1.
None of those bands appear to be replacing a bass player apart from 3. They all seem to be 'start ups'. The female fronted band looking for guitar, bass and drums to complete their lineup? So, plenty of people who want to be in a band.
That's what I thought, all start ups.An established band with work and money is involved are never advertised. And #3, says they're looking for the best. Sorry but your not going to get the best when your a start up. Blue
 2.
How long does it take to get from Wolverhampton to Milwaukee on a Sunday afternoon? :-) Joking aside, I've answered a couple of similar ads locally & nothing has ever clicked with the advertisers. It's hard being the new guy, especially if they are all mates.
In some circles were all the "new guy". Over here the circle of musicians that are really doing something and making money are closed to outsiders.I'm assuming it's the same case in the UK. Blue
 3. I'll start. I'm very lucky to be a member of my band. The band has been together for 11 years and I have been with them for the last 5 years. If my band folded it would take a long time to find a new match. Blue

 5.
Blue ,the best way i think of using multi effects units live , such as my zoom b3 is a way of adding versatility to an existing board. For example I set up my most used 3 effects for constant use , ( tube screamer , octaver and and amp sim which is my clean boost .) It also doubles as my emergency Di, in case of amp failure, normally my Di goes out after amp shaping which means that if my amp goes pop the Di's gone too. multi effects are as much for convenience,as it also saves slots and power on my board compared to 3 boss sized or considerably more compared to big units, like a muff. I still use standard effects on my pedal board, ie my synth wah or compressor . The beauty of the zoom comes to light when doing new songs and you want to dial in a new sound quickly , or you need something for a cover you don't always use. The way I do this is using the zooms banks each slot of the b3 has little up down arrows for swapping that pedal and you can modify the order of the patches so if I suddenly need flange for 1 song mid set I can just swap off one effect that I don't need in that song to a slot above or below.
Thanks Blue
 6. I think it's always good to have influence's. I certainly did when I started playing in the 60s. Never heard of the 2 mentioned by the OP. Blue
 7. Depends on what you personally require from a band. Go with the band that meets most of your requirements. Blue
 8.
We've done two gigs an hour apart once. Never again! (Actually, that's not true, we've done it twice!)
I've done it. Last year on New Years Eve we did a 3-7 packed up and did a 9-1. I can't say never again. I need the cash. Blue
 9.
It is funny how a popular opinion or trend gets picked up on here and comes back completely different after a while. It happens quite a lot here and this is one of those subjects. Never used it, never needed to. In studio and out front are places that the engr will likely address, but I don't see any point for backline. Where do you put it in the signal chain?
There's no engineers or backline in US bars.😁 Blue
 10.
How on earth have you managed to become so active whilst suffering from Fibro' Mark? I am getting steadily worse and it takes me days to get over the pain and tiredness after a gig;in fact I have virtually stopped gigging. It doesn't help that I have degenerative disc disease with some stenosis, it stops me from exercising but I am interested in hearing how Yoga has helped you? I am a typical cynical 59 year old British male....unsure of all this foreign stuff Loving the diaries mate ...I manage to find the updates before you post on here by checking on a daily basis
I'm 63 and with chronic right hip pain with sciatica. Just finished a triple header weekend. A festival gig, a bar gig and a private event. And, as you know we don't have any of that 2 forty five minute set stuff over here. Strictly a 4 hour world over here, at the bar band level. I'm a foolish die hard and playing bass and singing in rock bands is all I know. My point, I don't know how much longer I can do this. Without gigging in a rock band, I have nothing.I started gigging in 1966. Blue
 11.
What would they do in Milwaukee?
We're not a wedding band, however when we play private events we request payment upfront. Blue
 12.
In a nutshell - should you ask for payment before or after the set? We've done a few weddings before but always for someone we've known. This Saturday we're playing a wedding without knowing the lucky people beforehand. So far the groom has been the contact and he's been flakey to say the least - we were actually recruited quite late in the day for reasons unknown - either the previous band pulled out or maybe he's just spectacularly disorganised! We've been given a small deposit but aren't sure how to proceed with the rest of the payment. The rest of the band are insistent on money upfront or we don't play but I'm worried that could come across as confrontational.
