I've ended up blocking him on Facebook - took a few attempts to swat every different thing he seemed to be using to try and get to me. Definitely lost me as a potential customer to his programme because I have no desire to be inundated with push notifications of every little thing that he outputs.

No-one tried these? I don't know whether to just go with the DiMarzios I was originally thinking of, or take a punt on a set of these and let you all know what they're like...

I'm on the look out for a PJ set for one of my basses and found this: http://www.bloodstoneguitarworks.com Anyone used their pickups? Price looks competitive with the likes of Seymour Duncan, EMG and DiMarzio - so around £120 for a PJ set. Appears they'll do custom windings too at the same (or similar??) price. Search doesn't throw up any hits at all...

Just bought Paul's Hohner B2B - great communications and Paul was very accommodating in getting the bass delivered on a day when someone was home (with much hi-jinks and fun with UPS's tracking service). The bass is in superb condition, sounds awesome and came wrapped incredibly well. Very, very happy!! Thank you Paul.

Kinda torn on this one. Can see that the drummer might feel it was all a bit vague and the response was a bit harsh... but as I'm currently dealing with someone who is extremely disorganised in a slightly different (though musical) setting... I feel your pain.

Hope this is allowed and in the appropriate place. Just wanted to do a shout out to Strings Direct for awesome customer service. Wanted to buy a replacement pickup cover for my somewhat scratched up SD Quarter Pounder P-bass pickup. The distributor in the UK is Rosetti and they have a system on their website whereby you send out requests to stockists around the UK with your potential order. Well, I sent off a handful of requests and only Strings Direct replied. Brandon (Hi Brandon if you read this!! ) took charge of the order and put in an order with Rosetti for the pickup covers, or so we thought... The order was actually for just one pickup cover because apparently that's how you sell P-bass pickup covers... Brandon got straight on with getting another cover ordered and I chucked a set of strings to the order which also had to be ordered in. When everything arrived I was offered a discount for the delay and hassle (I think I may have caused more of the hassle...). So, if you need parts from Rosetti, Strings Direct is the place to start. Service award for "above and beyond" with P-bass pickup covers.

There's been a new batch of Steinberger Spirit basses come out recently after them being unavailable for quite a while. Well, I bought a brand new white one from Musik Productiv in Germany. It arrived yesterday and has gone back today - junk. The previous batch from a handful of years ago was pretty decent (I had a 4 and a 5-string for a while), this new batch... not so good. Maybe I just got a bad one but somehow I doubt it - the edges were all rough - the wood itself looked like it hadn't been sanded properly, just painted over. The finish was pretty thin in a few places and on the heel of the neck there was a patch that looked like someone had been over-enthusiastic with a sander, said "Oh, sod it, god enough" and then painted over it. There was also a buzz from up near the head piece when playing open strings that could have been from the truss rod, and looking down into the neck through the end of the head piece the truss rod wasn't even aligned with the hole for the allen key - not sure you could have adjusted the truss rod properly without taking off the head piece. So I didn't even bother fiddling with it. Overall setup was OK, playable with a bit of clanking when playing hard. Fretwork was OK - no sharp edges but nothing special, probably could have done with adjusting. Edge of the neck was bit... undulating and not very tidy, sound was anaemic from the Steinberger branded pickups - too mid-focused, not enough bass. So, kinda damned by (very) faint praise really. Was it broken? No, reasonably serviceable bass, but up close looked like crap and certainly not worthy of the Steinberger name. (This bass would've made Ned cry...) Was it what I expected? Well, given my last two Spirits I was expecting a little better - it's definitely low end, but the fit and finish was not as good as previous examples, and certainly not up to Yamaha or Ibanez standards for the same price point. So, all in all - not worth the bother! Musik Productiv though are brilliant - very helpful in getting the order done and answering a couple of delivery question, also very helpful on the returns process (though if you reject under the 30-day guarantee you pay shipping, ouch, and it wasn't faulty as such... just rubbish)

Thanks everyone for the replies - much to reflect on. I admit there might be a hint of GAS in the question But looks like the most effective thing is going to be just giving it a go and seeing what results I get. It is useful to know though that the ideas I've been hanging onto for the last 20 years are pretty much wrong... This old dog shall learn a new trick!

Novel way of stringing it up. One wonders how you do the other three the right way round and then go "Ah, screw it, I'll do this one backwards..."

Owned it since new... and not really looked after it. There's damage in odd places like at the end of the body, behind the bridge - how do you manage that?

I've been playing bass for 27 years (or so...) and in that time have been through a range of combos, amps and cabs. The one thing in common - they've always stayed on the floor. My current rig is two MB NY 12" cabs with a GK head, and it all sits on the floor. I'm starting to find that 90% of the time it's complete overkill for the stuff I'm doing. Even one cab and the amp is way over the top - gain never goes above about a quarter, same for the volume. So, I'm thinking of trying one of the 2x8 type combos - either a TC BG250-208 or (if I'm lucky...) an MB MiniMark 802. If I sit either combo on the floor the sound will just about hit the back of my knees - is there anything wrong with putting the combo on a table, a chair or a dedicated stand? Will I lose some inherent bass-ness if the combo isn't on the floor? I tried one 12" cab + amp on a chair at a small gig last week but the hall we were in was so awful that I don't know whether the terrible bass sound was due to the room, or the fact for the first time ever I put the rig off the floor. We were having problems with everything though so, I'm thinking it was the room... Anyway, am I right in thinking (for perhaps too many years) that the only place for the bass rig is on the floor?
