Just one pedal?
@Blue He didn't say effects in the OP Just pedal so I reckon tuner and compressor is allowed especially as some doncolour your tone
Ok, my board is relatively loaded, I think around 7 pedals. The only ones that get much use are an EBS Multi-Comp and Corona Chorus from TC Electronics. If it's just one pedal I would go with OD or Chorus. Blue
  3.
Weather permitting, I'm supposed to be playing guitar with my band at a private outdoor party organised by hippies.
You guys still have hippies? Blue
  4.
I think the guy plays well.
I like it. Too bad there's not much of a market for this genre at the local level. These guys are headliners, big difference. Blue

    Just one pedal?
Why is no-one saying compressor? I've never owned one or any other effect but it's the sort of thing I keep thinking I ought to get without really knowing why. I've watched a lot of compressor demo videos but the A/B difference is usually slight (to my old ears) so would it even be noticeable in a live band?
Compression is not really an effect in the traditional sense. Blue

    Just one pedal?
I'd spend £40 on a cheap Zoom multi effect pedal. It's just a good way to give you an idea what effects you might like. I might have said the Digitech Bass Synth Wah, but I don't think they make them anymore.
Now that's the one use of the multi-effects unit I agree with. Blue
  7. I'm not much of a fan of slap, but this, I like. Blue
  8. The OP has confirmed why I don't let people play any of my basses. You never know when you're going to run nto an idiotic like this meter reader. Blue
  9.
I have been considering selling my 2x12 and getting 2 1x12s, use them together for larger gigs and singly for smaller ones, then I should at least always have one cab that works through the gig! Having said that, my Barefaced cab has been 100% reliable from day one, and I am very reluctant to sell my 'cherished' serial number 001! Maybe a second Super Twin, but then I'd need a bigger car as well!
I have 3 GK RBX cabs. Two 2 10 cabs and a 15. Thing is while they're relatively small they're all heavy as hell and awkward to carry. Blue
  10.
I think you were more likely to be considered a communist in the 50s if you DIDN'T play an upright!! You were certainly unlikely to be considered a bass player anyway if you played a bass guitar, and in jazz circles probably into the 70s (though there were occasional exceptions like the MJQ). And if you're talking UK, the chances of finding anyone playing a Fender bass guitar in the 50s was virtually nil - owing to our war time heritage in terms of finances there was an import embargo until the beginning of the 60s - many of our 60s acts even, didn't play Fenders - Gibsons (especially EB2 type) were more common - and of course our most famous with his Hofner. I guess these guitars simply reproduced the upright thump better at the time (or maybe that was all that was available).
Nice! That's what I had understood. You guys just didn't have the choices we had over in the States at the time. I lived on the East coast 15 mins outside of New York City. So even I had more choices than the guy in South Dakota. BTW, here in Milwaukee we have Cream City Music. It's probably the coolest shop for guitars and basses in the Midwest. They specialize in vintage guitars and basses. They also have the largest Gretch showroom in the country. I recommend anyone looking for a new bass something unique or vintage look them up. https://youtu.be/94_nik_GE7Q We started to see all the Fender stuff in all the bands featured in our beach party movies. I'm not even sure how George got his hands on a Gretch. Maybe his sister got it for him? Blue
  11.
The standing up is really important is it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW5CKoaIZJg
In that setting and genre, I would say standing isn't that important. And your using a super star bass player as an example. Most of us can't and will never play like him sitting or standing. My opinion would be different for 3-4 man rock band. Blue
  12.
Blue That's cool Without knowing the ports on the brick or the draw in your pedals I can't calculate, I can leave that to you, but certainly you may still be able to run them all All the values are easy to find on the inter web if you don't original paperwork
Yeah, I'll look at an on-line scematic. Thanks Blue
  13.
