1.
It is very easy, when in a support slot, to blame poor sound on sabotage, whether by a "couldn't give a toss" FOH engineer, or reduced PA spec. But, generally speaking, "bad sound" is the result of inexperience from the support band. A good band will arrange a song for live: Cutting back instruments (eg. keys or guitars) to allow vocals to be heard, use of dynamics etc, and actually being able to play to a reasonable standard. I was going to write a much longer post, including my experience as "Guests" with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow on their German shows this year ... maybe later!
Musicianship and talent as a band has nothing to do with deliberate poor sound. You could take your favorite band, put them on the big main stage and if the sound management is bad they will sound awful.IMO Not budging on this one. Blue
 2. I'm surprised you use the word "awesome" to describe this clip. Most of the stuff you post is awesome. I'm going to break one of my rules, which is if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything. If I was a 13 year old female I would probably love the clip. Justin as an adult (18) is playing drums at the level most guys I played with when I was in the 6th grade or around 11 years old. Nothing personal, I guess I'm too old and out of touch to recognize the talent. The guy is a successful teen idol. Nothing more nothing less. Blue
 3.
In 2016 I learnt to play with a pick (after an accident left unable to play finger style) and at the end of the year, my playing and tone are better and clearer than they ever where in my 40 years of playing with my fingers.
Same for me Dave but I'm still working hard as hell to master the more advanced picking skills. Blue
 4.
Watershed moment this year in that after 14 years of playing, I'm suddenly not bothered by what bass I use. As long as it has some element of treble extension, I can mostly sound the way I want with anything. I've owned everything I've ever wanted to own and to be honest, I've found there isn't this quantum leap between basses as a lot of people would say. A bass (especially live in most venues) sounds like a bass!. It's made me focus a lot more on physically playing and honing my individual style.
Amen Blue
 5. In terms of being a working musician in a band? Understanding my role within the band Not taking the experience or myself too seriously The importance of having and making every gig fun for me and the band. Knowing when to keep my mouth shut Blue
 6.
Dials are correct, switches nearly there *sorry to be pedantic* 1 is pick up selector, Neck/Both/Bridge 2. Is for the poles on the pickups - Series (bass boost)/parallel (bass cut) 3. Is passive/pre-amp on/treble boost Hope you don't think i am too geeky! What are your other basses the ASAT is blowing out the water?
No problem, thanks for correcting me. In terms of value and utility. Hell, my Gibson Les Paul Gold Top bass and my Gibson Custom Shop ES-335 bass cost quadruple the price of my G&L ASAT. However my G&L sees the lion's share of my gigs. Granted my LP and ES-335 are the coolest looking basses on the planet,IMO. And I only use them for their looks. Blue
 7.
How you sound of course is your technique. But your going to sound different on different basses. Let's not over think this Jeez what's not to understand.????
Agreed ,but only to a degree. As a bass player I'm going to notice your ability a lot more than the sound of whatever bass your playing. Blue
 8.
The basses themselves sound different. Am I wrong?
My German made Hofner Club bass sounds a lot different than my Fender MIJ P basses. But my playing sounds the same. Off Topic; At the end of the day the crowd doesn't hear us or know what we sound like. They only hear vocals and guitar. IMO Blue
 9.
I'll never understand why you think that you have the right to present every one of your opinions as fact...
I don't have that right. And 99% of my posts are based on opinion, not fact. I may forget to add IMO in some if my posts. Blue
 10.
I use my L2500 for everything. It's comfortable, versatile and sounds great. I also love the switching options as they allow you to select between two or three different sounds very quickly.
I love the EQ. Dials from north to south, 1. Volume 2. Treble 3. Bass. Switches from north to south. 1. Pick Up selection (parallel & series) 2. Bass boost 3. Treble boost. Blue
 11.
Yeah it's because we like the sound of a particular bass. I assume you like the sound of yours? No amount of EQ or technique will make a jazz sound like a stingray for example. Cool clip, guys look like they're having fun and it comes through in their playing.
How I sound is a result of how much I practice and learn and ultimately own as a part of my playing skill set. Those with a high level of ability are going to sound great on a Ric and they will sound great on a Jazz as well. If you lack ability no bass is going to make you sound good. Take the marginal player that buys a Music Man bass, he's still going to sound marginal. Now, I will say that buying that Music Man bass might be the catalyst that encourages that player to invest more time and structured study into the craft. Ultimately making him a better player and obviously sounding better. Blue
 12.
So what your saying is, if say I, for example played 10 very different basses from a MM, to a Jazz bass, to an Alembic, to a Ricky, etc etc. all set flat with the same amp again set flat. they would all sound the same.?
I'm saying your playing is going to sound the same under your scenario. Blue
 13.
I like the ethos, learning a song quick and then recording it, but this jazzed-up version just isn't to my taste.
I don't think it's about taste. I'm not sure it's mine. However, my taste is seeing how these talented pros can get together and simply make their ideas work. Lots of high end talent and ability in this clip. Everything is not about what we personally like. And whether I like it or not, I'm in no position to be critical of those whose talent and ability exceeds mine by light years. Blue
 14. Bad sound engineers is a separate issue I still contend that early in the day support acts at major festivals playing main stages deliberately get poor sound regardless of circumstances as compared to what the headliners get. Blue
 15.
Most of my dep gigs are with the same band so I'm familiar with 99% of the material and I know my backing vox fit okay.
Well, we don't have a DEP that knows 99℅ of our material. My point and position remain. Some bands are not positioned to attract or recruit competent deps. Blue
 16. I have around 7 nice basses to gig with, however recently I have been gigging with my G&L ASAT bass (blue burst Tele body style, maple neck with loads of birds eye and active pre-amp). All of that, used for $500.00 with case. Insane value for a great bass that is highly underrated in the market space. Blue
 17.
Yes no matter how badly they cut your hair they get paid a minimum wage, tips are more of a bonus than an income!
Pete, I wouldn't consider or call $2.20 an hour income. Blue
 18.
Nothing due to other band members' unavailability (and we are strict on full gigs only once a month on average) but I'm keeping my eyes open for a dep gig.
Yup, we're using a DEP drummer tonight. Our drummer is unavailable. Guys, I have to tell you, I'm not big on deps. Or I should say deps for the bar band level. We, for whatever reason we can't attract a DEP with experience that can come in and due a night justice. Blue
 19. I hear they are going on your with The Wailers and UB40 early 2017. Blue
 20.
Yes no matter how badly they cut your hair they get paid a minimum wage, tips are more of a bonus than an income!
A little something about Summerfest, world's largest music festival, hosted here on Milwaukee's lakefront for 2 weeks. They licence out little patches on the grounds to acoustic and percussion acts. This allows them to busk for a specific time allotment. It's really a good deal for them, a lot cash passing hands. Blue
 21. I'm impressed with this talented English woman. Great chops, tone solid playing and funky. And she can sing. How come you guys have never mentioned her? My kind of drummer too, he's killing that hi-hat with 16ths under the key board solo. Rebecca Johnson https://youtu.be/dVnJk_cgFRc Blue
 22.
If you really like something it's not unheard of here, a decent waiter/ess service and we will leave a tip for example, people might give a few quid or a pack of beers etc for the milkmam, window cleaner, bin men etc etc
Cool, It's a little different over here. The woman who cuts my hair is paid $2.20 cents an hour. How can I not leave a decent tip. When we have an engaged crowd and the band is hot, we receive good tips. They know we don't make much money.
