The new tortoise/pearl pickguard cost me £79.00 to have custom made, and I think it looks great. It comes with the brilliant PRS padded gig bag.     I got myself a lovely new PRS SE Kestrel bass in 3TS. This is a great bass, by the way. Everything you love about a Fender Jazz, but with PRS style, balance and coomfort. Fit and finish amazing. I'm having a brown pearl tortoiseshell scratchplate made, and fancy some amber 'speed' knobs for it. I don't know what shaft size/fitting to go for. Does anyone know the correct ones to fit the PRS SE Korean made pot shafts? Many thanks for any help. Karl

    Lovely to see this bass again. I built it. I sold it to Wunjo's who said it went right away to a new home. The neck does have a trussrod, and the body is one piece French Alder. Very light and resonant. The scratchplate is made from a special imported material. I haven't seen any more of it. The control cavity cover is hand made from 2mm brass sheet and then patinated to give the dark brown colour. The body finish is very thin, very hard melamine lacquer. Somebody should jump on this. It cost more than the asking price to build. Karl

    Watch out when using Tru-Oil. If you apply with rags or paper towels, make sure you spread them out flat to dry after you apply the finish. It's a pre-catalyzed formula which will cure once exposed to oxygen. If rags or paper towels soaked in it stay crumpled up after use, the heat generated when it cures can cause them to catch fire.     I've had great success getting replacement/new guards from Jack at Jack's instrument services in Manchester. http://jacksinstrumentservices.com He'll work from a card template, rather than the original guard if you don't want to send it. He also has a nice selection of really nice sheet materials to choose from and is great to deal with. He has a 3 ply cream pearl here: http://jacksinstrumentservices.com/custom-scratchplate-cutting.html#colours He will also cut you a guard from material you supply if you want something unique, or even a vinyI record album! I use him a lot. If you're sending a template, make sure it's on something firm. I actually use 1mm sheet styrene for mine, as I can tweak and sand the edges to get it perfect. Mark the centres on all your screws and remove the cutouts for pickups etc. Write on it which edges you want bevelled,etc. The guard you get back will be as accurate as the template you supply.     Lighter fluid (Naptha) is best. It's volatile, so won't stay on the surface more than a few seconds and leaves no residue. Squirt some in an egg cup, wrap a clean rag round your finger and just dip the tip into the fluid, then rub the wetted rag on the fretboard. You can 'pull' the dirt to the middle of each section and 'lift' it off the surface. I use this method when cleaning rare and vintage bodies and necks. Karl
