1.
Who's bragging?
Sounded like bragging to me Rhys. Blue
 2.
It's interesting to see that people class being able to copy or learn to play a bass line, as being able to play. Whilst I totally understand that for many it's all about the playing with others, and doing gigs. To me it's kind of like buying a painting by numbers set, and saying you can paint.
I doubt you'll get much support from those of us that work hard on covers. In many cases if you don't have sone advanced training or knowledge of theory learning some covers would be very difficult. Anyway, IMO the comparison to paint buy numbers is nonsense. But I do understand for some it's all about sitting in the bedroom alone. Blue
 3.
Recording of a dep that the singer from my band and I did on Saturday. Easy to learn the set because they use backing tracks so they sent us the tracks and we were both able to run through a few bits on our own before the gig. Went well despite the drummers best attempts at making us laugh to put us off.
Awesome job crisp ,clean and accurate. Must be fun playing against your drummer. For all the cover haters, what this band is doing is far from easy. Blue
 4.
(Framus Starbass image copyright Andy Baxter)
Love that semi hollow. Blue
 5.
Anyone who needs a book or a teacher to learn to play Rock and Roll is a whimp. Back in the day you formed a band first, then learned to play an instrument. Listen to record, lift off tone arm, practice lick, replace tone arm, listen to lick again, repeat till you have got it. Nurse, my medication please.
Nonsense, you can learn a lot from records and even more from books and structured lessons. I'm a rock guy, however I was able to win an audition to play bass in my university jazz band for 4 years because in addition to moving that needle back and fourth I had also studied and took lessons which taught me to read charts. 6.
A combination of learning lines from records, good tuition, some very good bass books and lots of gig experience playing in covers bands for me. Records: Too many to mention, but would say having an open mind about most types of music has helped. Tuition: A 10 week part time Intermediate course at the Bass Institute (went on to become Basstech) with Tony Muschamp, and private tuition on and off with BGM columnist Paul Geary. Being a member on SBL has also been a great inspiration too. Have to give a special mention to my first ever bass teacher Garth Thomas, who worked at the long defunct "Andre's Music Shop" in South Croydon - only ever had three lessons with him, but they were very useful indeed. Bass books: Chuck Rainey "Complete Electric Bass Player Vol.1", Ed Friedland's "Electric Bass Complete Vols 1-3", "Blues Bass" and "The Working Bassist's Toolkit", Stuart Clayton's books are great too. Gigs: Never really felt I started to be a bass player until I did some covers gigs - a real learning experience about doing a good job and learning some real life lessons when things went (occasionally) wrong. Have been playing for over 30 years, and never lost my appetite for it. If it's something you love doing, you'll find your own particular route to where you want to be in music. It's all about enjoying the journey
Now this is a great story. Blue
 7.
I'm the same with guitar, I can play very few songs by other people, I just don't have the interest in doing it.
Why do people think this is something to brag about? Blue
 8. Brand X,at Shank Hall. It's not a "hall", it's a small bar. Saw John Mayall there last Saturday. Blue
 9.
That's why we only play ticketed events - the punters want us to be there.
Ticketed events in my area really only work for national signed acts. Local bands that attempt ticketed events means no crowd. Blue
 10.
I don't let people play my bass, nor would I ask for a go on theirs unless they trying to sell it to me.
That's my take, and again I would never ask a stranger if I could check out his bass. Blue
 11.

Awesome burst. Blue
 12.
OK, not exactly selfies as I haven't worked out how to play the bass and hold a camera at the same time, these two are from summer 2015 when Ms Haan was still with us. Taken at a bike rally north of Banbury.
Dave, are you like 6' 4"? Blue
 13. A German made Hofner. Gased in 64, finally purchased a German made Hofner Club bass 50 years later. Blue
 14. We played a 9:30 to 1:30 Saturday night. Not too bad. Good energy and sound for the 1st 2 sets, then things started to wind down. Got home at 3:00am and every bone in my 63 year old body ached. Collapsed in my bed. Fell asleep with all my clothes and shoes in. It's a tough racket. Blue
 15.
Milwaukee didn't get stereo until 1974. The residents objected.
I didn't move to Milwaukee until 1981. Blue
 16. John Mayall tonight at Shank Hall (small bar in Milwaukee) Blue
 17.
Believe me, I'm excercising a lot of restraint! If there were no Beatles, there would still have been a David Bowie and there would still have been a Frank Zappa. FZ may not have performed I Am The Walrus at Wembley Arena on April 18th 1988, but I regard that as a small price to pay. Here's a question for you Blue - The Beatles in Mono or Stereo?
Mono of course. Blue
 18.
No facts - remember? Just your not so humble opinion. Maybe - but I kinds get the feeling that if you were get hold of some of Paul McCartney's used toilet paper you'd be saying it was an artistic masterpiece.
Not me. Blue
 19. Picked up my 1951 MIJ Fender P from Ron yesterday. Remember, I dropped it face down on to asphalt during tear down. Nothing was damaged except for a big ding. Ron cleaned up all the asphalt, put a new set of strings on it and tweaked the intonation. Cost me $61.00. Blue
 20.
Are "Luther built" basses any better than those produced by larger manufacturers? I wouldn't necessarily expect a guy in a backstreet garage to build a better car than a well known manuacturer in a multimillion pound factory.
My thoughts exactly. Blue
 21.
I am not a massive beatles fan, or much of a music historian, but I cant help feeling that people saying that the Beatles were not that big a deal in the UK are wrong. Surely 20 number 1 hits when it was more difficult to get hits in the mid 60's than today, is testament to how big they were here. Rhianna could overtake them as she is on 14, but take any song the Beatles did with Umbrella from Rhianna, and the Beatles songs were masterpieces
I actually heard a song that Paul worked with Rhianna on. It was pretty cool. Blue
 22.
More of a leap than a progression, IMO.
Good point! Blue
 23.
Can you not see that the younger person will at least be able to enjoy a fraction of the Beatles that you did yet being dead will completely stop someone enjoying anything after their demise?
Yes, I can. But if a young person happens not to like The Beatles, your point is moot. Blue
