1. If a band is making money and it's a viable source of needed income for the members, they'll get back to you and respond promptly. Blue
 2.
There's tons of information on youtube ect....Scotts Bass Lessons is chock full of lessons and information plus he does a Bass Academy as well which you can join. Personally i would Google some very basic lessons on scales and arpeggios, some simple 12 bar blues bass lines which when you learn a basic 1-4-5 blues progression you can transfer it to any key good for jamming along to old Blues and Rock and Roll standards that's how i first started and was playing in a Rock and Roll Band after 6 months of picking a Bass up. Plus there's a ton of information on this very forum plus lots of help and advice....best of luck and enjoy
Definitely use YouTube tutorials. Learn the basics, strings, all of the major scales and yes build from the blues. The blues will give you the best foundation for any genre you like. Blue
 3. A lot of English humor goes way over my head. However the intro with the female removal is insane funny to me Bluelue
 4.
I guess the other thing is what makes you a 'hitter'.... having the gig or having the talent. I agree that one should lead to the other but music is also nothing if not cliquey. For example, who gives out deps..?? and do they give it to a guy that could possibly take the gig? Yes, we can be an insecure lot... and sometimes, with good reason. The very best player around here has done it all... and even though he is out of the game, it is obvious he is on another level... Everyone knows that..except the guys who play the same instrument. and guys who just don't know, full stop.
I don't know much about the depping world. However what seems to be the case in my part of the world, its another closed clicky scene. Blue
 5.
You don't need to add disclaimers Blue. This is quality stuff. Ringo sounded great, all out of key and nervous 😃
All the guys I grew up with learning to play and starting bands in our little East Coast community of young Black musicians in the mid 60s got the bug and inspiration from the United Artist Film release, "A Hard Days Night". To this day when someone mentions The Beatles, we all still say; "Those guys had it together like no others" Blue
 6.
A Good Post, and a solemn (well, not as solemn as all that...) reminder that there was Life before d&b monitors, or IEM's, that one does not systematically need ear protection if the drummer's good, and that 1kw for a bass amp is not the only way to be heard. No pedal boards, either, no DI, no ... well, no anything, really. Just good old-school talent and honed quality. A Good Post; thanks for sharing.
I'm still amazed at their sound when there was barely any technology for live performance. Watching and studying these clips has been a huge help to me in improving my background vocal abilities. Blue
 7. Not for everyone, mostly for older hard core fans. For the older hard core fans. This clip is a historical reflection on great song writing, singing, showmanship and professionaism. What a great set list, all favorites for me. https://youtu.be/GxcSUiHnhag Blue
 8.
Subject for another thread and one I'd be interested in. Some full time guys, I don't give too much credence to, tbh. It is just what they do and the path they want to follow. Apart from that, it doesn't amount too much. For example, a more than decent earning function band will support quite a few of these guys full time with a bit of work elsewhere to cover earnings. Heavy hitters to me would be guys out on very creditable tours with big names. But even then... some of them may not be amongst the best of the local guys. And by best of the local guys, I mean guys who are well known through out the county and possibly beyond. So, yes,..it could get quite grey ;lol:
Agreed, I'm already a full time guy, but no way anywhere near a heavy hitter. I'm not even a hitter. IMO, we only have 2 guys here in Milwaukee that are heavy hitters, Daryl Strummer (Genesis) and Greg Koch. And both of these guys have large stables of bass players they work with exclusively. Blue
 9.
Recent pix from Tavistock Wharf, charity event for Crisis, Musicians Against Homelessness. Looking fit, looking good. Blue Yamaha BB414 through house rig and BIG PA (20kW).
10. We rotate around 70 songs, so in 4 hour bar gig we never get to play everything. I know most of the songs inside out, but when sone songs are not called for weeks on end I can get shakey on some songs. We don't use set lists. BL calls the songs and she calls them fast so you have to be focused and ready. Blue
 11.
The way it works is that a full time guy will want to fill his dates and monday and tues are slow dates, typically. So, he may well run a jam night. He will also share this amongst his mates so they get paid as the house band as well. Sunday evening might a choice althu a round here sunday is a good day to gig as you could have 3 dates that day, 2 paid gigs and a Jam session so racking up £200 in total isn't out of the question on a sunday. This is good money and probably the only time they will beat that in terms of money earned is a sat night function gig or a session. Cover all your bases and earn money on a typical 'bad' earning day means you are under less pressure elsewhere during the week. There aren't many full time guys that can afford to miss this sort of trick, IMO.
I think what I'm saying is, there's a big difference between "full time guys" and who I would consider "heavy hitters". Bluw
 12.
Working musicians run them and get paid here .... which is why they are on mondays or tues, and nowhere near the weekend The house-band gets paid.
