1.
FWIW, he's mentioned in several interviews over the years that the whole 'Beatles' phenomenon completely mystified the band, them being - as it were - at the eye of the storm. That said, their 'significance' cannot have completely escaped his attention. At the London press launch of Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds in 1966 McCartney and Lennon were wafted past the waiting hacks into a closed room where they - and they alone - listened to the album in its entirety. At the conclusion of their private audition they appeared before the swooning journos, gave the album the Beatles' regal imprimatur and disappeared into the night.
They must have known something was going on. The Ed Sullivan didn't normally have 70 million viewers on Sunday Night. Blue
 2.
Unfortunately. This means getting out socially to the places where these people are and being nice to them. Invite them to your gigs so they see and hear how good you are. When they come, make sure you buy them drinks and keep them entertained, not just with the music. Go to their gigs and complement them on what they're doing. Clicky scenes are not that hard to get into if you know how to socialise and make it work. Even BassChat is fairly clicky at a certain level. You have to give and take a bit and get a few decent posts in before people start listening and respecting your comments. .
It doesn't work that way over here, your nor going to get a local heavy hitter to attend your gig if your not in their click. Blue
 3.
I thought you wanted these bands to be worshipped forever more though? The only way is to educate each new generation about the 60s bands. Some kids won't get it no doubt but some will get reaching for their guitars and drums etc after being inspired just as you were.
I'm fine with that Pete. However that was not my point or issue Blue
 4.
Went to see the Film last night, and I did enjoy it, but I would wouldn't I?, didn't see or learn hardly anything I'd not seen or known before before, if you're going make sure you don't leave the cinema as the final credits roll, as some did, because then you get the Shea Stadium gig, bit strange I thought, I sat there watching the Shea gig and started thinking about another thread on here about Cliff Richard sanitising Rock and Roll, if you compare the two, ( the Shea gig and the Cliff video of him doing Roll Over Beethoven) hopefully you'll get what I'm on about
I didn't know they told a promoter down south to take a hike on his racially segregated show. Blue
 5.
I think there was a PA of sorts, during the film it said they used the stadium PA and it looked like there was narrow speakers propped up with bits of wood around the stage area so did you hear anything apart from the screaming?
Yes. Those little metal cones the announcers used for sporting events, hardly an integrated PA. I'm not even sure Ringo's kick was miced or if they had stage monitors. Blue
 6.
Go for it Blue, I'm by no means knocking you, but you seem to be making a lot of excuses for why your aren't where you want to be. Go MAKE it happen, no one else Is going to gift this to you!
No correction needed, I think you understand exactly where I'm coming from. I've had a tiny taste of walking away from a few 1.5 hour gigs with $600.00 bucks in my wallet. And a big long taste of struggling with 4 hour US bar gigs walking away with $125.00. I want more money and a higher caliber of shows. Yes. I know it will have to involve moving. Blue
 7.
Many years ago I auditioned for a local cover band. They didn't give it to me. They said there was nothing to choose between me and the other bassist so it came down to who lived closest and would have the shortest travelling.
I got that line of BS from a band once.If I'm not what your looking for, that's fine and I don't have a problem with it.However, I should decide if the travel is too much. And again, in the end I found they really didn't gig that much and disbanded. Guys, never forget good bands and good, honest, stable trustworthy people to play with are far and few in between. Blue
 8.
I am in a pickle. After my blues band collapsed in style in January, it took me months before I felt able to go through the rigmarole of playing with others again. I was playing with exceptionally talented musicians, but the two guitarists and the keys/vocals had terrible egos. The drummer and I realised that we had been relegated to being a backing track so the other three could solo. Each practice was a nightmare and I dreaded them. The drummer had a mental breakdown and left. I left too. The others continued, and now play with a backing track generated on the keyboard. It actually sounds ok, but enough about that. I joined a newly started band. We have now had two practice sessions and I am not sure this is a good idea. The bad: - They are all inexperienced - really inexperienced. I am head and shoulders above the others, talent-wise. The ages of the others range from early 20s to mid 40s, so not teenagers, but they are all relatively new to their instruments. The good: - It is fun to play with them, although some of the songs are not to my liking - The practice time suits me and it means that I do not need to do all that much homework (which is good, as I have very little spare time) The thing is that I am not a particularly gifted musician. I have always been, I feel, the weakest member of every band. This has meant that I have had to learn an awful lot and I have developed tremendously as a player with each band I have been in. With this band, I feel that I am not going to be developing much. Of course, I could use this as an opportunity to take my fretless out and work on that. What do the good people of this parish think? Look for another band which is a bit more skilled, or stay in this one and see how it develops?
Ok, they're fun to play with. The real question you might ask yourself is; "What am I looking for in a band?" If it's merely guys that are fun to play with, this might be a match for you and you should stay. If there are other things that you require in a band keep looking. Blue
 9.
I love some Beatles tunes, really don't like some at all. My mum saw them play a couple of times. Um....there, that's about it. I don't mind if people like them or not, it's no skin off my nose. George was the coolest, btw.
There's no bigger Beatles fan than me and I don't like all of their songs. And I rarely listen to their records. Blue
 10.
I auditioned for a sort of AC/DC tribute a while back. Some original stuff in there too but all in the style. Played well but didn't get it due to them looking for someone with a "little more energy and presence" which I translated as "too old" Fair enough, I've no problem with that. It was their band, not mine. I would've looked like their granddad on stage anyway. Unless you're told that you're not good enough, no point in dwelling on anything like that.
