1.
If you need them, fine. They look sh*t though.
Depends on the gig. A bar band like mine, nobody would notice. I say, and this is only for bar bands. Use a cheat sheet for the first couple of gigs then get rid of it. We're not playing any material that's all that difficult. Blue
 2.
Jazzy AND funky. This is outrageous
Outstanding! Blue
 3.
Why not ? I like the approach - learning and recording something quickly, but not the results that the musicians have obtained. I'd say it's fair comment...
I guess it's fair. For me, I don't have that kind of talent. I'm won't comment. Now, I did take exception with the recent Justin Bieber post. I didn't see any level of talent in the clip. Blue
 4.
I am 62 years old and can't remember stuff like I used to so there is no hope of me remembering 50+ songs which change fairly regularly! It's alright for you young bucks but all of my spare brain capacity is spent trying to remember to breathe regularly and take my (real) tablets each day........
I'm 63, are you playing those songs on a regular basis? Reason I ask is because my band has over 60 songs that are called at gigs. I still have room in my memory for more. But that's because I'm playing them on a weekly basis. I doubt my memory is any stronger than anyone else's. Blue
 5.
I didn't criticise anyone. If I say I don't like something I'm not that saying I don't appreciate it or the effort that's gone into it. I don't care for ballet in the slightest, but I don't deny the supreme ability of the performers nor the skill and creativity involved in the creation and execution of a performance.
If you don't dig it why comment at all? Blue
 6.
Thats the best idea if that bass exists blue. But if it doesn't there isn't that choice.
Agreed, however and I haven't read all the posts here. Wouldn't conversion means a new neck, new pick ups and electronics, new bridge? Building one from scratch seems to make more sense. I'm glad I'm a "dyed in the wool" 4 string guy. Blue
 7.
Did you see the documentary about the Everly Brothers story last night? Glad to see the same grumpy old men, screaming young girls and threats of banning singles for being too racey! Heard that before... For young people now, those between 12-19yr, youtube is the source of their celebrities and performers. It's a huge market now but still in its infancy. Perhaps its an indication that you don't need to be special or talented to be a celebrity?, but its easy and accessible. There are crossovers with vloggers on tour doing motivational speaking/music/drama at the same show. Interesting times ahead.
There have always been young new teen idols. Some can make it big with little to no talent and some like The Beatles and The Everly Brothers that had so much talent you'd have a hard time quantifying it. Why would anyone even mention Bieber and The Beatles or The Everly Brothers in the same sentence? Blue
 8.
You what now? While I recognise that you sometimes get a "bad press" in this forum Blue, in this instance, it may be justified. How can you possibly defend such a statement? Are you saying that Boober is a pioneering four piece? Sorry my friend. I don't agree. But then, I suppose you had to be there.
It was a sarcastic remark responding to the post where someone was comparing The Beatles talent to Bieber's. Blue
 9.
Where do you stand on using tablets onstage for words/chord changes? I'm in a new band where vocalists and guitarists use them. I'm old school and prefer to memorize my parts.
I used cheat sheets for my first couple gigs with my band. Tablets would be fine too, but only for those first couple of gigs. Blue
 10.
"Check out Justin Bieber."? no
Agreed Blue
 11.
The Beatles were teen idols that grumpy old men categorised as flash in the pan talentless mop top whatever's...... jus sayin I think beibers got talent.
You make a good point. Many music historians are making comments about the similarities in the talent between The Beatles and Justin Bieber. The similarities are incredible. Blue
 12. This is the best method as far as I'm concerned; Go to your favorite music shop and buy a 5 string. Blue
 13. YouTube is a great resource, wish we had it 50 years ago for learning parts. Moving that record needle back and fourth to learn a bass part buried in the mix was a huge pain. Yet, I know some who would rather struggle and play a guitar or bass part arse backwards than to learn how to play it correctly from a YouTube tutorial. Granted they are not all great, but there's so many for any one particular song. One out of 10 will be right on the money. Blue
 14.
Great, ok. So you also accept that basses sound different? And that those differences can be interpreted as 'good'?
