1. I've got a VM4 with Sandberg's own pickups and would say that " ... a Pbass sound but modern, similar to a jbass but punchiest. Clear cutting with the band." pretty much sums up the the tone that I get with mine What amp and cab(s) are you using? What eq setting are you using? Any effects or anything else in your signal chain? In my experience the bass ought to be able to deliver the sound you describe without changing the pickups, but as Cuzzie says above;
This post is a massive can of worms as no matter what anyone else says its what you ears want ... But on this, I think you have to just research what is out there and go and listen and see what your ears tell you. Otherwise VS4 is a lovely bass
2. You can't go wrong with a decent laptop bag, especially if you can get your hands on one of the old fashioned brief case style ones. I've got one and it is way more sturdy and has more protection and padding than any of the overpriced official amp bags that I've seen. It's probably not as sturdy as a hard case but for loading in and out of the car it's more than man enough for the job. I cart my wireless system about in a Stanley plastic drill case that is lined with foam and the has lasted for over 10 years without cracking or breaking. I seem to recall the DG amp is quite diddy so you might be able to squeeze it into something similar?
3.
Krow is the 3 eyed Raven.......
Shouldn't that be 3 eyed Krow?
4. There is one venue we play that is always a really good gig with most people there to enjoy the music and to have a good time, but the venue has an occasional undercurrent or vibe that something is about to kick off. Once or twice in 5 or 6 years of regular gigging there, unfortunately it has done. But the door staff are fast and efficient in dealing with anything, often before it kicks off. But it still takes the edge off the evening. Because of this (and because it's a damn fine bass irrespective of price) I have a 'stunt bass', a 10 year old Peavey Zodiac. It cost me around £200 new and it's the one instrument that I'm not too precious over. Obviously I don't want it to get deliberately damaged, but if it does, at least it isn't one of my more expensive basses. It has paid for itself many times over in the time I've had it so should the day ever come I (hopefully) won't be too upset. It has a good weight too should I ever need to do a Keef with it
5. For me it has to be Bronski Beats Small Town Boy as covered by Paradise Lost. They have managed to turn the sng on its head and yet retain the feel of the original. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f9XiD_2K7-Q
6.
Thanks for the welcome. Have friend's in N'ampton but I'm further east between Corby and Peterborough
We're definitely not neighbours in that case
7. Alright chap? Another east Northants resident here. Who knows, we're probably neighbors!
8. Think this has already been mention by someone else but it gets another shout from me. Nothing flash, just a simple, repetitive melody that compliments the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuezNswtRfo
9.
Well I knew that you had a treasure trove of great bass lines gleaned over 30 years of bass playing that the world would be the richer place for you sharing...although I'm pretty sure I'd given up nagging you to do so ages ago!
How about this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnM9X0IgUmg
10.
Love it! So you wouldn't describe yourself as a fence sitter on this issue? I'm guessing you wouldn't be interested in getting a TE second hand then, perchance?
Come on Al, you know diplomacy is the least developed of my (admittedly limited) social skills
11. After weeks of constant bullying from a certain Mr Al Krow, I'd like to add throw one of my favourite bass lines into the mix. It's nothing complex, but the simple, repetitive, hypnotic groove courtesy of the legendary Jah Wobble is a work of minimalistic genius. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFxpL5TpZH0
12. Having covered a few CH tracks in previous bands, I love his style and groove and especially his use of 2nds, which orthodox theory teaches us to only use as passing notes!
13.
Yup, another +1 for the Magellan here. I'm as fickle as Picky McFickleface with amps, but I've had mine for a good while, and I have no GAS* on the amp front.... * Pfffft...I've said it now...
And another confirmed Magellan fan boy here too Having owned a Trace rig for several years and being pretty much underwhelmed by it in every way (see post #8) I have found that the Magellan to be a vast improvement in just about every way; lighter, louder, more versatile, quicker and easier to get the sound I want etc. With the obligatory caveat that this is all in my experience and opinion
14.
