1.
When playing your bass live, in a studio or at home, how does it make you feel. Are you lost in what you are doing or is it something that has now become repetitive, a chore?
After 50 years it's always a blast. It's never been a chore and never will be. How could gigging ever be a chore? Blue
 2.
When I was in Rochester, NY, my guide Marie pointed out the canal. I never knew the US had canals for the same purpose we did (transportation of goods before road transport got popular). She knew this would surprise me. In much the same way, I've been racking my brains trying to think if I have ever heard of an american equivalent of the holiday camp and I cant think of one. After WW2 few people here had cars, and so the holiday camp you could reach by train in a couple of hours from pretty much anywhere was a good idea. I suspect there is no direct equivalent largely due to geography and more distributed populations in the US. It was all a bit second rate, but still better than the factory https://en.wikipedia...ki/Holiday_camp
Thanks Geek, Nice history of the Holiday Camp. Blue
 3.
This is a holiday camp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOag3Fcig_Y
OMG, funny stuff. Finally British humour that doesn't go over my head. Blue
 4.
I've played that festival - headlining the smaller stage (Jaks) on the Friday night in 2013 It's a good event, nowhere near as grim as some of the other holiday camps I've played...!
Ok guys, most know I'm a Yankee. What is a holiday camp? Blue
 5.
Yup - Butlins. http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/bigweekends/rb2017/
Looks like a cool event. Blue
 6.
Ìf you want to sound like you really know it blue then calling it "Skeggy" is the way to go
I will do that. Blue
 7.
I didn't expect my pic to be so small, apologies.
No problem, Thanks Tin Man. Blue
 8.
It's in Lincolnshire.
Cool, I've heard of Lincolnshire. Blue
 9.
Very good point this. I`m similar but with Jazzes, I love the sound of them except when I play them. I`ve had numerous Jazz basses and sold them on, sometimes you have to accept that a particular type of instrument just doesn`t work for you, even though they sound great when played by others.
If I'm hitting on all 6 cylinders I can sound pretty good on any bass. If it's an off night, I'd sound awful regardless of what type of bass I was playing. Having a P Bass is always handy. However I contend all you need is a bass with good action, intonation and good electronics. Blue
 10. I only ask because we're opening for Morland & Arbuckle a national act that does that Delta and Mississippi Hill Country blues stuff this weekend. I noticed they have a gig coming up at the Great British Rock and Blues Festival in Skegness, UK. Should be a fun gig, sound, lights and back line provided. We only have to play an hour set. I'll be home early for a change. Blue
 11.
I think the problem with all this is P's are way more demanding of finger tip control than near any other bass.....get it right and they can sound amazing......get it wrong and they sound like mud..indistinct and awful. I play old dead, heavy flats with a light touch, couldnt be happier, fantastic hefty, middly tone which oddly enough seems to cover just about everything bar slap of course.
In live performance there are a lot of variables that will impact the sound of any bass. Blue
 12. I have several high end expensive basses , however I gig my 2 MIJ Fender Ps most of the time. Blue
 13.
I have never seen that. I have seen people say that they didn't want to gig, or that they didn't want to put the time in, or that they didn't enjoy it, or that there wasn't any / enough money but I haven't seen anyone actually say that gigging itself was a waste of time and noone should do it. I think some posts depend on how you read them, and as you specifically have a very absolute way of saying something (the 'noone hauls equipment for a gig for free' sort of thing), you probably do see some absolutes thrown back at you just to counteract that. Most of my life I haven't been gigging. I am now, I am enjoying it, but I don't rely on it for an income luckily, I do something else I love which pays me better than me gigging ever could. More importantly, if I ever had to gig for money, I can't imagine that I would enjoy it that much and would find it pretty frustrating. Sure its good for the emotional outlet, but its not very good as an intellectual outlet. I think I enjoy it because I don't have to rely on it.
Interesting, I love it because I do rely on it. This whole playing bass, rock and roll, band, gigging thing, my history and how I got into it and why I'm so driven by it is quite different vthan most. Blue
 14.
