know if its possible to change 48v phantom power to 15v on a mixer? someone suggested 100k resistor?
A resistor would only work if you know the current drawn. Need a regulator IC and a few components. But you will need to know the current available from the phantom which will be be very small and not suitable for running pedals, etc. What is the 15V for, whats the current requirement? dave
  5.
Hi, I get a burst of hissy, crackly noise on my VT-1 about two minutes after powering it up. If I give the level pot a turn, it stops. What ould be causing the noise? Is the valve about to fail? Being new to the delights of valves, I dunno what the symptoms of failure would be. Do they stop workijng completely? Can the power stage fail and not the first stage? Thanks for any info, fatback
Not the valve, more likely a power supply issue or a damaged pot. VT1's have two pre-amp stages there is no power amp stage. No valve pedals have power stages, just pre-amps. Dave

    DHA - new pedal idea
interesting. would you be doing the single footswitch one in black ?
Any colour people want as with all my stuff. Dave

    DHA - new pedal idea
i was wondering about being able to hit the front of a valve amp with a bit more gusto, and to add some eq as well, or not. might be useful in the mild overdrive stakes, or balancing two different basses.
Also been looking at a stereo version which could have two sets of controls so making it useful for two basses with different setups - could have a footswitch to select between the pair.

It possible to get a very high output so will go into heavy overdrive if needed or even drive a power amp as a pre-amp.

    DHA - new pedal idea
sounds interesting...will the eq and boost be controlled by the same footswitch ?
yes, but open to suggestions if there is a better way
  10. Hi all, Thinking of making a new pedal out of the existing DI-EQ design. It will be a 3 band active EQ with Mid band Q and a boost via a footswitch. So a clean op-amp boost with EQ, really my DHA-DI-EQ without the DI. Is there a need for this? box will be 120x95x55 with the knobs. 9V battery and 2.1mm center negative power supply operated. 1/4" jack in and out (in jack turns in on) - blue led. True by-pass footswitch. Will be offering the first 5 ordered by BC members for £49 + £4.25P&P - Target price will be £59. Comments welcome please. Dave
  11.
Hi, Is the output from a valve amp the same, regardless of which ( 4 ohm, 6 ohm or 16 ohm ) selection you use ? Obviously you have to match up to your cab / cabs to the output imp on the amp. Thanks Pete
Yes.
  12.
That sounds well dodge. The valves are isolated from the speakers by the transformer, so not much going on at that end should affect them, thats why the transformer gets upset by misloading. Did you check the impedance of the cab with a meter? Just cause it says 8 ohms doesn't mean its so, practice room cabs can have bodged in new speakers.
The transformer matchs the required load of the valves (Kohms) with the low impedance speakers. The transformer windings present and match a reflected load to the valves, so sorry to correct you but they are not isolated in terms of load and therefore current drawn. Thats why valves blow when you don't connect the speakers.
  13.
the reh room cab was fine, the one i bought was where the probs started - yes i'm aware that impedence is variable - so even tho i bought an 8ohm cab to match 8ohm on the head there cud well have been a mismatch going on -
Sounds like there was an open circuit between the amp and the speakers at one point. Most likely a duff speaker cable or jack, I would check it all again or you will blow it up again at some time.

    valve Overdrive
Iv been looking for a decent valve overdrive and was wondering what is out there. Iv checked out the EBS website and heard soundclips from the EBS valve drive pedal. Sounds pretty much exactly what im looking for (nice amount of overdrive which can also supply some slight distotrion) HOWEVER it's very pricey. Iv tried a DHA eq drive pedal and that was just lovley and again after a bit of tweaking I could dial in a great tone, although as cool as they are with the custom paint jobs and what not, im not to hot on their look. What other valve driven pedals could I have a look at which would deliver a really nice overdrive, whilst adding more warmth but ceeping the clarity and tone of my bass in tact? Mike
As I only build to order then you can request other paint jobs, lots have already done so. Dave

    New DHA pedal
Thank Dave, can the pedal be without the 'splash paint'? I'm not a big fan of that... :-) Bart
Yes, as they are all built to order I can do plain colours. You can have red, blue, yellow, white, green or black. dave

    New DHA pedal
Beautiful pedal! How are they with headphones? I'd love to order one. How much do they sell for these days?
Headphones are a little hissy but great to play along to MP3's too. Check out ebay for prices as the deals are finished now. But I will offer free power supply if you order direct and not via ebay. There is also the Std version now which is lower cost. Dave
  18.
Hi dave, I just acquired an old VT-1 and the input is from a preamp. I can use the pad knob to calm everythig down, but the distortion I can get with a hot input might be useful. Should I avoid distortion on the way in? Does it mean I'm doing any harm (to the valve)? Terrible noob question, I know, but i haven't a clue how this thing works. Nice noises tho'. Thanks, fatback
No such thing as "too Hot" with valves. Solid State is a different matter. Drive it as hard as you want. Dave
  19.
my gp7 (with the luminating front panel) has just started to hum realllllly loud when turned on. transformer?
Does it hum without an instrument plugged in? If so then it is most likely a power supply problem and will need checking out by a tech. Don't leave it on like this to long as you may damage the speakers. Dave
  20.
Nah I bought it from kev on this forum. It was made in June 07. Phil
Happy to look at it for you and repair at cost plus postage. Dave
  21.
So can i just send it back to you? What is the charge?
depends what's wrong with it, if you purchased it from me and if its under a year old.
  22.
received this on the 2nd , thanks dave.. absolutely incredible piece of equipment .. thankyou
Thanks, always grateful to hear comments on my kit.
  23.
Hi folks, My RA150 has just crapped out on me - I wasn't driving it remotely hard, but all of a sudden the output completely cut out. The mains light remained on, but power cycling it hasn't done anything. There's usually a click from an internal relay after a couple of seconds when it powers up but it no longer does it. Any ideas? This is my second (and probably now my last) Alesis amp. The last one failed with a dead channel.
The delay when powering up is the soft start circuit which is normal with high power amps. Sounds like that is not working, there may be a fuse. Dave
  24.
i decided to have a go with this pedal again as i hadn't used it for a while. And it doesn't work, not a peep out of it. It powers up with the led's. But gives me no sound unless i have it in bypass mode (obviously!). What do i do with it now? Phil
Send it back for repair
  25.
Hi, don't know if this is doable on a forum - and I am planning a visit to an amp tech VERY soon - but last night my Orange head farted out - there was some smoke drifting out the top grill and I've checked the output valve fuses and they are both well blown - of course without being able to see it it's difficult - but I'm worrying that the smoke means more than just the valves, BUT the fact that the fuses have gone in the way they should when a valve pots out makes me hopeful that this is just all it is?? Any thoughts appreciated. Ta
smoke is never a good thing, could be lots of things. Hopefully just a resistor but could be the output transformer. Needs the tech to look at it. Dave