I agree with the band, get the money up front. This is why we have an administrator that handles the money and pays us. Musicians generally are not good at asking for money or paying musicians promptly. And in those rare occasions when a venue tries to get away with a fast one, meaning shorting the band, she's not going to let that happen. Plus, having an admin gives a band a more professional presence. Blue
 13. We did a cool 3 hour fair gig, 38 Special was the headliner. Real good pay and they set up a table with sandwiches, beer, water and soft drinks for us. Golf cart escort to the stage, real nice. I thought we were to loud and not very good. The crowd loved us. My point, just because the crowd loved you doesn't mean you were actually good. Blue
 14.
Oh gawd not this again. It has to be said that compression is certainly THE most misunderstood and maligned tools available to bass players. And I guarantee that it has contributed to precisely 100% of the fabled tones that many of us while away the hours in search of, fruitlessly fiddling with EQ knobs. Compressors have absolutely feck all to do with compensating for poor technique. That seems to be the biggest misnomer surrounding their use - and it's a fallacy that needs to be taken out back, humanely culled and never spoken of again. Because compression is every bass players best friend. Seriously guys, just do a teensy amount of homework on the topic - learn how to set a compressor properly - and a world of fabulous bass tones will be your oyster (whatever the heck that means. It's less fishy than it sounds).
Agreed, I think the problem is a lot of bass players think compression is an effect. It's not. Blue
 15.
I always thought compression was a cover up for poor technique. Honestly.
IMO, there is no such thing as a cover up for poor technique. Blue
 16.
What I make of it is that James Jamerson is dead & therefore not around to contradict anything she or anyone else says. And of course you can bet your life that with his history of drtug and alcohol abuse, you would ahve to take a fair bit of what he "remembered" with a pinch of salt. As far as I am aware Carole didnt start working for Motown until they opened a "branch" in California, which at least gives us a bit of a temporal context.... "Shrouded in mystery" is the phrase that comes to mind.
Wasn't the "hey day" of Motown over when they moved to the West Coast? Blue
 17. I'm still not sold on bass multi effects for live performance. I know they've improved, however I believe they take more work than pedals. For now I'm sticking with dedicated effects pedals. I wish the best to the OP. Blue
 18.
Agreed but sadly this is not THE brooklyn bowl. Its a bowling alley / music venue at the O2 arena in London. Should still be a great gig all the same :-)
I think the one in Brooklyn is also a bowling alley. Blue
 19.
From personal experience : In the right circumstances its the best. In the wrong circumstances its a big big problem. It may have been the stage you were playing on or just the right environment that allowed the bass to be heard and felt the way you like it. It might have been the case that the same sound, or just as good a sound, might have been got using a good 4 x 10, a pair of 2 x 10 or something of similar power handling to the 8x10. If its only every now and then you need it you could hire it?
Excellent point Blue
 20. There is no perfect cab. An Ampeg 8x10 cab is nice if they're anything like the one I bought new in 1972. Lugging that cab around is not fun. Blue
 21.

Dad33 you might consider finding a pic of a 63 year old playing in a rock band from a sitting position at a 4 hour bar gig with sciatica. IMO theses pics are irrelevant to my post. Nice try though. 😁 Blue
 22.
Vulfpeck at the brooklyn bowl (02) in sept. Absolutely can't wait.
Cool venue. The Brooklyn Bowl Blue
 23.
That's really quite sad
Milwaukee is a "blue collar" working class scene that caters to cover bands. The 6 originals clubs are on the east side of Milwaukee, the progressive liberal side if town. Blue
 24.
We do have venues that may have unknown originals multi band night on Thursday, covers band Friday and big name original act on a Saturday.
That's cool. We don't have any local big name originals bands in Milwaukee unless your talking about signed bands that are more or less famous. For example our Violent Fems. Blue
