1. I will have played close to 75 four hour bar shows this year. While I'd love to play 1.5 hour shows as a headliner to 200-500 seat venues I think the bar band level is as far as I will go. Blue
  2.
While there are plenty of entertaining posts from people in bands with various personnel/politics/money disagreements, I was wondering is anyone in a band with NO issues and if so, what do you think are the reasons that it just works for you guys?
Because we're not friends. Blue
  3. A lot of these guys that make these YouTube vids are the bedroom noodles many Bass Chatters are so protective of. Blue
  4.
This. Usually even if they are wrong or badly played you can get a handle on something just by watching the playing position. Increasingly my ears are not so good so any help I can get is great.
I can usually find at least one one cover where the guy nails it with great footage of the neck and finger positions. It makes it easier than me learning a cover on my own. A real time saver. Blue
  5.
There are various reasons why I enjoy playing to an audience, whether it be live or on a YouTube video. I do admit there's an element of w***ery and egotism in there though I don't get why people want to seek praise from strangers either. But I do like it
Strangers come up to me after gigs to talk to me. I love it. Blue
  6. Use the pick ups that came with the bass. Blue
  7.
I don't think it's childish. You say you're semi-pro, but If you were fully pro he'd be out straight away. In fact, he wouldn't have got the gig in the first place. If the rest of the band agree with you then he really should go. It's a pain in the arse auditioning people, but in the end it would be well worth it and you'll wonder why you put up with him for so long.
I have to agree with this. Blue
  8. These vids have made it a lot easier to learn covers. Blue
  9.
Was in a music shop yesterday and saw an immaculate, must be never used Hofner Senator bass, made in 1962 and all original! with original sales receipt too. It is currently getting a clean up and set up but it will be basically a NOS bass from the 60's! I think it will be going out for around the £500 mark, if anyone is interested I will put you in touch with the guy before it goes on sale. Just thought I would do a heads up in case anyone was looking for a genuine vintage instrument!
$500.00 sounds off and very low for a 62. Blue
  10. Because it's. Rock & Roll. Blue
  11.
Blue - I guess if the money is your prime motivator then you play anything to earn the bucks. For me, playing music I don't like is a chore and spoils my enjoyment of something I like doing. Music isn't my livelihood - it's something I want to enjoy.
I enjoy playing every single song we play. I also love The fact that I get paid for doing something I love doing. Blue
  12.
But he didn't! I'm sure that this would have had something to do with money and legal commitments to Aussie promoters, but also because they knew that a dep drummer (who was better than the original) could cover the gig well enough for them to fulfil their obligations without any major difficulties...
Remember, for The Beatles it wasn't about being the best drummer. It was about being a Beatle. Nicol's was not Beatles material.IMO Blue
  13.
So any results or conclusions from your experiments yet? Curious to know...
Not yet, I really didn't have time to mess around with anything this past weekend. Right now both the joya bass over drive and the MRX-85 seem weird to me. Blue
  14.
And when Macca snuffed it...
That was Jimi Nicol. I remember that, personally if I had been Brian, I would have canceled the dates until Ringo returned. Blue
  15. I had one of those back in 1971, they we're called EB-0s. That bass looks cool as hell. Blue
  16.
Blue, those 51s are fantastic looking basses. Funny know why that style isn't more common.
I've been gigging with my 51 for the last couple of weeks. Guys are always asking me if it's a Tele. I love the string though body. It helps keeping the intonation in check. Very cool looking and fun to play. Blue

    Super Fuzz!
True, but if you have tried a few you may at least get some feel for how the demos translate to real life. You can hear the overall character, is the drive character smooth or sputtery, does it sound scooped or does it have a harsh mid bump. It is somewhat random though since it also depends on what other gear was used for a demo, compared with what you have. Say there is a passive P bass and no tweeter in the cabs in the demo whereas I use an active J bass and full range cabinet, and the end result can be very different.
Well yeah, I mean even the dynamics of a room can throw off basses when say using single coil vs humbucker. Blue
  18. I use an MXR Octave Pedal. It gives me the combination of thick low end with a touch of high end which allows me to play my parts up in the 9th and 12th frets using all closed string execution. You get a tight huge, thick sound that really great for supporting of giving a foundation under guitar solos. Blue

    Super Fuzz!
Yes ... Excane's demos are cool, but to my ears they tend to mostly sound the same, probably because of his particular bass/amp setup.
Once your at a gig and you have these Fuzz, Distortion or Over drive pedals engaged, they never sound or work like they do in the demo. Blue
  20. Some guys are clean and other guys are effects guys. Every bass part recorded has some sort of effect or processing. Me, I run a full blown board, however I only use 2 of my pedals. My EBS compression stays on all night and I use the hell out of my MRX Bass Octave pedal. Occasionally I will use a little phase, delay or chorus. Blue
  21.
Hi everyone, I'm new here, a guitarist converting to bass (let the ribbing commence). I rashly bought a Japanese Squier Precision on eBay without doing my research properly, and now I want to find out what I've bought and if it's a good deal. The seller claims:
Alder body, maple neck, rosewood board.

This is a high quality light weight bass. Silver logo. These series became known as the silver series and were held in such high regard that Fender actually brought out a new range called 'silver series' and put a decal on the head saying that, but those were not as good as the original un named silver series which spawned the legend.

Same quality of build and materials as JV but without the £700 price tag. Originally I had a JV but this was lighter better sounding and had an adjustable truss rod from the head
From the photos (it hasn't arrived yet) it looks like the serial number is P020262 (or possibly P920262), which would make it 1993-1994 as he claims. I'm confused though, because I thought the official 'silver series' was on sale by this time, contradicting what the seller says. Is it likely to be made of plywood? I've paid £405 + shipping, which I suspect is over the odds (like I said, impulse purchase). Any information about this bass, what its actual value probably is, and what reputation these basses have would be great. Original listing here.
Your Bass looks great. As far as plywood, I don't know, I can't speak for Squires. My MIJ P Basses are made of Ash. I love MIJ Fenders, I bought 2 back (MINT CONDITION) in 2009 used. Both came w/cases $450.00 EACH. I took the pick guard of the 1951 re-issue. See pic in the background behind me. Blue
  22. What about bands that have a "Star", a unique front that people are specifically coming to see? Personally, my position for now is, you can't dep a "Star" Blue
  23.
your'e showing your age there son... I remember it well.
I come from the generation that learned songs with a simple what they called the record player. You had to go back and fourth physically picking up the needle then placing back where the part started and repeat until you figured out the part. Blue
  24.
it's extremely rare to find a bass cover on YouTube that is anywhere near correct!
I find the opposite to be true. I've always been able to find several tutorials for any given song where the bass part is nailed. Is there some jealousy on BC of cover bands ? The way some folks put down cover bands you would think so. Blue
