Closest aftermarket Jazz pups to a late 70's set?
King Tut replied to King Tut's topic in Repairs and Technical
So I've taken Gary Mac's advice and examined with a magnifying glass - well a lupe actually. I couldn't believe how much crud there was around the pots, including a couple of single strands of stray copper wire. I would imagine that's where my problem has come from! -
Closest aftermarket Jazz pups to a late 70's set?
King Tut replied to King Tut's topic in Repairs and Technical
Both good points thanks guys. I've got a replacement loom on its way from Kiogon . . . I'm not convinced vintage pots make a difference but if I check them closely and find a fault I'll know the pups are good. Otherwise a rewind is a great idea! -
I've got an intermittent problem in my 70's (ish) Jazz bass. The pups are 78 and the pots etc are all 74. Now these pups just sound completely bonkers - hard to describe but really middly, powerful and honky. If I ultimately find it's the pups at fault, can anyone recommend something to replace them to give the same sound?

A bit of an odd one this. Many years ago I bought a Jazz Bass from a local music shop. It was a bit of a shed of a bass. The body had been badly routed for EMG soapbars and the neck had been badly refretted - but at the price I thought it was worth a punt. After a bit of research, I dated it (as best I could) to around 1974, mainly by what was left of the bass, and the stamp on the neck heel - which was a lot more legible then than it is now. The binding on the neck was cracked and the inlays were all badly cracked as well. I took it to local Luthier Andy Viccars who renovated it for me and turned it into a nice looking and playing fretless neck. The binding was replaced, the markers were replaced with Abalone pieces and it was resined over. Some time later, I wanted to go fretted, and Andy obliged, fitting it with jumbo frets. The work entailed skimming the fretboard, so it's thinner than normal - I wonder if this makes it more like a Geddy neck? Bad side of this is that on the first fret, it looks like you can see the truss rod just peeping through - not sure if it's the truss rod as it doesn't move when the truss rod turns so it's prob some of the gubbins associated with it. The truss rod works but is quite stiff getting the neck straight with heavier strings so i tended to stick to something like 40 - 100s. I can't get a really low action on it but if you can cope with around 3mm at the 12th fret on the E string then you should be able to manage that. It may be that with some fret fettling you could get the action lower. I've tried to be as honest as possible with the description, although it's not close to original it's a stunning looking neck and may suit someone who can cope with a higher action. As an aside, I first changed the body to a (period correct) Geddy body that I had sprayed in Nitro Olympic White, and have recently changed the neck to an Allparts Maple Job with Black blocks - so the bass is really a 'Trigger's Broom' of a bass - great player though! Anyway - on to the pics: Apologies for the blue tartan slippers. Difficult to price, but gonna put it up for £300 collected from sunny Milton Keynes. No problem posting at buyer's risk/cost. No trades please.

Play your favourite and take a spare on stage. Your band won't thank you if you're forever changing bass while they're trying to keep the vibe going!

Like a couple of others have said, wind the string further down the tuner. Easily fixed design flaw and V common. -

From memory, when you press and hold the left foot switch, it will change between a patch and individual fx within that patch. If it's showing a patch, you can then use the middle and right switches to change up and down your patches. Once you've got to the patch you want, hold the left foot switch down and that will give you the option to turn the three individual fx on and off within the patch. Hope that helps. Don't dump your B1on yet, they're great!

I've got a BB400s from 82 and it's one of a couple in my collection that I gig most. Bit plain, bit of a workhorse but just plays n sounds lush! Paid £80 for her but there's a bit of a back story!
No tap tempo button either. Coupled with the lack of Di out makes me think I won't be upgrading
Scrub that re the tap tempo . . . Just read th specs. Looks deeper front to back than the b3. Just started using mine with other pedals in a boss case so still think I'll stick!

After 12 years of regular gigging with my band, The Curvy Love Dogz! we played our last pub gig last night and went out with a blast. We were a trio and I was fronting on vocals and bass. Had the same line up for twelve years except for about a year when the drummer went pro and took a year out. This was very much my baby. I organised, did the PA and lights, bookings, website. lemonrock, Facebook, the whole shebang. We're still going to take function bookings if i can achieve a decent fee but I've just had enough of all the work that goes into running a band. I don't envisage doing any more than a handful of gigs a year from now on. Although we've had some fabulous gigs, I've really got to the point where I've felt I'm going through the motions. I'm pretty lively on stage for an oldish geezer and when we do a two gig weekend, it takes so much out of me, I pretty much write the weekend off, despite keeping myself relatively fit. I also take it all so personally, when one of the other guys can't do a gig (constant source of stress as the drummer plays in another band) or we have a bad gig or get criticised etc etc that I get really stressed out about it. Being in alcohol recovery, I really need to keep life as stress free as possible. I've also managed to rebuild my marriage, and to some extent my family after a sh*tty break up, and I think that splitting the band can only be good for that. Lots of our fans have begged me to keep the band going, and the other two guys aren't exactly chuffed about me splitting the band up. Having said that, outside of the gig, despite constant comments from me they wouldn't help in any way shape or form with the running of the band. I've had to do what's right for me, and although I care for the other guys, I don't think I'm responsible for their musical careers. I think this year, we've been the best we've ever been, and do you know what? I'd rather go out on a high, than start to bicker and seethe with resentments all the time and end up falling out. I've joined another band - Isabelle - where I'm just playing bass and singing BV's. They probably gig about half as much as The Curvyz, so I can continue playing, and contribute to the organisation, without having to take everything on. So - the end of an era for me. Just felt I needed to get that off my chest! Happy New year to you all!.