Yes,to a degree. I think there are 2 overlapping issues here, tone and sound. A Ric probably sounds different than a P. I think tone is the stronger dynamic. Now , a bigger issue. What does it matter? The crowd doesn't even know what a bass guitar is or what it sounds like. Blue
 15.
. Funnily enough, I also gig. Usually 3-4 times a week. That was what made me question why you think a bass players "sound" comes from their playing when most of the time, they don't have a "sound" because they're just copying the bass lines of someone who did have their own style. Not that any of it matters, because as gigging musicians know, people don't even listen to the band half the time because they're usually doing exactly the same thing as the band in the bar down the road and the band they saw last week. No wonder you don't want an actual debate. You're too busy making outlandish statements based on your opinions before immediately contradicting yourself at every turn...
I don't copy any bass lines, I play in a US Midwestern Bar Band not a cover band. I still contend that tone comes from our fingers if you have taken the time to develop a technique that gets you the tone you want.I believe Scott from Scotts Bass shares my opinion. Outlandish opinions? I am not sure if I have a problem with that or not. I mean they're merely opinions, but I think I'm right. Blue
 16.
Ok! im glad you don't understand you either!
That's pretty obvious. Blue
 17.
Interchange Brown Eyed Girl for one of your beloved Beatles tunes or whatever you happen to cover. Same principle stands. I doubt anyone could tell your "sound" in your cover bass line apart from the cover bass line the bassist from the Midwestern bar band in the next bar is playing.
You won't get a debate from me there. I'm out there in the trenches every weekend and I'd venture to say most of the crowd doesn't even know what a bass guitar is or what it sounds like. Blue
 18.
Can't argue with you there in looks, but an ASAT is pretty darned good looking too!
I think for me it's because I'm not sure where I stand on or what I think of the blue burst color pattern. However, it's a 1991 and the amount of birds eye in the maple neck looks really cool. Blue
 19.
Horses for courses. I like your MIJ 50s Precisions a lot, but if was to choose one bass from your collection, based purely on aesthetics, I'd take the ASAT every time.
Well, since my ASAT is my primary gigging bass these days I don't have an argument. Blue
 20.
His most recent stuff is actually pretty good. The clip you posted just shows that he has some talent but I agree it's been lost along the way. If this guy actually practised and remained humble I think he'd make an amazing musician as that drum solo wasn't bad at all. I've seen better drummers obviously but he's doing a bang up job (pun)
I swear, I'm not trying to be flipent. Could you point out where your seeing any level of drum skill or talent in the clip. I'm missing it. Blue

If he knows how to play it didn't come across that way to me from the clip posted. Blue
 22.
I've learnt to look after myself more and jacked in one of the bands I play in. Not because of personalities.. it's because I'm sick of playing for the sack of it. My confidence is growing and I'm more comfortable with my real ability. I've also learnt I don't need to worry about if I'm impressing people by being all technical. That just being simple and getting it right is more important..
Exactly, I can only take but so much of Wooten or Miller. Blue
 23.
Noticing 'ability' when you're watching a bassist in a band is completely different to hearing a bassist with their own sound/identity on bass though. I've heard hundreds of local players who have varying levels of ability but only a handful have a distinct enough style that I would know it was their playing if I heard them without seeing them. Having the ability to cover 'Teen Town' and mimic Jaco is a lot different to covering 'Teen Town' and still keeping your own sound (like Marcus Miller's version). I don't believe there are many players who have that. IMO, I don't think that listening to an average bar band bass player covering Brown Eyed Girl is going to sound much different to the bass player in the next bar covering Brown Eyed Girl. I'd even say I think the tone of the bass is more likely to differ between the two than the actual playing style of the individuals coming through in a well-known bass line.
No self respecting Midwestern Bar Band would ever play Brown Eyed Girl. We don't. Blue .
 24.
I'm talking about the sound of different basses.
Then, like I said. I agree, but only up to a point. Blue
 25.
Question - do you like the sound of the actual instruments, if you played the exact same pattern on each?
There are certain places or songs where the sound of my Hofner is a perfect match. Would anyone notice besides me, I'd have to say no. Blue
