1. Yes, With a pick. For the genre I'm paid to play slapping is not necessary. Blue
 2.
Does Darryl Jones count as an actual 'member' of the Rolling Stones?
No, Daryl is not a member of The Rolling Stones. He has been a sideman or hired gun for the past 30 years. I would bet he makes more as a sideman than he would if he was a Stone. Blue
 3. Brand X, Chuck Burgi from my hometown Montclair New Jersey. Chuck was with Brand X in the late 70s. He also toured with Rainbow. He's currently working for Billy Joel. Blue
 4. I have several really cool looking basses. My Gibson Gold Top Les Paul Bass, 1991 Gibson Thunderbird, ES-335 Bass to name a few. I still buy these classic looking basses but I usually gig with my Fender MIJ reissue P Basses. Blue

 6.
Found this article on the BBC web site the other day... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-38135674 An interesting article about Darryl Jones, who was hired by the Rolling Stones as a bass player when Bill Wyman left in 1984 and has played on all albums and live shows since then - as a hired hand. Seems odd that you can play with a band for over thirty years, and not be part of the band.
My opinion and I'm the biggest Stone fan in the World. The Rolling Stone are a very English Enterprise. You ain't English you'll never be a full member. Blue
 7. Don't get me started. Blue aka Super Lib
 8.
my role is front man, bassist, co songwriter/arranger, gig organiser and general of the band. i don't get paid for it, but i do it cos it just comes naturally.
Interesting, were a 4 piece and it's always been an equal split when it comes to revenue streams, fees, tips, and merch. Even though some members are doing more work than others. If we ever start getting high pay gigs with margins you can play with, I'd have no problem with them getting a bigger cut but at the $500.00 per gig level, it's not enough bread to *quibble over. Blue *Obviously I'm a Yankee and I've been on BC too long.😁
 9. Here's another thought. I've seen some support acts come in and had in-depth sound knowledge and experience with large stage sound and performance. These guys know how large contemporary sound systems work and how to get a proper sound from the sound crew. For those of us whose experience is mostly in bars, well, we're just at a loss. Blue
 10. For "big time" international festivals as opposed to the local "wang dang" sound is important for the support acts. Especially for those bands that get a decent time slot, anything after 5:00pm. If you get a 12 noon slot, who cares there's nobody there to hear you anyway. Blue
 11.
I think being nice gets you somewhere definitely, my band has supported a couple of well known touring bands, and the sound has always been top notch for us. We always come up, introduce ourselves, get to know them, I think they feel more included if people do that and not 'just a sound guy', and therefore want to make it an experience for everybody to have a good night. Including them in your band banter, taking the mick out of your singer is always a good one.
All good information, maybe next year at Summerfest I'll introduce myself to a few members of the union contracted sound crew and ask; "How much does it cost to get top shelf sound? " Blue
 12.
I'm sure there was some jazz guy doing it in the 30's!
There were bass players slapping and popping their double basses back in the 30s, easy to find on YouTube. Blue
 13. In term of the local pub band. when the person knows what they're doing, meaning broadcasting decent quality audio a video I think it's fine. Blue Off topic, Daryl Jones I doubt he will ever be offered full band nembership. The Stones are a very English enterprise. They are not going to let any Yankees in, IMO
 14.
I think you did the right thing.
Agreed Blue
 15. Overall, it seems like many of you have multiple roles and responsibilities. Blue
 16.
Trouble is, most bands don't have the luxury of a soundman of their own, or an extra guy to help with sound advice I firmly believe vocals should be the loudest thing as it's the most important to the song. Bass drum close second, then everything else in balance under these.
We have a dedicated sound guy, however when we play the larger festivals with big sound it's all union workers and they won't let our guy do anything Blue
 17.
Out of interest, I wonder how many of you above are members of original bands? The reason I ask is that (IME) the role of each member is much more clear-cut and constant in a covers band. With an original band, things tend to evolve and therefore roles have to also evolve, or new people have to be brought in to carry out those newly evolved roles... Some members might grow increasingly uncomfortable with their new (or changed) role. That was certainly my experience in my last band. Is this making sense?
We're a "Bar Band" not a cover or originals band. However, the roles are clear cut, that might be the only similarity with the "cover band". Blue
 18.
I play bass and provide BVs. I also look after our Twitter and Instagram accounts (our frontman does Facebook and our website) and along with the others come up with our set list, load in and out and set up / tear down.
When roles are defined like that it mitigates a lot of problems. Blue
 19.
Bassist of course, and with blinding backing vox. But I also print the set-lists, book any hotels that are needed and largely look after the travel aspects, what time we need to be departing, sorting routes etc. I also liaise with the sound-person at each gig as to what the band line-up is, what monitor requirements we have etc. I do the hotels and travel stuff as the singer/guitarist does all the gig bookings and social media stuff, and the drummer handles all the merch sales (his wife attends all gigs so does the gig merch sales). Having worked all over the place I`ve a pretty good knowledge of routes and how long it takes to get to places. I`m also probably the person in the band that`s more into the workings of the sound, hence me looking after monitor requirements.
Cool, We have two spouses that are a part of the band. One handles sound and lights and the other does marketing stuff, sells merch. a huge help with set up and tear down and she makes sure everyone gets paid during tear down without fail. Blue
 20.
We supported a 2Tone band recently and when chatting to the sound guy he apologised in advance, as the headline band stipulated no PA subs till they came on 😡
Interesting. I've always wondered when we play Summerfest as support in the afternoon on the same stage with the same sound as the headliner, we have crap sound and the headliner has fantastic first rate sound. Now I actually believe the headliner has contracted for a level of sound support acts know nothing about. Blue
 21.
Bassist. Seems to work okay
That's a great deal. No set or tear down would be great. Blue
 22. I'll start; My role is pretty simple. I was hired to play electric bass guitar, sing backing vocals, show up on time for gigs and assist with set up and tear down. This works well for me for the last 5 years because it's exactly what I was looking for. Blue
 23. I've read a few posts on BC where guys get into all levels of internal band issues and disputes. Sometime these disputes get nasty and a guy will either quit or get fired. To me, a lot of the time it's because some guys don't really know what their role in a band is. Do you know what you role in your bsnd is? Please share it with us and explain why it works or doesn't work. Open discussion, no wrong or right answers or replys here. Cheers Blue
 24. If you're one of these generous guys that is cool with helping people out with gear, your probably fine. I wouldn't worry. Blue
