Great Gig, Great Crowd, Great Business $$, But We Don't Want You Back
blue replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
I was never 100% sure but I think it had something to do with drugs being bought & sold by some pretty dodgy people that used to come to our gigs.
Ok, well if you're right, I can understand why you were banned. Blue -
Great Gig, Great Crowd, Great Business $$, But We Don't Want You Back
Yeah, we actually got banned from ever playing at the venue again.
We had a great gig at this one venue, but we could not get rebooked and never understood why? Poor alcohol sales and small draw are usually the only reason you don't get rebooked in the States. Do you know why you got banned? Blue -
I've just bought one of these on recommendation of a much older Basschat thread I found whilst searching Google! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Folding-Hand-Cart-Foldable-Trolley-Barrow-Sack-Truck-Aluminium-Heavy-Duty/401261451658?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D2220072%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D40656%26meid%3D99a16a5d1a0447caa336a270dc6a7816%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D331645919400 Seems to be pretty good for the required job ...so far anyway!!
I have had one of these hand trucks in the trunk of my car for 5 years. I have never used it. Blue
there is a difference between private Jam session and public ones, private ones you know the people there and you're not boring the arse off the crowd (if there is one) by doing a 15 minute turnaround, public ones are usually where the musicians don't really know each other and agree to try and do a song they all know or some know and tell the others the chord progression, I agree they can be satisfying for the musicians involved but very rarely provide any sort of entertainment for anybody watching, IMO
I guess it depends on the caliber of the musicians that show up for these open mics. Location is always a factor. Blue
The worst thing about mics, in my opinion, is that they allow pubs to say they have live music without booking, or paying for, a band.
Finn Dave, In the States whoever is running an open mic is paid. Maybe not as much as a band, but the owner pays. Blue
I think that Jam sessions, open mics are usually where you get up on your own or with people you know and perform a few songs, but I know what you mean Jam sessions have never appealed to me either, I don't know (or want to know) the classic rock songs that most of them seem to play or be the foundation while some guitarist does a 15 minute solo
Your definition of jam session is not mine. In the early 70s in my circle jam sessions were for the local top teir musicians with fantastic improvising skills. Someone would come up with a progression or chord arrangement and they would " kill it ". Classic rock had nothing to do with the jam sessions I'm familiar with. As a matter of fact, at the time there was no classic rock. The term didn't exist. BTW, these jam sessions were in musicians homes and not open to the public. Blue
Don't ever leave Blue, place wouldn't be the same without you.
BC IMO is the best forum for bass players online. Blue
Hey! Let's all get naked!
Good one! 😁 Blue
Haven't played in a band in 15 yrs, I'm 57. Just hooked up with a local outfit to do some outdoor summer events....its exciting but its only fun now because I found a lightweight Squier P bass. No way can I stand anymore for 2 hrs with a 70's boat anchor round my neck.
64, bar gigs are 4 hours in the States. Try doing a 3 gig weekend. Blue
You mean he wont listen to what anyone else says, about anything????
I listen, can't say I'll always understand. And yeah, I'm biased when it comes to certain issues. I'm a proud 60s & 70s guy. I say stand up for your generation and respect other generations. Blue
i always think there are things to learn bless you.
I must have a low IQ. I got more out of the first 8 measures of the bass line of this Gwen Mcrea tune then Thundercats entire body of work. Blue
I've no doubt the guy is incredibly talented, but it's not bass IMHO.
It's art. 😁 Blue
Here's another modern bassist who divides opinion.
Yup, not my type of thing at all. To me, IMO this is taking bass playing several steps backwards. Blue
It's a jam over a Stevie Wonder song, posted in response to someone saying something about him not being a proper bass player. Which bit don't you get?
I guess it's not so much that I don't get it. It's just not the type of bass playing or singing that appeals to me. Blue
-
Watch this video for an example of him playing a groove and a solo during a jam. Looks and sounds an awful lot like bass to me. He also happens to sing, compose and collaborate with other musicians as well, so his focus is on the music as a whole rather than just the bass in isolation. I see that as a good thing, because that is how he attracts a big following of 'normal' people who go to festivals etc, rather than just playing to a small room in Slough full of middle-aged bass players with GAS (and gas). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the point I'm making is that for bass to continue to be popular, we need high profile players who have a different take on it, and still appeal to a young and fresh audience.
64, I watched the YouTube clip. Sorry, if he's the new thing, I don't get it. Blue
Eric Clapton is not looking to well. Nothing to do with the thread as such, but when I see people like him looking frail, I realise you gotta pack as much in too your life as you can
Maybe it was a bad pic, bad video or Eric was having a bad day. 64, when I get home at 2:30 from a 4 hour gig my feet feel like their on fire. I'm overall wiped out and colaspe on my bed. Then , I get up and get ready to do the same thing the next night. I'm not sure about a remedy for the OP. For me it's deciding when I can no longer do this. Blue

OK, this is a possibly weird question about gigging...
When you do it, it's work. When I do it, it's art.
Cool, however. debatable. I'm in the music business, your in the art business. "It's art when the check clears" Andy Warhol Cheers Blue -
I'm cool, Always dig the YouTube clips he posts. Blue
My 64 and 74 Ps sound quite different... One is a bit fatter and gnarlier, and a little more articulate, the other is deeper, more boomy and less grindy.....
Great clip, great isolation. Couldn't hear a bit of difference between the basses. Blue
That's ok, your generation had its' bass heroes, which the old guys of your youth also didn't get. Allow young people to have their own heroes, and get comfortable with the fact that just because you don't get it, it doesn't mean it's crap, it just means you're not the target audience.
Definitely not crap. Definitely don't get it, sounds like guitar playing to me. And I definitely can't play or sing at that level and never will. Not many have his ability. My generation, we set the bass player bench mark so high with our heroes, it's hard for us older guys to give these new virtuosos a chance. Now, with that being said, this young guy named Henrik Linder with Dirty Loops, I'm a big fan. Blue
I posted about Thundercat here a while ago and got shouted down by some old people who thought he was crap. Gotta love those ageing 'baby boomers' and their distrust of anything that's less than 65 years old..
64, Agreed ,to an extent. However I'm not personally going to let younger guys define bass players for me. Blue
Blue that's 2 more pedals than I ever use, and that one is a tuner!
I was an amp to bass guy for most of my life. My current band and gigging situation calls for processing. Blue