I think it's a good idea to have an intelligent conversation before any audition for an established working band and find out; 1. What are you really looking for 2. What happened with the last bass player That's just 2 questions there are many more you might want to ask. I always ask the age of band members because I take a hard stance on age. I'm not auditioning if the mean age of the members is half my age. Just plain out and out not going to entertain the idea. For you guys over 60 like me, if it's a young band and they tell you age doesn't matter. It does, maybe not immediately, but at some point you'll realize your not a match because of your age with few to no exceptions. Blue
 11.
And Elvis is Elvis, Clapton is Clapton. The fact they shaped modern music doesn't mean everyone has to like them.
No, and there are plenty of people that don't. However, all accomplished successful musicians I know, that are not necessarily fans still put them at the top of the heap because they shaped modern music. Blue
 12. Make sure you only audition for bands you have researched and know your a match for. For established working bands, they're usually looking for a personality match and singing ability more than how well a guy plays bass. Me personally, I lost one about 10 years ago, they went with a guy that came to the audition unprepared, but was a friend of the guitarist. Turned out the guy didn't have reliable transportation and they let him go within a few months. Turned out the band really didn't gig as much as I thought. My advice ask a band if they are auditioning any friends of the band. If they are I'd take a pass. Beating out a friend is really impossible. Blue
 13.
Went to see the Film last night, and I did enjoy it, but I would wouldn't I?, didn't see or learn hardly anything I'd not seen or known before before, if you're going make sure you don't leave the cinema as the final credits roll, as some did, because then you get the Shea Stadium gig, bit strange I thought, I sat there watching the Shea gig and started thinking about another thread on here about Cliff Richard sanitising Rock and Roll, if you compare the two, ( the Shea gig and the Cliff video of him doing Roll Over Beethoven) hopefully you'll get what I'm on about
I was at the Shea Show. I still can't believe they played a stadium gig with no PA. I don't think a true PA was even conceptual at the time. Blue
 14.
not from me, the Stones are still 'edgy' although they do make their songs overly long, don't know why, it's not like they're short of material
I know they make mistakes like any other band. Saw them in a small venue in 2015 and they almost completely crashed "Honkey Tonk Women" The keyboard player screws up the timing in the cow bell intro and threw Kieth off. Somehow Mick pulled everyone together, but it took a while. Who noticed probably me and a few other musicians. I also take issue when some rich bloke brings all his kids to the show to prove how cool his generation was. At least my kids were honest and told me they don't give a rats arse about The Stones. Blue
 15.
I have no Beatles recordings but they did some great stuff. Like the Beach Boys, you may not have them high on your play list but you have to acknowledge the contribution that they have made.
Just cool stuff for me. I was probably 8 or 9 living in Southern Spain listening to the Beach Boys "Shut Down" album. I was introduced to The Beatles a short time after that.My Dad purchased "Something New" & "Meet The Beatles" for me. Good days. Blue
 16.
I've broken quite a few well strung, high quality bass strings when playing hard with my fingers. Sometimes you just get really into the music, start to "feel it" and play harder. If you've never "felt it" you wouldn't know
I get that feeling all the time, but it's never caused a string to break. I'm calling nonsense on this one. Blue
 17. For a funkier sound all you have to do is play funkier bass lines and with help from your drummer the songs will sound funkier and shouldn't interfere or throw off your singer and guitarist Blue
 18.
agreed, generally the response here is "i love the beatles" or "not my thing but i appreciate their impact". i think everyone who plays bass respects what the beatles were and the movement they started, there are some here that may not like them, but hey.... that's not a crime
The Beatles are really not a like or not like proposition. They were The Beatles that's all that needs to be said. Blue
 19.
It will depend on the copyright holder. If you try to YouTube Beatles numbers they're pretty sparse.
Really, there are hundreds of Beatles videos on YouTube. I watched the Strawberry Fields video last night on YouTube. Blue
 20.
Sir Cliff's live version. Nation shocked as 'chicken in a basket circuit' guitarist beats the bollocks off Jeff Lynne while a 75 year-old pensioner grooves around like a man half his age.
"Grooves around like a man half his age?" I'm a Cliff fan but I find it interesting when I make the same comment about Sir Mick most here get negative. Again interesting. Blue
 21. If I was playing metal I would daisy up 2 Orange tube rigs, one bass and one guitar rig with several fuzz, distortion and octave pedals. Any decent bass would work. Blue
 22. We've had covers on YouTube for years with no copywriter issues. If it was a big deal all the cover tutorials would be taken down. Good question though. If you dig too deep you'll likely run into someone's hand out for some cash. Blue
 23.
http://www.youtube.c...oven+new+single oh dear, is this really the same bloke that made one of the best British Rock and Roll records (Move It) it's been downhill ever since, his voice is just too damned polite
Nice! Wish I could sing it half that good. Blue
 24. Unless the string was not strung properly, poor quality string or just plain abuse how can you break a bass guitar string? I've been actively playing for 50 years and never broken a string. Blue
 25.
^ Yes - this is the one... You can ask when people are not free and go from there... but there's always somebody that replies, "I think I'm pretty free...". What use is that? I'm the one dealing with the clients and you just come across like a complete d1ck if you don't know if the band can actually do a gig, especially if the client is saying, "I want the exact lineup that I saw at..." So even then you have to go around and confirm everything with everybody again.... and then you get a "Actually, I don't think I'm free". Was a lot easier in my last band where everybody took everything!
Again that sounds like something guys say when they have little to no band experience and don't understand it's a business Blue
