1. I know what you're saying, but i think the thing with TL is.... he's not a technical player, it's all about getting a great tone and great feel, and playing what is right for the song. I really respected him for admitting he didn't have a chance of keeping up with the boys in Dream Theatre. I'm probably saying this because i ain't got too many flash chops, but IMO being a good bass player is about doing what's right for the music you're being employed to play. I have to say I was a little surprised as well - i was there with my drummer, and we both remarked on how 'behind the beat' he was when playing to the backing tracks - not sure if that was intentional. Still loved the evening though!
2. Hey - I was there! As you can see below - Tony was thrilled to meet one of his heroes (I wish!) What a nice laid back guy he is - obviously totally into his music - thanks machinehead for putting the evening on. Oh - and could anyone else get their heads around the bizarre token system for buying drinks?!
3. +1000 for Andy Viccars. Top man - knows his stuff - he's done loads of work for me. He loves what he does and doesn't do what he does to make a mint - totally trustworthy.....not a bad bas player either!!
4. Used Dunlops for years and never had a problem. They can be hard to get on the strap - which also meand they're hard to get off - which is good. Seen one of our guitarist hunting for a xcrew out of his Schallers twice. Nuff said!
5. You can get any 'bolt on' warwick with a 32" neck from their custom shop. I've got a Fender Mustang - there's absolutely nothing wrong with the sound of that - even though it's a 30" scale - cuts through in a band mix perfectly. I'm only selling it because I find the upper fret access difficult - intersted?
6. Have a free bump - these are fantastic amps! Col
7. Prices added, details changed on P Lyte to reflect rewiring and.....bumperty bump!!
8. Questions answered via PM. Why don't people often put the price on? Is it bad etiquette?
9. I want to own less basses so i can play the ones I've got more often - if that makes sense! I'll add some pitures over the week but i'll put a few on to be getting on with. Prices quoted reflect collection from Milton Keynes. Here goes: Fender (mex) Classic Precision Bass - Blonde. It's a '59 reissue and has been retro fitted with a tortoiseshell scratchplate. The original gold one is available but it's marked. There's a finger rest and a bridge cover fitted. When I put the bridge cover on, I didn't drill pilot holes, so the paint has cracked a bit, though you can't see this with the cover on. Also had to move the headstock string retainer over a couple of mm as it was misaligned. The old hole doesn't show though. Sounds great live - soundclips available. £300 Fender (Jap) Precision Lyte - 86.~~~SOLD~~~ Lighter than a light thing in a helium factory. Tobacco sunburst with tarnished gold hardware. Well worn chipped and scarred with bags of mojo! Excellent player - very fast thin neck. Now rewired, fitted with the original pickups and a passive VVT control set. £200 WITHDRAWN - Fender (Jap) Mustang reissue - Fiesta red. About 6 months old complete with very nice gig bag. Unmarked. Nothing at all wrong with this bass, It just doesn't suit me too well. £350 Hohner B Bass 6 ~~~SOLD~~~ Very nice 6 string bass - natural finish. It has active pickups, but I've taken the active preamp out as it sounded horrible, so the tone control is passive. A tasteful (!?) decal covers the hole for the other knob. it has three screw holes on the body where a Roland V Bass system was fitted. The dark marks on the photos are shadows from leaves!! This has a lovely tone and plays very nicely. It has a replacement bridge fitted, as the original had started to tarnish. The sticker on the headstock has been removed. £200 So come on - roll up roll up - come and buy my luvverly precision! May be open to trades but would prefer to sell.
10. I tried a VM Squier fretless recently and loved it. I'm comparing it to a japanese fender jazz fretless, and a custom built fretless 5. There's nothing wrong with th VM squires - I bought a VM 70's jazz recently and find I'm gigging with it more and more, despite having around 10 other fretted basses to choose from!
11. I can get there - that's gotta be good!
12. Dude! I've got a freeport and gig with it a coupla times a week. Some say it loses bottom, but in the bread and butter world of sweaty clubs, no one's gonna notice if you compensate by using your amp's eq a little. I use NMH rechargeables with mine - recharge before every gig. With all the controversy over frequencies being taken away, I certainly wouldn't invest too much dough in a radio at the mo!! freeport all the way!
13. Light enough to make a big difference, but still substantial enough to feel 'proper'. I was amazed at the tone when I first played it - I had it in my head that it would lack botton, but it doesn't at all. Has some nice low mid stuff that cuts through a mix real well. You'd be best to try the sound first though to make sure you like it. Col
14. Just put an East pre in mine - gigged it tonight and it sounded real good. Man - that neck is sooooo fast - not sure if it's the satin finish, but it feels slimmer than my other jazzes. Had to rout the body slightly to get the pre in, but well worth it. Next.....maybe a badass - don't think it really needs it but hey.......!
15. Sound Control in Milton Keynes did mine for £215 inc a set of Dunlop Straplocks. Ask them what their best price is, then get them to throw in a freebie - strings/straplock/lead etc. Always buy the best you can find or you'll regret it later!!
16. Here's mine: I love it, but access to the upper frets is V poor - if ur gonna play 'All Right Now' - forget it!! The pearloid plate looks real nice - not el cheapo at all! Col
