1. MY AVRI 64 reissue Jazz is a fabulous beast. However, the neck side position markers aren't white - they're almost the same colour as the wood. On a dark stage I have trouble navigating my way around. I've tried luminous stickers (by the people who do the ceiling pixie dust stuff - Starglow) but found they didn't stay attached. Has anyone got any tips for something that'll stick on or other ways of making them more visible without spending too much or drastically altering the aesthetic of the instrument? Thanks in advance.
2. This is great to see. Experiencing the same symptoms. Gonna try a more powerful PSU. Fingers crossed!
3.
ah, but you do
Yeah i obviously do but it's still no one else's business. I usually stay away from threads like this cos it's they screw with my mental well-being but sadly took the bait today. But hey! I'm on my hols in Portugal in full sun, about 23 degrees and about to head off to the sea so shan't be thinking about headstock decals much more today ;-)
4. Each to their own. I have real Fenders, a 'Trigger's Broom' jazz bass with a Fender decal, and Bitsa P with a custom 'Isabelle' Vision Bass' decal. Don't really give a toss about what anyone else thinks and it's no one else's business to cast opinions on other's taste (or lack thereof). Looks like i got out the wrong side of bed!!
5. I've got one of these as a backup. if find the pre section to be very versatile. GLWTS
6. Coincidentally, I went for a curry in Stony Stratford today. We sat on the next table to Terry Marshall - Jim Marshall's Son. Terry is well known around here from local jam nights - he's an awesome Sax player. My son used to build amps and had made a JTM 45 copy - they were chatting about it and Terry was telling my son how the 'T' in JTM stands for 'Terry' because 'JTM' stands for 'Jim and Terry Marshall'. A lovely guy who had loads of time for us!
7. Bit like mine but I think mine has a Zebrano top!
8. So I've taken Gary Mac's advice and examined with a magnifying glass - well a lupe actually. I couldn't believe how much crud there was around the pots, including a couple of single strands of stray copper wire. I would imagine that's where my problem has come from!
9. Both good points thanks guys. I've got a replacement loom on its way from Kiogon . . . I'm not convinced vintage pots make a difference but if I check them closely and find a fault I'll know the pups are good. Otherwise a rewind is a great idea!
10. I've got an intermittent problem in my 70's (ish) Jazz bass. The pups are 78 and the pots etc are all 74. Now these pups just sound completely bonkers - hard to describe but really middly, powerful and honky. If I ultimately find it's the pups at fault, can anyone recommend something to replace them to give the same sound?
11. A bit of an odd one this. Many years ago I bought a Jazz Bass from a local music shop. It was a bit of a shed of a bass. The body had been badly routed for EMG soapbars and the neck had been badly refretted - but at the price I thought it was worth a punt. After a bit of research, I dated it (as best I could) to around 1974, mainly by what was left of the bass, and the stamp on the neck heel - which was a lot more legible then than it is now. The binding on the neck was cracked and the inlays were all badly cracked as well. I took it to local Luthier Andy Viccars who renovated it for me and turned it into a nice looking and playing fretless neck. The binding was replaced, the markers were replaced with Abalone pieces and it was resined over. Some time later, I wanted to go fretted, and Andy obliged, fitting it with jumbo frets. The work entailed skimming the fretboard, so it's thinner than normal - I wonder if this makes it more like a Geddy neck? Bad side of this is that on the first fret, it looks like you can see the truss rod just peeping through - not sure if it's the truss rod as it doesn't move when the truss rod turns so it's prob some of the gubbins associated with it. The truss rod works but is quite stiff getting the neck straight with heavier strings so i tended to stick to something like 40 - 100s. I can't get a really low action on it but if you can cope with around 3mm at the 12th fret on the E string then you should be able to manage that. It may be that with some fret fettling you could get the action lower. I've tried to be as honest as possible with the description, although it's not close to original it's a stunning looking neck and may suit someone who can cope with a higher action. As an aside, I first changed the body to a (period correct) Geddy body that I had sprayed in Nitro Olympic White, and have recently changed the neck to an Allparts Maple Job with Black blocks - so the bass is really a 'Trigger's Broom' of a bass - great player though! Anyway - on to the pics: Apologies for the blue tartan slippers. Difficult to price, but gonna put it up for £300 collected from sunny Milton Keynes. No problem posting at buyer's risk/cost. No trades please.
12. Gawd - what a bargain. Wish i lived local!
13. Play your favourite and take a spare on stage. Your band won't thank you if you're forever changing bass while they're trying to keep the vibe going!
14. Like a couple of others have said, wind the string further down the tuner. Easily fixed design flaw and V common.
15. I'm really lusting after a Fortress at the moment but could only take one in a trade. I think I'd find both pups in one position a bit limiting but looks like a lovely bass. Glwts!
16. British Music Experience at the O2? http://www.britishmusicexperience.com
17. Actually - I notice there's a screw missing from one of the tuners. Just checking there's no screws broken off in the headstock are there? Also - does it come with the fourth tuner? Colin
18. From memory, when you press and hold the left foot switch, it will change between a patch and individual fx within that patch. If it's showing a patch, you can then use the middle and right switches to change up and down your patches. Once you've got to the patch you want, hold the left foot switch down and that will give you the option to turn the three individual fx on and off within the patch. Hope that helps. Don't dump your B1on yet, they're great!
19. I've got a BB400s from 82 and it's one of a couple in my collection that I gig most. Bit plain, bit of a workhorse but just plays n sounds lush! Paid £80 for her but there's a bit of a back story!