They might be working musicians, but none that has anymore work than I have presently. None of the local heavy hitters that I would want to network with participate in open mic nights. Blue
 13.
Working musicians run them and get paid here .... which is why they are on mondays or tues, and nowhere near the weekend The house-band gets paid.
Yeah and that pay is generally not as much as weekend pay. It's merely a way for the land Lord to generate a little more business during slow week nights and for newbies to get a chance to play. It's not a vehicle for seasoned musicians to network or get work. Blue
 14.
Just like the Wirebirds guitarist, another Al, he fixes trucks etc as a day job. Fingers like fat sausages, but man can he get some sweet blues out of his guitar.
That's cool. Blue
 15.
If I was making a living from playing 4 hour bar gigs, I would be considering my options too. Do you teach bass? If so, do you get paid more for doing a 4 hour bar gig (to include expenses and travel time) than you would for teaching for 4 hours in the comfort of your own home? Granted, it may not be as glamorous, but if it's your sole income it's worth a thought.
Adding teaching to my stream of income is something I'd consider. It's a $25.00 per half hour proposition. If you can keep a half dozen of reliable students it's a good deal. Blue
 16.
Earning on a down night for venue and musician running it. I'm not keen if the deal is 12 bar, tbh.. so it really depends WHO runs it and who they get to support it. The better ones are for guys looking for a few dates and just to show your face that you are available. It is important to have a decent mix but the starter guys can't be allowed to bog down the evening...as nobody will come and listen and the 'night' has no real long term appeal. This is why you pay the core band and introduce new people sparingly. You can afford one train wreck, but not more than that, IMO.
Depends on the community, here your not going to meet other musicians with work at open mics. Working musicians don't attend these open to the public open mics. It's strictly a 'newbie" scene. Blue
 17.
Can't think of anything by Albert King that isn't worth its weight in gold, brilliant musician.
And a fine mechanic. If the bus broke done Albert was the guy under the hood. Blues
 18.
Can't think of anything by Albert King that isn't worth its weight in gold, brilliant musician.
And all that stuff lends itself to rock & roll , prog, just about any form of pop music. Click tracks, if it's done right I guess it's fine. Blue
 19.
Why the hell would you take a 12 string bass to a jam night? A bit self-defeating. We all know what jam nights are for
Guitarists and blues harp players around here.In many cases bass is not open for outsiders. Blue
 20.
I had an opportunity many years ago early 80's to up sticks join an established Band who were gigging regularly a full time job at the time and didn't take it up remaining at my home town...gigging occasionally a move that I have regretted many times. At the time i had nothing to stop me...my advice for anyone given the opportunity take it or spend your entire life thinking what if.
I know 2 guys that are successful touring with international stars. I attended High School with both and played in bands with both. They both took high risks at a young age. I went off to University. Blue
 21.
Clicky is the right word, Blue. They like to keep their club exclusive - it protects their income.
Agreed Blue
 22.
Sounds like an awful lot of highly skilled classical musicians to me. I play in a local educational orchestra (and smaller ensembles) and the drummer / percussionist and me have a lot of pub gig experience. We piss about with the tunes as we feel like it (or up to the point we get told off!) The vast majority of the classical guys get upset when we are doing that, let alone when they are told they can improv! They seem to freeze, or play what is written with the odd added octave or rest! One of my mates is a cellist. Could sight read Grade 8 exam pieces in a dark room wearing sunglasses. She can't improvise worth a damn.Funnily enough the players of the "jazz" instruments (trumpet, clarinets etc) seem to be far better. I suppose there is more of a cross-over for those instruments. But the bassoons and cellos etc - not a chance.
As a teen, me and my best friend would stay in his basement for hours on end playing and listening to Muddy Waters and Albert King. All that jamming and improvising at a young age has been invaluable. Blue
 23.
I agree, Blue, there seem to be fewer people able to simply play, they have to have something recorded in their brains and just press the internal play button. It's only in the last few years that I've had to really learn songs, before that it was just a question of what key, what sort of feel, and go for it. I still much prefer to work that way, playing other people's basslines feels a bit wrong at time, like wearing their dirty socks.
Agreed, Dave we recently added "The Weight" and "Lay Down Sally" to our set list. Pretty easy tunes. I went out to YouTube and searched for covers to get ideas on how I wanted to approach these songs. I studied a few live covers and said ok I get it. Then I come up with my version or take on the songs, how I would play it. YouTube is just a tool that I use in different ways and utilize. Some will struggle with a song forever before they will seek help. But hey, I'm retired. I have all the time in the world to woodshed and YouTube. Blue
 24.
I thought you played a hofner, p bass etc and an ampeg b15. Or is that in my imagination lol.
I play 7 different basses including my German made Hofner Club bass. An Ampeg B-15? No Blue