First, find the appropriate tone prints in the app for you pedal. Select the specific tone print you want to try from the list available for your particular pedal - there are different tone prints for the full sized pedals and the mini versions, so double check that you have selected the correct pedal within the app. Next, switch off any other pedals in your signal chain, but make sure that the chorus is on. If your bass has more than one pickup, solo one of them (it doesn't matter which on my jazz) and make sure your basses volume control is on full. Point the phones speaker towards the pickup, holding your mobile as close to the pickup as you can. It gets a bit noisy but don't worry about that. Tap the button on the app that is marked "beam to pedal" or something like that. You'll hear what sounds like an old dial up modem noise for a couple of seconds and the red light on the pedal will flash green a few times. Once pedal light reverts back to being constantly red, that's it, you're done. From beaming the tone print to being able to use it takes no more than a few seconds. Rinse and repeat to try another tone print!
Thanks Osiris & Bartel Blue
  14.
Dial the level up on the OD I've always thought you should match the levels on your pedals so when you engage or disengage each pedal, the sound level is still the same.. I hate it when you go from a OD to a clean.. soon as you stamp on the OD, the clean signal is just lost in the mix ..
I've dialed it up close to max and there's still a drop. I'm using Voodoo Lab Plus 2 for power. Blue
  15.
I currently have a spare of everything except my cab. I am considering how to achieve that at the moment.
Yeah, I have a spare amp but not a spare cab. I would consider a spare cab, but it would have to be very small. Blue
  16.
Me, Im happy stuck in the 50's . You had to play Fender bass with a plectrum or you were considered to be a communist.
I'm also not impressed with any bedroom clip or any bass players sitting down playing along to a click or recording. You have to be standing up playing live in a band with other musicians to impress me. Blue
  17.
Sorry - I've never heard of him.
Me either. Blue
  18. Another thing, our fearless sound tech told me I'm maxed out on power inputs. In order to put my EBS Multi-Comp back in the chain I'll have to pull one of the other pedals. Which of the 7 pedals would you pull? For me, I'm thinking the dedicated delay from TC. I hardly ever use it. Right now, that delay pedal is last in the chain. Blue
  19.
If you have the compression after the overdrive and you experience signal loss you can boost the signal back up again with the compressor as well as even out the spikes
Now that makes sense. Thanks Cuzzie Blue
  20.
Cheers, Blue, the only damage that bass seems to have sustained are a few small dents in the fingerboard between 2nd and 3rd frets where the strings were pressed against it when it fell. I changed the G string which had a deep cut in it from the edge of a cymbal and played the entire gig on it the next night, mainly to show the band the bass was OK! And yes, taking spare bass and spare amp head is a minor hassle, but having a bass fail for any reason (and my case proves it's not just technical failure that can happen) or an amp go...or even both on one gig...is a much bigger pain in the arse/ass. I do have a DI box in my gig bag, but it takes longer to set that up in the event of a problem than to change the amp over.
Agreed, Especially for guys like you that are out there in the gig trenches every weekend. For the guys that are gigging once in a blue moon, maybe not so much of an issue. Blue
  21.
Why does bass playing have to have groove?
Depends on genre and generation. If your a part of the new direction of bass then groove is no longer important. Me, I'm still happy living and stuck in the 70s. Blue
  22.
I thought the sarcasm in the title was quite obvious. It's very impressing technically, but doesn't make too much sense to me musically.
I've seen technically impressive slapping (Mark King) this is not impressive to me. Blue
  23.
Maybe it's his Mark King impression?
The guy in the clip is light years behind Mark King. We all are.IMO 😁 Blue
  24.
Why does bass playing have to have groove? Personally groove comes way down in my list of what makes something interesting.
Interesting, I'm a groove in the pocket player. I don't have a lot of fancy fast fills and riffs. Groove in the pocket 70s style is at the top of my list. Poping, plucking, hammering and thumping would be at the bottom of my list. If on my list at all. Blue
  25. I have downloaded the Toneprint app to my phone. So what is the next step to get a decent preset? Blue