Permanently on. Fuller, fatter and more even tone without being noticeable to anyone that anything is affecting the sound.
Same here. Until you switch it off! Used sparingly it goes a long way and can turn a good bass tone into a great one. I won't leave home without one. My weapon of choice is the TC Electronics Spectracomp, arguably the most versatile unit currently on the market.
15.
Osiris - just ordered the Arachnid Audio pedal. Thanks again!
Let me know what you think when it arrives.
16.
I bought a B stock PJB C4 at a price which seemed to good to be true. I'd never heard of them but took the risk all the same! It arrived within a week in a sealed PJB box totally as new and unmarked. I've since bought a B stock PJB D600 for less than half price, again arrived quickly and as new.
Thanks, I can see a pattern emerging here. Think I might just be putting an order their way very shortly....
17.
Has anyone had any experience buying anything from Muziker (https://www.muziker.co.uk/) before? If you have, how was your experience, good, bad or indifferent?
That's good to know, thank you. Anyone else used them?
18. We use an online calendar that each band member can access to avoid this type of situation. But that only works if everyone actually fills it in.... In your situation, I'd not only take the wife to the gig that you have tickets for, but I'd also be on the look out for a new band to join.
19. I've no idea if the Magellan can power a foot-switch. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere so I'm assuming that it can't. Mine is powered from a fuel tank junior power supply that feeds my tuner and compressor pedals. As mine is the smaller case size there's no room for a battery, but it might be possible that the larger sized case can accommodate a battery. Drop them an email to ask the question if you're tempted by one. Hope this helps.
20. I use one of these from Arachnid audio for channel switching on my Magellan 800. According to the blurb on their website it is a latching switch. I'm really pleased with it, it's well built, feels solid, looks great and, of course, does the job. Plus it's a bit cheaper than some of the other options available too. I don't think it states it on the website but there are several different LED colours available too. Mine has an externally powered LED with the internal polarity switch so you can choose which channel lights the LED up. If you're interested, drop them a line. They were very helpful when I dealt with them a few months ago.
21. Hats off to you guys that like it, but that looks absolutely f***ing hideous to me Who'd have thought it was possible to make something even more disgusting than a standard sunburst/tortoiseshell combination??? And yet someone managed it But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.
22. Has anyone had any experience buying anything from Muziker (https://www.muziker.co.uk/) before? If you have, how was your experience, good, bad or indifferent?
23. As far as I'm aware, Zoom don't make a dedicated case for the B3n. I've got older B3 and use a smaller version of this. Couldn't find the smaller one online through! I don't remember the exact size, but it was about £20 and it fits the B3 and power supply easily enough.
24. I'm not a big fan of aggressively bright high frequencies on bass either but I found that once the added treble from the Muscle Comp tone print is dialled back out again, you're left with a great punchy tone that helps to keep everything even with the band. I also backed off the horn in my cab too to help tame it. This isn't a problem for me as the Spectracomp is on all night and I don't change the tone print, but obviously it could become a faff if you plan to switch the pedal on and off as you might need to change eq settings too.
25.
l've just the above pedal (yeah, yet another comp) as an always on effect. Im hoping to use it to even out my pick playing and add a bit of fullness to the upper stings. Just playing the standard covers so i dont need a specific tone out of it, i just need more presence. So im just asking for recommendations based on the existing tone print patches that would be most suitable as a starting block. Cheers for any pointers. i think this one will be a keeper.
Try giving the Muscle Comp tone print a go, that was created by a pick player (can't remember his name at the minute). Although I'm primarily a finger player these days it's my favourite tone print, I find it punchy and even across all strings. It does have a boost to the high end frequencies which will help accent the pick attack, if that's what you're looking for, but I prefer to eq it back out and it gives me a deep and even tone across the fretboard. Other than backing off the high end a touch my eq is usually flat as you need those upper mids to help make the higher strings sit in the mix.
