1.
From recollection and contemporary accounts the Beatles' primary fanbase was - at first - teenagers of the female kind. As their popularity grew the Fabs' audience extended to include older people, charmed by that Liverpudlian insouciance and cheerful demeanour. This popularity among adults receded somewhat when the Beatles became 'edgier' and were seen to embrace narcotics, bushy haircuts and progressive politics. For example, my father liked the Beatles until - the final straw - Lennon repainted his Rolls Royce in a flower-power stylee. 'That's just vandalism,' opined my Pa and scorned them from that day forward.
Not a bad commentary. However,in retrospect The Beatles political and social statements were tame compared to the likes of Dylan or Crosby Stills and Nash. "All You Need Is Love" is pretty broad. Blue
 2.
Aha! Could it be that you define "teen idol" as being someone who is both a teenager and an idol where a lot of us define it as an artist idolised by teens? Britain and America. "Two nations divided by a common language." (quote origin disputed)
Yeah, I'm thinking I do use that definition. I also would add, the fan base is primarily teens. That may or may not have been the case for The Beatles. Blue
 3.
Michael Jackson.
I'll give you that one. Blue
 4. Incredible, packed house way beyond the expectation of the owner. We play the same club every NYE. We actually came off like a pro band the 1st and 2nd set. Great night, great room, great sound and an engaged crowd. Nice hours 2:00-6:00. Blue
 5.
I think his newer stuff is more accessible for a wider audience, but I think most people still have the image of him as a polished teen wooing the youth of the world. As he grows as an artists and a performer, I think he'll become more accepted generally.
Historically "teen idols" don't grow as artists or performers nor become generally accepted. The Beatles and Elvis have been referencd to debate my position. I contend that neither Elvis or The Beatles were ever "teen idols".IMO Screaming female fans is not the only criteria for the "teen idol" label. John Lennon was 24 years old in 1964. hardly a teen. 6.
I asked for the CD as a Chrissy present, sounds way better at window rattling level in the house than in the car. Yeah, it's a bit samey in places, so are a lot of other artists output, it's as usual one man's opinion. Worth a listen !
I such a big fan I don't have to listen to it and I haven't. I know what The Stones are about. I was sold on them over 50 years ago. Blue
 7.
That certainly holds true for the moment. But Macca and Ringo will probably hand in their lunch pails some time in the next ten to twenty years. There'll be a burst of interest and then the Beatles will go to the reservoir of forgotten artists there to languish in the shadows. Fifty to one hundred years will elapse. One day, a chap in a shiny silver suit and a Jetsons-type aerial sticking out of his grotesquely enlarged forehead will trip over some Beatles vinyl or some sheet music. He will eyeball this treasure trove 'like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes he star'd at the Pacific and all his men look'd at each other with a wild surmise, silent upon a peak in Darien'. Hosanna! Lennon and McCartney will suddenly be placed on pedestals alongside Duke Ellington and George Gershwin and Prokofiev as iconic 20th Century composers. Ensembles will be formed to play the music. In every legitimate conservatoire arguments will flare up about 'period correct' instruments. Eminent professors will expiate upon the matter of flat-wounds. This is what will happen. Because this is what happens .
I can't believe I'm still facinated with them after over 50 years. I'm always learning something new. Allan Williams RIP. Blue
 8. Depends on what path your on. No,1 rule for the pro in a working band might be different from the the pub player or the bedroom noodler or even the session bass player. Blue
 9.
Indeed. Bach and Vivaldi were important in their lifetimes, drifted into obscurity and were rediscovered much later. I confidently anticipate a serious Beatles revival in about 2085.
Skankdelvar, wouldn't you agree ,the only difference is The Beatles never really drifted into obscurity. McCartney is still selling out 45,000 seat venues. Blue
 10. The end of an era but certainly not the end. Blue
 11.
Agreed. For me it has more feel and funk than the original.
Agreed Blue
 12.
Ahhhhh forgive me blue. For I did not know you could see the future. I thought from your words that your eyes were fixed only on matters of the past.
I don't consider The Beatles the past. They're the future. Blue
 13.
There was no need to take the funk out of Uptown Funk, but they went to the trouble to do it...
The funk is merely altered, it's still there loud and clear to me. Blue
 14.
I've had to accompany my daughter to a couple of Biebers concerts. So in another twenty years, when guys are asking questions about Biebers music, I will truthfully be able to say "You don't understand, you wasn't there man"
You won't have to worry about saying that. Nobody will care or even remember Bieber. Beiber is a teen idol. He is not a cultural phenomenon effecting or having an impact on politics, philosophy, fashion or music for the few hundred years. Blue
 15.