I have never seen that.
I have, everything from gigging is a waste of time, there's no money in it, to too many long hours. Well never change people that don't like gigging anymore than you can change those of us that love gigging. Blue
 15.
I am not sure - it depends if they knew how well they played normally. But anyway, its ok, because: A ) any experienced bass player would understand why someone was playing below their ability on some songs, and B ) I am not playing for experienced good bass players, I am playing for mostly drunk dancing women.
Agreed punters can't tell. However, there's still no good or rational reason to purposely play below your ability because you don't like a particular song. Blue
 16.
Geek, I do understand your position and certainly didn't set out to upset anyone, it really was just one of those situations where I was reading through BC threads on Sunday afternoon, and I just happened to notice that quite a few people mentioned that they don't gig, or only gig occasionally, so I thought I would just put it out there to see what those people do instead of gigging, because I could be in a situation myself very soon when I wont be able to gig anymore, it really was just an innocent question. I have to say that when I saw your comment, I was so upset about it that I can honestly say that I was thinking about terminating my membership to BC for fear of upsetting others.
I've seen it go both ways. Some here are pretty critical of those that gig. Blue
 17.
In an ideal world, this is true. However, if a song is complete sh*t and involves absolutely not effort on your part, how would you tell between playing 100% your best or 20%, if the result is the same?
I think any experienced good bass player could tell if another bass player was playing below his ability on a song. Blue
 18.
I have recently thought about meeting up with the guys from my old band but that's probably just the irrational thoughts of a mid-life crisis.
Not necessarily, if you guys get back together make sure you do some Bad Finger material. Blue
 19. That is messed up. Hope you get your gear back. Good lesson for all of us. Don't leave gear in your car for any reason. Blue
 20.
Wow, reading this thread I realise I've probably only played live maybe 10 times in the last couple of years. Hmm....used to be much more often, sobering thought.
Are your saying you weren't aware you've only gigged a couple a times a year? Blue
 21.
Had a great run of about 30 years in Pub Rock / blues / cover bands , lots of gigs and great memories . Last decent band folded about 4 years ago ,and it's been a real struggle to get in a band that doesn't implode or break up before we get out gigging , musicians these days seem less tolerant,or more selfish and will quit a band for the smallest of reasons . I love gigging , but band politics really sucks the pleasure out of being in a band. When this happens ,I just pick up the classical guitar and play purely for my own pleasure.( and the cat likes it too )
I'm of the school that thinks veterans of the gigging world through a little band research asking a lot questions can sniff out bands that are going nowhere fairly quickly and accurately. Blue
 22.
The band don't notice...???? pretty sure that would get you minus points on a lot of gigs, IME, if that is the case. It is one of those songs you would be expected to put away and also liven it up beyond being a filler. Even if the band hasn't played together before it is cardinal to sound like it... The thing that gets you a very big cheer right from the off is the band going thru the gears on the first number, whatever it is
No one should hold back and not committ 100% to playing their best on any song because you don't like the song. Blue
 23.
i couldn't join a band playing music i don't like just to play a gig. i have an addictive personality so when i'm in the right band i'm all in, but when i'm not i find other hobbies that i am equally as addicted to and put the bass down for a while. i'd rather have no gigs and do something else i enjoy than play music i dislike just to play a gig... i've done it before and didn't enjoy any minute of the 6 months i was doing it (even though i was getting paid) and i ended up quitting for 18 months.
If you did this for a living meaning ,you don't gig you don't eat. Your genres of choice are not available what would you do? Oh under this scenario you can't get a traditional proper job, you must remain a musician who's lively hood depends on gigging. Hint there's only to answers. I'll give you one of them. Starvation Blue
 24.
After hearing this a couple of days ago i had to give it a try!
That's what's happening guys. Blue
 25.
I think the key is not being too precious about the kind of music you play.
Every musician I know who is, is gigless. Blue