I would tend to agree, maybe the fifth would be the first fretless in the standard electric bass format?
I have 2 Fender MIJ Ps from the early 90s. I can't imagine getting rid of either. Blue
 16.
Blue, you are as great at your opinion, as I am posting soul and funk. Both subjectively great. Bub.
Cool, I'm completely aware that my argument is somewhat weak. I have to stand my ground regardless. Blue
 17.
The Stones are a great rock band. They practically invented the stadium rock genre. Anything they do will sound like them and not their influences. The good bands and players will always do this. A band embarking on a world tour taking in dozens of countries over several years will usually put out an album. After 55 or so years it's unlikely that any band will be writing songs as great as they did in their hey-day, but it's "product" and many people around the world will want to buy so it's cool to make an album for them. Nit picking that they don't write songs like they used to is petty and pointless. The Stones are one of the more successful exports from the UK to the rest of the world. They have helped to change cultures (not many bands have achieved that) and today they still make a lot of people happy. Sadly, it says much about us, as Brits, that so many find it easier to focus on the negative, rather than enjoying the positive. IMO they sound as great as ever. It will be a very sad day when they stop touring.
Agreed, I'm the biggest Stones fan there is. Same with McCartney. I'm not looking for or expecting great new material from them at this point in time. They have already given me enough. I'm just happy these guys are still around. Blue
 18.
Weren't The Beatles a Blues band starting out? [legs it big time]
No Blue
 19.
So how old were all those girls collapsing in hysterics at the airport?
I get your point, but The Beatles matured and outgrew the teen idols label. Most teen idols are done when they get older and are no longer cute. IMO and remember I said most. Blue
 20.
The Beatles were teen idols that grumpy old men categorised as flash in the pan talentless mop top whatever's...... jus sayin I think beibers got talent.
The Beatles were never teen idols. Not like a David Cassidy or Lief (I Was Made For Dancing) Garett. Not in the States. Not by my definition of Teen Idol. Blue
 21.
If Justin Bieber were the world's most successful and richest window cleaner, no-one would say anything. It's just that the critics seem to have a different opinion of what constitutes talent. Especially when it comes under the heading of music. I certainly wouldn't criticize his talent for earning millions of dollars. It's only musos that slag him off and if he hadn't had put a certain amount of work in, he wouldn't be where he is. Just because he hasn't played 2,000 badly paid bar and pub gigs over 30 years and carried his bass rig 200 yards in the rain doesn't mean he's not good at what he does. He's not for me but good luck to anyone that makes a success of their life.
Talent for making money or talent for having management that knows how to make money, you won't get an argument from me there. Blue
 22.
Well, that's up to you. I'd say that deciding that someone is 'naturally' more talented or 'plays better' than you and then refusing to critique them is creating your own sacred cows.
I stay away from critiquing those that are light years ahead of me. Blue
 23.
I was pointing out that Mr Bieber was a little more talented than what's on the surface. Jeez. I'm not saying he's as good a Drummer as you Blue or any other of you great drummers out there. 😉
I don't play drums and I'm not great at anything. Blue
 24.
Blue, you can be such an old fart sometimes. Justin beiber is not the Beatles. However that is not why you don't rate him. The reason you don't rate him is because you don't get him. He is very intelligent and talented and relevant to the youth of today. You had the Beatles (good for you) today's kids have Beiber. He is as awesome to them as the Beatles were to you. Now you can dismiss the above with all the "you had to be there's" your breath can muster but it doesn't matter anymore because theres a new kid in town and his name is beiber and you don't get him because your time has come and gone. Let it be my friend and don't be a hater. Let it Beiber.
I get your point. And now that I think about it Justin's song writing abilities are comparable to The Beatles. It's really uncanny how his talent practically mirrors The Beatles. I'm certain people will remember his talent and will be listening to his songs 50 years from now. Blue
 25.
That's not an approach I favour, nor one I think is really that constructive. If nobody ever passed comment on anyone 'better' than themselves then an awful lot of good music (or art of any sort) wouldn't have been made. If fact, I'd say that the questioning of what 'better' means is a big part of an artform's development.
Better to me means, Those that were born with more talent in the tip of a finger than I have in my whole body. Those that studied harder with more structure and discipline. Those that make overall better and more responsible decisions. Those that play better, sound better and have more natural ability. Blue
